Achilles Tears in NCAA Gymnastics - A Must Have Conversation

Today on the podcast, is a lecture that I gave to all of the College Gymnastics Coaches last year when our research paper on Achilles studies, Achilles tears, and NCAA gymnastics was being published.    I wasn't able to share this as a podcast because we had not yet published our paper, but now that it's out, and many people have read it and have talked about it, I can share this lecture.    Obviously, there is a huge issue with Achilles tears in NCAA gymnastics and this is a problem that has been going on for the last four to five seasons.    Before COVID in 2018, there were about 20 Achilles tears in the first couple of months of the season, which was absolutely devastating to watch.    This lecture gives an outline of my ideas, shares conversations with world experts on Achilles' tendons, and summarizes and presents the research in a way for people to think about them.   As well as provide some options for what we can do, both before and during College Gymnastics to possibly start reducing the risk of tears happening.     I DISCUSS; The elephant in the room.   What are the possible risk factors?   Why you can't rupture a tendon if you don't have pathology.   NCAA Achilles Paper finding.   What can be done Pre and during NCAA to help reduce Achilles injuries.   And…   Confusing questions answered.   RELATED EPISODES: PROFESSOR JILL COOK ON ACHILLES TENDON INJURIES, ACHILLES TEAR RISK FACTORS, RISK REDUCTION  How To Train Harder and Smarter Using Workloads with Tim Gabbett and Scott WillgressWe appreciate you listening! Is There an Overtraining Problem in Gymnastics Culture?

Today on the podcast, is an interview I was asked to do with Temple Landry, who was an Elite Gymnast from Twin City Twisters in Minnesota and is heading to Stanford in a few years to compete. She approached me with a project she is doing for her English class and was interested in finding out more about the differences in the approaches to overtraining in gymnastics. It ended up being a really awesome discussion, she had some fantastic questions which is why I wanted to put it up as a podcast and share it for everyone.    TEMPLE ASKED; How much do you think overtraining and injury correlate?   How much training versus strength and conditioning should gymnasts do?   What would your ideal Offseason training look like?   What do you think is a normal amount of time to train for gymnasts?   And…   The 10,000 Hour Rule?We appreciate you listening! Gymnastics Ankle Injuries - A Complete Guide

Ankle and foot injuries are one of the most common problems gymnasts face. Depending on the study you read, up to 50% of all lower-body injuries in gymnastics occur at the ankle and foot. When you look at the sport, it makes sense. It is full of high impact forces, high repetitions, young athletes going through puberty, and has many cultural issues that might make it challenging to keep the ankle and foot joints healthy. In an effort to help provide high-quality information to the gymnastics community, I wanted to create this podcast and "mega-blog" for people to use as a reference. I provide all of my thoughts on common ankle and foot injuries and how to manage the stages of different injuries. I also share how to safely progress back to gymnastics after an injury, and how to reduce the risk of ankle and foot injuries in our sport. I have spent hundreds of hours reviewing the literature on this topic in an effort to make this blog very high quality. 0:00 Introduction 8:30 Ankle and Foot Injury Rates in Gymnastics 13:37 What Causes Ankle Injuries in Gymnastics? 30:00 Basic Ankle and Foot Anatomy 43:30 Common Injuries Introduction 45:00 Ankle Sprains 49:58 "Crunched" Ankles / Talocrural Impingement 54:00 Growth Plate Injuries (Sever's Disease, etc) 56:00 Tendonitis and Tendinopathies 1:02:02 Shin Splints 1:04:05 Ankle Stress Fractures / Fractures 1:08:00 Rehabilitation of Ankle/Foot Injuries 1:14:20 Acute Phase - Swelling, Pain, & Walking 1:28:05 Intermediate Phase - Strength & Balance 1:32:05 Advanced Phase - Power & Plyometrics 1:35:25 Return to Gymnastics Phase 1:41:30 How To Reduce Ankle/Foot Injuries in Gymnastics 1:46:20 What If Gymnasts Aren't Getting Better? We appreciate you listening! How To Build Gymnastics Performance Teams

This week's podcast is actually a lecture that went out in my online membership group The Hero Lab. Lots of members wanted to learn more about how to start working with other professionals. Such as medical providers wanting to start working with a gym or strength coaches wanting to get in with some gymnastics clubs in the area. Coaches want to know the factors or qualities they should look for in a medical provider, strength coach, sports psychologist, or nutritionist's because the reality is that it's challenging to find great professional experts in different domains that are highly qualified and interested in and understand gymnastics. I share my experience of what I did to establish successful working relationships but also what highly successful Colleges, National Staff, and Clubs do so that hopefully other people can replicate that model and gain the same performance benefits. We appreciate you listening! Essential Trampoline Drills and Progressions with Elite Coach Steve Gluckstein

Today on the podcast I’m joined again by former trampolinist and US Junior National Team Coordinator Steve Gluckstein. In his previous episode discussed the benefits of weightlifting and strength training for gymnasts and his experiences as an Olympic level trampoline coach. I wanted him back on to talk more specifically about the Trampoline and TNT disciplines, as lots of people requested advice and ideas around skills and progressions in this domain.   WE DISCUSS; The base level skills and drills your athletes need to master before you even think about harder skills.   The strength and conditioning work you should be spending more time on.   Why the flexibility demands are more intense in trampolining.   The systematic progressions for a back tuck.   How to spot on the trampoline.   And…   The great hotdog debate. We appreciate you listening!
