Becky Downie on Overcoming Adversity and Lessons From 15 Years in Elite Gymnastics
Today on the podcast I am excited to bring back an episode we actually did three years ago. I wanted to share this episode again now with Becky Downie, due to the recent podcast with her younger sister Ellie. Becky now 30 is a double Olympian for Great Britain becoming Commonwealth Champion on bars not once but twice, European Champion on bars, and World silver medalist on bars. I was really fortunate to sit down and interview Becky back in 2019 and talk about overcoming adversity in her career, injuries, the ups and downs, and how she continues to work hard and be positive given her long career. We also talk about her sister and given how popular the episode with Ellie was, I wanted to reshare this episode with Becky as a lot of people who are new to the podcast might not realize that we have this fantastic episode with Becky. I also wanted to bring it back and tie these two episodes together because they both have so much incredibly valuable information that coaches, gymnasts, medical providers, and particularly parents should study and learn from. To really understand how to get the best out of athletes and help them with their performance, increase the longevity of their career whilst staying as healthy and happy as possible. We discuss: What would Becky do differently now looking back on her gymnastics journey? How to deal with stress as a gymnast. The secret to Becky’s long and successful career. Overcoming injuries and sets backs, advice from an Olympian. And… How Becky balances adult life, the Doubledownies Company, alongside being a full-time elite athlete. We appreciate you listening! Should Gymnasts Wear A Brace for Back Pain?
Today on the podcast, I'm very excited to bring to you a presentation from one of my recent students, Alea Penner, a former gymnast who has just graduated from Duke Physical Therapy School. She did a phenomenal, inservice lecture on bracing gymnasts with back-related injuries. “Discussing bracing treatment for spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis in athletes. Summarizing the current available research that supports or contradicts current treatment standards and discuss topics of future research that are demanded by lack of current literature.” The use of braces is controversial, so it's really important for us to understand the current research on bracing. Alea wonderfully took on the big task of reviewing the literature and doing an inservice on bracing versus not bracing. She discusses: Does bracing limit gross motion and/or spinal segmental motion during ADL’s (activities of daily living) or sport-specific activity? Does bracing lead to decreased strength and/or changes in posture/gait with prolonged use? Does limited motion prevent the progression of a fracture or slippage? Does bracing improved bone union? And is bony union predictive of a better return to sports outcomes and subjective pain?We appreciate you listening! Addressing Body Image, Nutrition, and Strength Issues in Gymnastics Culture
Today in the podcast, I'm very excited to bring to you an interview I was asked to do with Nicole Farrier on her podcast. Nicole is a fitness professional with a bachelor's in exercise science and nutrition, a certified personal trainer, competitor, and online coach. We had an important and informative conversation about some of the cultural issues in gymnastics related to body image, nutrition, and changing the approach to strength and conditioning. Nicole and I talked a lot about these issues and some of the stigmas around aesthetics versus performance. We explored the need for culture change in the sport so we can best support and help athletes to be healthy, happy, and high performing for the next 10, 15, 20 years. We discuss: Injury prevention issues in gymnastics. How to communicate with younger athletes especially when their skill level is at the level of an adult. Food is fuel. There's a time and a place for conditioning. Why we need to teach kids how to use technology as a tool and not as a vice. OCD elbow research paper; from the moment you start to have pain, to the moment you are fully back to gymnastics, what does that entire process look like? And... Should parents be allowed to watch training sessions? We appreciate you listening! Chellsie Memmel on Gymnasts Lifting Weights and Her Gymnastics Conditioning Routine
Today on the podcast I am super flattered to welcome back Chellsie Memmel for another epic episode. The 2005 World All-Around Champion, the third American woman to achieve this feat, and Beijing Olympic Team member. Chellsie now 33 years of age and mom of 2, made a phenomenal gymnastic comeback in 2020 documenting her inspiring journey on her YouTube channel, and competed again after 9 years at the U.S. Classic and National Championships in 2021. I wanted to have Chellsie back on the show to have a conversation about the differences and benefits of adding weight training to gymnastics, and how her ideas on conditioning have changed and developed from when she was younger training for the Olympics versus now as an adult gymnast. We discuss: What does a week of training and conditioning look like for Chellsie Memmel? How Chellsie implemented external weight training into her conditioning. What advice Chellsie would tell her younger self. Chellsie’s top tips on taking care of your body and recovery to keep training. Ellie Downie Discusses Her Elite Gymnastics Career, Longevity, and Mental Health
Today in the podcast, I am excited to have senior British artistic gymnast Ellie Downie. Ellie from Notts Gymnastics Club has won multiple international medals and titles and is the All-around 2017 European gymnastics champion, the first British gymnast to win a major all-around title. I love talking to athletes about their experiences in gymnastics, trying to learn from them, and pulling out some value for parents, coaches, or gymnasts that are still active in the sport. There's so much that we can learn from people like Ellie, who have had a long, successful career, and also I think it's important to not only highlight what got them to where they are but also, what would they do differently? What would they like to see, change in the sport right now? Ellie gives a lot of practical advice about what she has done, I really enjoyed this conversation and can't thank her enough. We discuss: Ellie Downie’s key to recovery. Advice to coaches who are trying to achieve longevity in their athletes. Ellie’s thought on giving gymnasts take a break from competitions or training during puberty. Injuries, anxiety, and stress; what Ellie has learned to cope with these. Why Ellie doesn’t use Twitter anymore. The important role of Ellie’s mom in her life and gymnastics career. And… How Ellie’s training has involved over the years and the use of weight training.
