Abstain from every form of evil.” They… Rejoiced in all things Prayed in all things Gave thanks in all things The Thessalonian church knew Jesus and the will of God. Are you ready for Christ’s return? The Thessalonians were known for their “irresistible readiness” as they anticipated the Day of the Lord. The “Day of the Lord” is a term that refers to all of the events related to Christ’s second coming. The “Day of the Lord” begins when Jesus returns for His bride – the Church! (1 Thessalonians 4:16-18). As the bride of Christ, we should be ready for the return of Christ! HOW TO BE RADIANT AND READY FOR CHRIST’S RETURN Live in the light of God’s Word instead of the darkness of our world. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.Today when a Christian dies, their body goes into the grave, but their soul goes immediately to heaven in God’s presence. (See 2 Corinthians 5:4-8)2 Corinthians 5:4-8, For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.When Jesus returns, the bodies of those who have died in Christ will rise from the grave to be reunited with their souls. (See 1 Corinthians 15:35-58, 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. What is the rapture?The rapture is where Christ returns FOR His bride. The Second Coming is when Christ returns WITH His bride. (See 2 Corinthians 11:1-2)2 Corinthians 11:1-2, Oh, that you would bear with me in a little folly—and indeed you do bear with me. For I am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ. We should be preparing to see Jesus by pursuing a life that is holy and living for the things of eternity.1 Thessalonians 4:17-18, Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. Therefore comfort one another with these words.Why is this comforting?Very soon, there will be no more sin. Sickness. Sadness. Death. Destruction. Darkness. The Thessalonians were known for their “irresistible holiness.” First Thessalonians 4:7 says, “For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.” To be holy means to be set apart, separated for a purpose. God calls us to be separated from sexual immorality to pursue lives that are holy. HOLINESS “…but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, ‘Be holy, for I am holy.’”—1 Peter 1:15-16 HOW DOES GOD’S WORD DEFINE SEXUAL IMMORALITY? Sexual immorality is defined as any sexual activity outside of marriage between a man and a woman. “Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.”—Hebrews 13:4 “And He answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning “made them male and female.”’”—Matthew 19:4 God does not consider something morally acceptable just because it feels natural to you. The Thessalonians were a church of “irresistible influence” because they were a church of “irresistible leadership.” A Kingdom leader’s mission is to make disciples who make disciples, which means everyone is called to be someone’s leader. THE MARKS OF AN EFFECTIVE KINGDOM LEADER… 1 Thessalonians 3:1-2 says… “Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone, and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith…” KINGDOM LEADERS EMPOWER OTHERS! The Apostle Paul EMPOWERED TIMOTHY, a younger man who would lead the second generation in the early Church. Paul knew that a MULTIPLYING MOVEMENT demands multiplying leaders. There is no movement apart from multiplication. Paul DEVELOPED and DEPLOYED deployed Timothy to minister through him, not merely to him. Paul had discipled Timothy, who was now being sent to disciple the Thessalonians. KINGDOM LEADERS LOVE OTHERS! You cannot lead people you don’t love. You can be their boss, manager, dictator, or teacher. But you cannot be their leader. Paul was more concerned with how the Thessalonians were doing than what they were doing. He was willing to SUFFER with them and SACRIFICE for them. If you’re not “bleeding,” you’re not really leading because you’re not really loving. Loving others requires sacrifice. KINGDOM LEADERS SUBMIT TO OTHERS! Kingdom leaders SUBMIT to others. You will never be a great or godly leader apart from HUMILITY and SUBMISSION to AUTHORITY. You will never be an effective leader if you are not an effective FOLLOWER. KINGDOM LEADERS ARE THANKFUL FOR OTHERS! Kingdom leaders don’t see people as “human resources” but as human beings. The Thessalonians were a church of irresistible influence because they were a church of irresistible life change. Their changed lives were unexplainable yet undeniable! Discover how God’s Word changed them and can change you! HOW GOD’S WORD WORKS IN YOU TO CHANGE YOU… IT MUST BE RECEIVED. A changed life begins with a new birth by the “seed” of God’s Word. Spiritually you are born by the “seed” of God’s Word, and you grow by the “milk” milk of God’s Word. IT MUST BE BELIEVED. You don’t change by getting into God’s Word. You change when God’s Word gets into you. When you believe and take God at His Word, the “seed” of His Word is planted within you. IT MUST BE OBEYED. Obedience is often costly. It’s never easy. The church at Thessalonica was a church of irresistible influence. They were living proof of a loving God to a watching world. 3 things made the Thessalonians a church of irresistible influence… Their work of FAITH. The power of motherhood is to shape their children and future generations. While our modern culture sometimes teaches that women having children is a problem, God considers having children a privilege and the role of the mother of utmost importance. The goal of motherhood is to train up our children to be more than “good” but truly godly! This demands we start early and do the hard work daily. The priority and power of motherhood is to teach their children their identity. Children naturally ask, “Who am I?” Who they are is defined by whose they are. God created and made them, which is why God gets to define them. “Self-idolatry” always results in a distorted identity. Teach your children who they are by teaching them who God is.
