"Critical Race Theory, Part 3" w/ James Lindsay, Founder of New Discourses
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn the final episode of our series exploring what Critical Race Theory (CRT) is, we speak with author, mathematician, and political commentator, Dr. James Lindsay. James has written six books spanning a range of subjects including religion, the philosophy of science and postmodern theory. He is the founder of New Discourses and currently promoting his new book "Cynical Theories: How Activist Scholarship Made Everything about Race, Gender, and Identityโand Why This Harms Everybody." Dr. Lindsay offers a viewpoint and opinion on Critical Race Theory that differs from the previous two guests in this series. While many believe that CRT is a legal framework by which to view the racial disparity among minorities, Dr. Lindsay argues that this is a dangerous, and racist, theory that undermines the progress and the vision of the Civil Rights Movement. If you are interested in hearing a counter argument to CRT, Dr. Lindsay provides a well informed and well researched view that you are unlikely to hear anywhere else. "Critical Race Theory, Part 2" - w/UC Berkely Professor Ian Haney Lรณpez
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comIn the second episode of our series on Critical Race Theory, Will (Political Host) talks with one of the foremost experts on CRT, Professor Ian Lopez. Professor Lopez is more than just a academic who teaches it, but is also an understudy of Derrick Bell who often is credited as one of the originators of critical race theory. Unlike the first in the series, where we speak with Yale Professor Daniel Hosang, and break down some of the basic principles of CRT, Professor Lopez goes into the weeds a little bit deeper and talks about the significance of Dog Whistle Politics and how it is being used as a tool to manipulate voters, and is used by both Republicans and Democrats alike. The conversation then turns to the work he's done to research aspects of CRT in our national discourse with the Race-Class Narrative Project. For more information about Professor Ian Lopez, please visit his website:https://ianhaneylopez.comIf you want to learn more about the Race-Class Narrative Project visit:https://www.demos.org/campaign/race-class-narrative-projectIf you'd like to take the free Race-Class Academy course mentioned in the show visit: https://race-class-academy.comGuest Bio:Ian Haney Lรณpez is a law professor at UC Berkeley who studies racism. His focus for the last decade has been on the use of racism as a class weapon in electoral politics, and how to respond. In Dog Whistle Politics (2014), he detailed the fifty-year history of coded racism in American politics. Ian has since actively promoted the idea of a race-class fusion as the basis for a multi-racial progressive majority. He co-chaired the AFL-CIOโs Advisory Council on Racial and Economic Justice, along with Dorian Warren and Ana Avendaรฑo, and founded the Race-Class Narrative Project, along with Anat Shenker-Osorio and Heather McGhee. In his latest book, Merge Left: Fusing Race and Class, Winning Elections, and Saving America (2019), Ian explains Trumpโs complex relationship with dog whistling and further develops the race-class response.Ian is the Chief Justice Earl Warren Professor of Public Law Support the show๐ง Want to learn more about Faithful Politics, get in touch with the hosts, or suggest a future guest?๐ Visit our website: faithfulpoliticspodcast.com ๐ Check out our Bookstore โ Featuring titles from our amazing guests:faithfulpoliticspodcast.com/bookstore โค๏ธ Support the show โ Help us keep the conversation going:donorbox.org/faithful-politics-podcast ๐ฉ Reach out to us: Faithful Host, Josh Burtram: Josh@faithfulpolitics.com Political Host, Will Wright: Will@faithfulpolitics.com ๐ฑ Follow & connect with us: Twitter/X: @FaithfulPolitik Instagram: faithful_politics Facebook: FaithfulPoliticsPodcast LinkedIn: faithfulpolitics ๐ฐ Subscribe to our Substack for behind-the-scenes content:faithfulpolitics.substack.com ๐

"Critical Race Theory, Part 1" - w/Yale Professor Daniel Hosang
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comWe begin our discussion about Critical Race Theory (CRT) with a Primer of sorts to lay down the foundation for what CRT is, it's origins, and the different aspects of its application in academia and the classroom. As Michael Scott says in the office, "Why don't you explain it to me like I'm five", and this is just the approach we took with this episode. Whether you've been studying CRT your whole life, or have very strong opposition to it, this episode will at least lay down the framework for understanding it and help us navigate this controversial topic and series. In the first of our three part series we talk with Daniel Hosang who is a Professor at Yale University and teaches Ethnicity Race & Migration, and American Studies. He is a well respected scholar in this field and has worked with many of the pioneers of CRT, to include Kimberle Crenshaw. Guest Bio:Daniel Martinez HoSang received his BA in History from Wesleyan University and PhD in American Studies and Ethnicity from the University of Southern California. He is the author of Racial Propositions: Ballot Initiatives and the Making of Postwar California (University of California Press, 2010) which was awarded the 2011 James A Rawley Prize from the Organization of American Historians. He is co-editor, with Oneka LaBennett and Laura Pulido, of Racial Formation in the 21st Century (University of California Press, 2012). HoSangโs research and teaching explore the contradictory labor of race within U.S. political culture across a wide-range of sites, including electoral politics, social movements, and cultural production. He has a long record of collaboration with community-based organizations and labor unions as a trainer, board member, and advisor, with groups including the Restaurant Opportunities Center (ROC), the Alliance for a Just Society, Oakland Kids First!, the Partnership for Safety and Justice, and Forward Together. "When Rabbis Bless Congress" w/Howard Mortman, C-SPAN Communications Director
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comDid you know that since the nations founding there has always been a congressional chaplain? It's true, and to be honest, I didn't know that until I read "When Rabbis Bless Congress: The Great American Story of Jewish Prayers on Capitol Hill" written by C-SPAN Communications Director, Howard Mortman. Josh and Will talk with Howard's unprecedented examination of 160 years of Jewish prayers delivered in the literal and figurative center of American democracy. They discuss the journey, research, and stories of over 400 rabbis giving over 600 prayers since the Civil War daysโwho they are and what they say. Rabbis speak on a range of issues, to include one who has been in the news recently, Bill Cosby. This episode isn't uniquely focused on the Jewish community, nor does it attempt to further the "church and state debate". However, if you're interested in Congressional history, and how the prayer portion is, and always has been, the least offensive period during an open session, you'll want to listen/watch the whole episode. Guest Bio:Howard Mortman is communications director for C-SPAN, the public service providing television coverage of the U.S. Congress. A veteran of Washington, DC, media organizations, he has observed Congress from positions at MSNBC, National Journalโs Hotline, the Broadcasting Board of Governors, and New Media Strategies. Howard Mortman's first book was just published: "When Rabbis Bless Congress: The Great American Story of Jewish Prayers on Capitol Hill." He graduated from the University of Maryland and has appeared on stage performing stand-up comedy at the DC Improv -- although the two aren't related. "Executing Virginia" w/Professor Corinna Lain
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comVirginia is for lovers, so they say, but how is it that the first colonial settlement has been so instrumental, nay, influential in capital punishment? The commonwealth of Virginia is known for its fall colors, beautiful skylines, and developing a well oiled machine that executes people faster and with greater frequency than any other state. This week, we do a deep dive into the states rich history of executions, and talk about Virginia's recent abolishment of the death penalty. Could this bold act, the first in the south, have greater implications for the way the death penalty is applied at the national level? You'll have to listen to find out! Guest Bio:Professor Corinna Barrett Lain is a constitutional law scholar who writes about the influence of extralegal norms on Supreme Court decisionmaking, with a particular focus on the field of capital punishment. Her scholarship, which often uses the lens of legal history, has appeared in the Stanford Law Review, University of Pennsylvania Law Review, Duke Law Journal, UCLA Law Review, and Georgetown Law Journal, among other venues. "What does the Bible say about...?" w/Luke Timothy Johnson
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comThe Bible is a strange book, and yet people still read it gain insight from it, and worship the person for whom it was written about. On the flip side, it's also used as a weapon, from believers to atheists to push narratives that ostensibly go against the very foundations of the teachings found within its pages. To help us make some sense of this centuries-old document Josh and Will talk with world-renowned New Testament historian and scholar Luke Timothy Johnson. They talk about the rise of Christian Nationalism, what the Bible says about LGBTQ+, and how Christians should respond to the existence of aliens! Guest Bio:Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson is Candler School of Theologyโs Robert W. Woodruff Professor Emeritus, Emoryโs most distinguished endowed chair. A noted scholar and an award-winning teacher, Johnson taught at Yale Divinity School and Indiana University prior to arriving at Candler in 1992. His research concerns the literary, moral and religious dimensions of the New Testament, including the Jewish and Greco-Roman contexts of early Christianity (particularly moral discourse), Luke-Acts, the Pastoral Letters, and the Letter of James.A prolific author, Johnson has penned 31 books, more than 70 scholarly articles, 100 popular articles and nearly 200 book reviews. His 1986 book, The Writings of the New Testament: An Interpretation, now in its third edition, is widely used as a textbook in seminaries and departments of religion throughout the world. A decade later, Johnson made national headlines with The Real Jesus: The Misguided Quest for the Historical Jesus and the Truth of the Traditional Gospels(HarperOne, 1996), the first book to systematically challenge the Jesus Seminarโs controversial claims, among them that Jesus said only 18 percent of what the Gospels attribute to him.Homosexuality & The Church: https://www.commonwealmagazine.org/homosexuality-church-0 Support the show๐ง Want to learn more about Faithful Politics, get in touch with the hosts, or suggest a future guest?๐ Visit our website: faithfulpoliticspodcast.com ๐ Check out our Bookstore โ Featuring titles from our amazing guests:faithfulpoliticspodcast.com/bookstore โค๏ธ Support the show โ Help us keep the conversation going:donorbox.org/faithful-politics-podcast ๐ฉ Reach out to us: Faithful Host, Josh Burtram: Josh@faithfulpolitics.com Political Host, Will Wright: Will@faithfulpolitics.com ๐ฑ Follow & connect with us: Twitter/X: @FaithfulPolitik Instagram: faithful_politics Facebook: FaithfulPoliticsPodcast LinkedIn: faithfulpolitics ๐ฐ Subscribe to our Substack for behind-the-scenes content:faithfulpolitics.substack.com ๐

"Bamboo, Ballots, and Biden" w/Jessica Huseman
Have a comment? Send us a text! (We read all of them but can't reply). Email us: Will@faithfulpoliticspodcast.comElections are a foundation in our American democracy. They allow us to pick our presidents (sorta), vote for local representatives, and basically give us a voice in this country. You can think of elections like a much more impactful survey from Survey Monkey. However, unlike Survey Monkey, you would be hard pressed to find people willing to storm your office and stop the tallying of the results. This week we talk with someone who knows way more about elections than any human could possibly know. Jessica Huseman is a journalist from Texas who is the editorial director of Votebeat, a nonprofit newsroom and Chalkbeat spin-off which devotes itself to election reporting. She was the lead reporter at ProPublicaโs Electionland project, is a frequent guest on CNN discussing election issues and her writings have appeared in The Atlantic, Ms. Magazine and the Dallas Morning News.We discuss a wide range of issue from the state of election security, to the recent changes in election laws around the country, and then Jessica gives us some really good insight about the religious voting block and why they have been so effective at pushing for policies they believe in. Guest Bio:Jessica Huseman is the editorial director of Votebeat, an independent, non-profit newsroom covering voting rights, redistricting and election administration.
