Ben Uyeda stepped away from the award-winning architecture firm he co-founded, as well as an Ivy League teaching position, to develop media companies that deliver affordable designs to the masses. Today's episode is an audience question from Bobby, a creative asking about how to stay focused and finish projects. ADHD and mental health stuff aside, much of this question boils down to aligning goals, values and actions. What I mean by that is that if you say you are going to do something, do it. It might be uncomfortable, difficult or humbling, but once you get started, the angst of feeling stuck goes away, replaced by new sense of exploration and growth. The last thing you want is regret around your biggest passions. In this episode I share some of my thoughts to not only stay focused but finish projects. Your thoughts aren't something you have, they're something you hone. Passion and curiosity drive the artist towards a craft that usually isn't the most lucrative. Early on, we jump on any opportunity to make money. But quickly, reality sets in. Bills, taxes, medical costs, equipment- it adds up fast, and we realize that we going to have to charge more. So how do we scale a creative business? In this episode I take a question from Fritz, a photographer working hourly, about how to do just that. To get you thinking before the show: What part of the business do you love? How can you build your business in a way that you do more of the things you love and bring on other people to support the areas that don't light you up as much? Finally, never underestimate the power of your brand. Today, you might not be able to charge the high rate you feel you deserve, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to a year or two from now. Taking smaller clients and hustling along the way does not make you are ineligible to land the Nike's and Apples of the world down the road. Is it time to take the leap? Anyone you've admired, looked up to or emulated has, at some point, taken a necessary risk to move towards the living and life of their choice. Today, Pulitzer prize-winning poet Jericho Brown shares how he did just that, and the key to speaking truth through art. Jericho's advice for anyone beginning their journey struck me as profound, yet simple. What would a day look like if you were living your dream career/life/business? What you begin to realize is that there are things that you can do today, cost-free, to move towards that reality. "If you want to be a writer, then write for 5 minutes. Once you find 5 minutes, you can find 10, and 30, and once you are writing for 30 minutes a day you on your way," Jericho says. Jericho worked as a speechwriter for the Mayor of New Orleans before earning his PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. The New York Times Book Review notes his most recent collection The Tradition: "In Brown's poems, the body at risk — the infected body, the abused body, the black body, the body in eros — is most vulnerable to the cruelty of the world. But even in their most searing moments, these poems are resilient out of necessity, faithful to their account of survival, when survival is the hardest task of all: "So the Bible says, in the beginning, / Blackness. I am alive." CreativeLive student and filmmaker, Alec Cutter first came on my radar in 2016 during a live panel event in Seattle. After playing division one soccer at Gonzaga University, he moved to NYC with a dream to become a filmmaker, where he faced the classic chicken and egg dilemma. He needed a portfolio to get hired, but felt like getting hired was necessary to create a portfolio. Living on a friends couch, working multiple jobs, Alec used his spare time and income to create videos for cafes around Brooklyn. We get into the specifics around how those videos led to his full-time job in the industry and the path to his most recent project Nando, which was accepted into the Tribeca Film Festival.
