Brené Brown: The Quest For True Belonging
I asked and you voted. And well, it's no surprise that the audience choice for best episode on the podcast over the last 10 years and 300 episodes is one of my favorite people in the world, Brené Brown. Brené is a vulnerability and empathy expert and has one of the most watched TED Talks of all time on the subject. She is the author of four New York Times bestselling books, one of which, Daring Greatly, has served as a crucial resource for my own creativity. Her book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, is not only a tool for personal development, it's also a blueprint for communication at scale, especially in difficult conversations. We get into how loneliness is related to creativity, why artists have a unique ability to speak truth to bullshit, and setting boundaries without being a jerk. This stuff is critical to maximize the impact you have with your work, art, craft, etc. Brené's ability to stand alone didn't come easy, that was something she trained and practiced. As she discloses in the show, although she often gives speeches to large audiences, she identifies as an introvert and feels the same social anxiety we all experience. If you're new to this episode, I can't wait for you to hear this. If you've already listened a time or two, thanks for selecting it for another listen. I would not be surprised if something hits you that needed to hear right now. Enjoy! Have a question? Public Failure, Money, and Craft
A while back I received an e-mail from a guy named Mike Ducille. It was an invitation to Mike's book club, which includes a number of other like-minded creators and entrepreneurs. Some topics we get into: Lessons learned from a failed app launch- what do you do after a major failure? I'm not talking about a little mis-step. How do you bounce back from a potentially career-stifling blow? The psychology of money (check out Ramit Sethi's book). Ramit is also launching a podcast to bolster the stuff he's already putting out in the world. Highly recommended checking it out, especially if you want to improve your mindset around money. Scaling a business by charging higher prices- time is a powerful tool. As you gain experience, connections and skill, you need to charge higher prices. What if you could sell your work for 10x more than you do now? The key here is finding the market and conveying value to the right person. Sending effective personal messages, collaborating with high profile folks, handling guests' busy schedules... Knowing how to navigate the world of assistants, LinkedIn and cold e-mails gives you leg up on your counterparts. I love this stuff. What Mike and his book club are doing is a great example of how to use online community to lift each other up. Enjoy! Have a question? Pricing creative work if an art onto itself. Should you charge hourly or by the project? Are you pricing yourself out of desperation or with profit in mind? How Art Creates Culture and Culture Creates Art with Ryan Abeo and Charles Mudede
Recently this show crossed over 300 episodes. Yes, that's right 300 over the last 11 years. Wow. So in celebration, I wanted to do a little look back on the origins of the show, why we made specific decisions (such as why black & white) and what we've learned along the way. I also dug around in the archives looking at some of the earliest shows. Including this episode with my good friends Ryan Abeo (recording artist) and Charles Mudede (writer, director, cultural critic). 11 years later and this conversation is still insanely relevant. The topic is around hip-hop, but it's really about how art creates culture, and culture creates art. In a way, it was a good launch pad for what would be the next 11 years of the show. 300 episodes in and we aren't stopping anytime soon. Thank YOU for being a critical part of this journey. Sharing the content, writing reviews, asking thoughtful questions and joining the conversation. It would not be the show it is, without you. Onto the next 300 🚀🚀🚀 Enjoy! --- Today's episode is brought to you by CreativeLive. Why Clients Call You Back
From concept to final product, a master manages and calculates every aspect of their craft. The environment, the expectations, the communication throughout. The catch is, the only tried and true way to master something is to gain experience doing it the wrong way. So what do you do when it's not working out? In this episode, I respond to this very question from Rod covering topics such as the creative gap, performing in high-pressure situations, managing risk, and how to communicate with the client if expectations aren't aligning. Ultimately, how you handle these scenarios is why clients will (or will not) call you back. Enjoy! Have a question? Nothing beats undeterred enthusiasm for doing something you absolutely love doing. 6 Things I do for a Happy, Productive Day
I believe that daily actions cultivate our mindset and, in turn, our mindset determines much about our lives; not only external things like success and fulfillment, but also how we handle adversity, mental/physical health, and more. Today's episode was part of the Chase Jarvis RAW series on YouTube where I share a number of things I do first thing in the morning that have a tremendously positive impact on my day. My goal isn't to be prescriptive in this list, rather my aim is to tell you what I'VE come to know helps me crush…and be a better person. Do I miss some of these things every day? Absolutely. I'm so far from perfect with this stuff, it's laughable, but the fact remains that I put a lot of effort into kicking off my day with these few things. Enjoy! Have a question? Old School Photography (+ other musings) with Kai Wong
If you've ever looked up film and digital camera lessons on YouTube, there's a high chance you've bumped into Kai Wong's top-of-the-game photography videos or even come across one of his videos featuring yours truly + a lego camera. Previously known for creating innovative content with a humorous bent for one of YouTube's most subscribed photography channels, DigitalRev, Kai quit his seven-year-long association with the Media House in 2016. After stepping down as the company's face and presenter, he started his own YouTube channel, Kai W, which now has over 67 million views and nearly 1 million subscribers worldwide. Kai joins me on the podcast today to discuss how he made the best use of the past year, isolating (or introspecting) and writing his first book, Old School Photography: 100 Things You Must Know to Take Fantastic Film Photos. While emulating others' work could give you a head start for creating content or writing your book, Kai explains why being authentic in front of your audience is critical in the long run. Some other things we discuss in the episode include: Kai's expansive knowledge of camera lenses, film and gear The winning tips to building a strong YouTube channel: personality-driven, casual, accessible, unique From ideation to creating ingenious unscripted videos - Kai's way The timelessness of old-school photography equipment and techniques Why the rewards of writing a book outweigh the challenges Enjoy! You Must Fail to Succeed
"Opportunities are like buses, there's always another one coming." -Richard Branson Be ready to catch the next bus. This episode is a reminder that failing is necessary in order to succeed. If we are only focused on what could have been, we fail to see opportunities that are right at our fingertips. In this episode I recount the experience building "Best Camera," a photo sharing app that gained global publicity and over 1 million downloads. Today's story begins with a barrage of texts and emails, and I describe my mindset shortly after a new app called Instagram sold to Facebook for $1B, crushing Best Camera's trajectory. Failure could have defined this part of my story, but instead, I continued to innovate, ultimately discovering the path that led to found CreativeLive. So, if failing is inevitable, how can we fail better? Other topics in this episode include: Recurring thoughts of what could have been Resilience and grit Not chasing missed opportunities How to hear the word no and move on Talent emerges through effort Trusting the process Enjoy!
