Stay ahead of aging and illness | Genes Are Just The Beginning | Human Longevity and HLI

Chief of Radiogenomics & Interim Chief Executive Officer David S. Karow, M.D., Ph.D., Chief of Radiogenomics and interim CEO at HLI, is an innovative leader who brings more than 10 years of experience in advanced MR Imaging and genomic analytics.   Dr. Karow’s primary interest is to develop machine-learning based integrated diagnostics that leverage imaging, genetic, and clinical biomarkers to generate more insightful health assessments and identify disease in early stages when it is most treatable. Before joining HLI, Dr. Karow was the Director of Body MRI and Director of Acute Care Imaging in the Department of Radiology at University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego), where he still maintains an appointment as an Associate Professor.   During his time at UC San Diego he implemented advanced diffusion-based methods that proved beneficial for the detection and in vivo characterization of prostate tumors. The work has yielded multiple published papers and led to multiple federal and private research grants on which Dr. Karow was Principal Investigator. Dr. Karow is compiling data showing that these techniques may be useful for the screening and staging of cancer across the whole body including breast cancer.   Dr. Karow completed his fellowship in diagnostic and non-vascular interventional radiology, including tumor ablations, at University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to fellowship, he completed his residency in diagnostic radiology at UC San Diego.   His research during residency was recognized with multiple awards, including the 2011 Elliott C. Lasser Award for Excellence in Research; 2009 American Roentgen Ray Society Executive Council Award; the 2008 RSNA Trainee Research Prize; and his work was also featured on the cover of the September 2010 issue of the journal Radiology. Prior to residency, Dr. Karow completed his medical training at the University of Michigan medical school in the combined M.D./Ph.D. Medical Scientist Training Program, graduating with a distinction in research. Neuroscience Design Firm engagedIN and WalMart Partner Launch Healthy Habit App Fresh Tri

Today we sit down with Kyra Bobinet, MD MPH, CEO of neuroscience design firm engagedIN who recently (September 2018) announced Fresh Tri, engagedIN’s new practice app for science-based healthy habits.   At the Health 2.0 conference in Silicon Valley, David Hoke, Sr. Director, Associate Health and Well-being at Walmart and Kyra Bobinet, MD MPH, CEO of neuroscience design firm engagedIN announced Fresh Tri, engagedIN’s new practice app for science-based healthy habits. Walmart is launching Fresh Tri to associates and customers to empower effective behavior change, starting with healthy eating.   Fresh Tri curates habits proven effective through scientific studies and crowdsourced success from many Walmart associates who dramatically changed their lives. It focuses on cultivating the iterative mindset, focusing people on practice and experimentation to achieve long-lasting, healthy habits.   Through this approach, Fresh Tri is specially designed to steer around brain areas that hurt motivation—to remove feelings of failure and self-blame from a person’s behavior change efforts. It guides users to practice what they feel most motivated to try from a catalog of behaviors that have demonstrated success for others like them.   Using a toolkit of behavioral neuroscience and rigorous literature review, engagedIN designed Fresh Tri to leverage how the brain functions during habit formation. It can bridge the brain-behavior gap between what people wish they would do and what they actually do. Fresh Tri employs game-like interfaces, compassion design, and mindfulness science in helping users to test-drive healthy habits and iterate on them as needed to find what ultimately sticks.   “The reason that people fail is because they quit trying,” said Dr. Bobinet. “If people could keep trying, I’m pretty sure that everyone would have a breakthrough.”   Fresh Tri solves this, Dr. Bobinet explained, “by working with, instead of against, the brain.”   Dr. Kyra Bobinet, the CEO-founder of engagedIN was also the Keynote speaker at the 2018 CMT Concierge Medicine FORUM held in Atlanta, GA, Friday, October 26, 2018 at 9:00am ET thru Saturday, October 27, 2018 at 3pm ET. Employed Vs. Independent Doctors: Which Path Is Right For You?

Today we sit down with Marni Jameson Carey, MA, the Executive Director, Association of Independent Doctors (www.AID-US.org)   Marni Jameson Carey is the executive director of the Association of Independent Doctors (AID), a national nonprofit designed to support America's independent doctors, stop the trend of health-care consolidation and, thus, reduce health-care costs. An award-winning journalist, Ms. Carey worked as senior health reporter for Tribune Media, writing for the Los Angeles Times and the Orlando Sentinel before taking on her role at AID in 2014.   She is also past president of a medical marketing firm, author of four books, a nationally syndicated columnist, and frequent TV guest and speaker.   Since joining AID, Ms. Carey has been featured in over 50 media outlets including Forbes, NBC, FOX, Bloomberg, Becker's, Modern Healthcare and Medical Economics. Combining her health-care and communications experience, Ms. Carey now serves as the voice of independent doctors who don't have the time, resources or clout to speak out against the formidable forces facing them, including pressure to sell out to hospitals, and excessive government regulations.   A doctor's advocate, Ms. Carey has addressed lawmakers and physician leaders on Capitol Hill numerous times, and has spoken at many national conferences. She works closely with the Federal Trade Commission to enforce anti-trust laws, and regularly collaborates with like-minded groups to champion physician autonomy and keep the health-care relationship between Doctors and Patients.   Ms. Carey received her bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Kansas, and her master's degree in writing from Vermon College.   Referenced Resources www.AID-US.org   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC.
