Clinical Genetics, TeleGenetics with Dr. Dana Simpson and Dr. Alexander Mason

Today we sit down on The DocPreneur Leadership Podcast with two very special Doctors to discuss the role clinical genetics plays in treating a patient today and what role this will play in the exam room and in a medical office in the near future.   Dana (Kostiner) Simpson, MD received her B.A. in Biology at U.C. San Diego (UCSD) and her medical degree at George Washington University School of Medicine in D.C. She completed her Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) in Denver and did her Genetics Fellowship at U.C. San Francisco (UCSF). She worked as a Clinical Geneticist at Kaiser Permanente, Northwest from 2002-2019, and also worked in the Internal Medicine float pool for the first 7 years. She worked as Chief of the Genetics Department for the latter 12 years. She joined Specialist Telemed as a founding member of STeM-Gen in 2019. Dana lives with her husband and two young children in Portland, Oregon. In her free time, she enjoys earning Splat point at Orangetheory Fitness, building legos with her kids, going to Blazer games, and getting some culture at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival.   Dr. Alex Mason is a practicing neurosurgeon with a passion for telemedicine. He has been involved in outreach telemedicine projects since his training was completed in 2008, starting with working at Grady Hospital in Atlanta, GA. Understanding and seeing the significant challenges of access to healthcare, he began working with organizations to establish meaningful measures of patient access to specialists throughout the country. As a medical advisor to Specialist Telemed, he has been instrumental in identifying both traditional specialties that are underserved, as well as new specialties such as TeleGenetics that are in high demand and have had challenges with regard to access.   RESOURCES MENTIONED www.SpecialistTeleMed.com   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. Perfecting the Patient Experience -- "Build it" for the Patient

Today our special guest is Shareef Mahdavi, CEO of SM2 Strategic. Shareef's career has been focused on helping doctors be better in their chosen profession.   SM2 helps clients be better and smarter in the marketing of elective self-pay procedures. Shareef has worked with numerous medical device companies and start-ups and has advised thousands of doctors over his career. In today's interview, we discuss How and Why Doctors Should See Each Patient As A Customer.   We'll talk about why this is a challenging concept to embrace in healthcare, provide examples of where this is working and examine specifically how Doctors can "Turn their Medical Office into a Memorable Customer/Patient Experience."   A frequent speaker and author, Shareef was recognized for his work to improve the patient experience as recipient of the 2011 Experience Management Award, given annually by Experience Economy authors Pine and Gilmore in recognition of leadership in customer experience. Beginning as a management trainee at SmithKline Beckman, Shareef rose through sales and marketing roles at Allergan Humphrey (now Zeiss) and went on to lead the marketing launch at VISX, developer of the LASIK laser. He started SM2 Strategic in 2001 to help doctors and companies build demand for services and procedures where patients pay directly, broadly described as self-pay or elective healthcare.   Since then, has helped more than 50 companies and thousands of doctors. The firm's focus has expanded in recent years to include helping doctors make better financial decisions regarding daily operations as well as the future of their practices.   Resources: You can connect with Shareef Mahdavi and his firm at www.sm2strategic.com.   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. Spotlight on Palliative Concierge Care, Meet Dr. Sherika Newman

Today we sit down with Dr. Sherika Newman.   This is an uniquely different topic that we're talking about today as we discuss Palliative Care in the practice and healthcare space of Concierge Medicine.   According to the WHO, an estimated 40 million people are in need of palliative care each year, 78% of them people live in low- and middle-income countries. Worldwide, only about 14% of people who need palliative care currently receive it. ... Early palliative care reduces unnecessary hospital admissions and the use of health services.[1]   Palliative care is an approach that improves the quality of life of patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual.   Dr. Sherika Newman is the physician every patient deserves. With a gentle spirit and a listening ear, she pours love into every patient experience. For Dr. Newman, palliative care is not just a practice; it’s a calling. After attending Nova Southeastern College of Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL, she completed her Family Medicine residency in 2008.   In 2009, she finished her Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at Broward Health. Since then, Dr. Newman has played a leading role in both inpatient and outpatient palliative medicine including operating her own private practice from 2009-2011, leading the Lee Memorial Hospital Q-Life Palliative Medicine Program from 2011 until 2014 and managing at Emory University as the Palliative Site Director of Emory Saint Joseph Hospital until July 2017. Her experience has earned her the recognition to serve as a national leader in palliative care.   RELATED STORY Differences Between Palliative Care and Hospice [2]   In 2012, Dr. Newman was a nominee for the Robert Wood Johnson Leadership Award. She has also left her mark on the Florida Physician’s Orders for Life-Sustaining Therapy (POLST). With Dr. Newman, you get more than just a physician; she has a heart for the people.   She is a public speaker who uses local and regional platforms to educate communities on Palliative Care including an appearance on ABC affiliate WZVN in Fort Myers, where she spoke openly about compassionate care. With Doctors In The Family, Dr. Newman offers patients a double dose of compassion and experience. Practicing alongside her colleague, Michelle Evans, the two bring nearly two decades of success to family medicine. Dr. Newman gives patients the personal touch providing an intimate restorative experience.   “It’s about our family caring for your family,” she said.   The care Dr. Newman provides is unforgettable. She brings patients peace and comfort during the most difficult times of their lives. She not only heals; she delivers.   To connect with Dr. Newman and the practice, Doctor in the Family ...   Office: 404-590-0626 http://www.facebook.com/myditf www.myditf.com   Doctor in the Family 35 Collier Road NW #185  Atlanta, GA 30309   RESOURCES MENTIONED   www.myditf.com   Sources and Citations   https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/palliative-care https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/what-are-palliative-care-and-hospice-care   © Concierge Medicine Today, LLC. Originally from Spain, health technology entrepreneur, Carlos Reines, was recognized for his passion democratizing access to medical expertise at RubiconMD, the leading solution that connects primary care clinicians to specialists for remote electronic consults.
