27. ‘’Paul’’- Prostate Cancer Conqueror & Passionate Swimmer with a Sling!

Meet Paul. Paul is a 75 year old swimmer and a survivor of Prostate Cancer. Instead of opting for the usual prostatectomy, he opted for Robotic Surgery. You see, Paul is an avid swimmer and having the usual operation to remove his prostate was not ideal – so after discussion and great decisiveness, he opted for the Robotic surgery. When we asked Paul about the pain after the surgery, he said ‘Very, very little’. The pain was very little that he was able to go back to swimming activities even just after 4 weeks. He just had to go back to the swimming pool as soon as possible (what an amazing drive!). However, the major problem that Paul encountered was that he was leaking heavily – leaking at almost a litre and a half a day. He was using almost 7 pads per day. Even disposing the pads was quite an issue. He had to actually duck into women’s toilets to dispose of them!   Here’s an episode where we discussed the initiative of providing Bins for Blokes (Episode 10) >>  And when he swims, he has to use tissue papers to hide the leakage. (Sorry, we forgot to ask what brand of tissue he used!)  Then he met with Dr. Jo who gave him a lot of confidence to handle the incontinence.  To also help with the leakage, he opted for the Advanced Sling Operation. You can actually find out more about this in Episode 19 where Mr. Positive Penis talked about it. Please click here to listen to Episode 19 >>  The operation helped him address the leakage but had to endure almost 6 weeks of pain from the operation site.  Here are some amazing takeaways from this episode:  Apples are OUT, Oranges are IN for constipation.  Buy good quality tissues!  Drinking more than 4 glasses of champagne causes leakage.  Keep taking PSA tests even after surgery and encourage the ones around you to take the test, too.  Do not procrastinate, do your exercises. Clubs and joining support groups are very important.   And lastly,  Know that you can do whatever you like, but it’s gonna come from within and it should be something that you really like. Passion is the key to a long happy life.   -------- The Penis Project Podcast is the place to come to find out everything you’ve always wanted to know about men’s health but were too embarrassed to ask.   The Penis Project is sponsored by PROST! 25. Penile injections – Busting the Myths with “Melissa”. A pop up episode

For Episode 25, we will talk about Intracavernosal Injections (or ICI). Feel free to listen to Episode 1 and Episode 3 and learn from Phil and Parker’s experience. ;)    But I’d like to bust some myths about doing penis injections.  Priapism is not a normal effect. It doesn’t actually hurt. If you don’t believe me (and I dont blame you) listen to the experts (other men) give their view    So… if you are sick of waiting and want to get your Mojo back or are just an Eager Beaver, one of your options is to do ICI or penis injections.    Here’s a video on how to do it (in case you find it hard to picture the procedure from me talking in this episode).    Here's a video of Melissa doing ICI injections >>   Take-away message from this episode is  ‘keep an open mind’ and ‘‘prior preparation prevents a piss poor performance’ .   Link of Anatomy of a Penis in Episode 4 >>   ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/ https://www.theyogavine.com.au   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/

24. ‘’Ron” – Mindset and Fighting the Black Dog in Prostate Cancer

And how emotions can spiral after treatment.   Welcome to Episode 24!  In this episode, we talk to Ron.     Previous episodes have focused on treatment and recovery of continence and sexual function following prostate cancer.  This week will look at prostate cancer from a different angle, the emotional one.  Ron generously discussed his emotions during this difficult time.   So here we go...    Ron’s approach when he learned of his Prostate Cancer diagnosis was pragmatic. He said he had three boxes to tick.   First, get treated. Second, handle incontinence. Third, sexual function.  The first two were easy, the third not so easy and then there was the fourth which snuck up on him - the black dog.    What helped him? Writing down his thoughts. And happy pills.    Ron’s advice to men experiencing the same?  Reach out to someone as soon as you can and don’t be afraid to use happy pills.    3 Reiterations from this Episode:  The importance of continuous pelvic floor exercises. Why it is important to reach out to someone sooner rather than later. Partners coming along to consultations is really helpful - for both - the patient and the partner.   Listen to the full episode below.   The Penis Project Podcast is the place to come to find out everything you've always wanted to know about men's health but were too embarrassed to ask. 23. ‘’Mrs Parker” - The partner’s perspective in Prostate Cancer

Episode 23: Mrs. Parker Prostae Cancer from a wife’s perspective   We have received a lot of requests to interview and hear the stories of the partners of patients diagnosed with Prostate Cancer.    So for today’s episode, please meet Mrs. Parker.    Mrs. Parker is Mr. Parker’s spouse, who we interviewed for our 3rd episode. If you have not listened to Mr. Parker’s interview, click here to listen to Episode 3: Parker.    Mr. and Mrs. Parker were just recently married when they both learned of the Prostate Cancer diagnosis.    At first, they were both anxious but with good prognosis and faith in the healthcare system, they moved to proceed with the advised treatment.    Mrs. Parker always joined Mr. Parker at his appointments, from pre-op throughout his journey.   She mentions that it is important to go along with your partner so you can pick up information that your partner might miss.    Her advice, “It is a good thing to go along”.  There are two takeaways we’d love to share with you coming from this Episode  For significant others, it is good to go along with your partner during appointments.  Don't be disappointed in the first 12 months if you can only get a good erection with injections or oral medications.    We hope you enjoy Mrs. Parker's story and learn more about injections, and when is the best time to use oral meds vs injections, and a ton more of helpful information.     Stay tuned for the final lesson at the end, especially for the campers out there! ;)    ------ The Penis Project Podcast is the place to come to find out everything you've always wanted to know about men's health but were too embarrassed to ask. 20. In depth with Dr Jo – A PhD review

Welcome to the Penis Project podcast!  Today, we speak with the other half of The Penis Project Podcast gigglers - Dr. Jo Milios.  Dr. Jo discusses her new research, the subject thereof, which is one that she accidentally stumbled upon when she noticed a gap between pelvic floor exercises and positive continence control. Dr. Jo's prior research, "The Therapeutic Interventions for Patients with Prostate Cancer Undergoing Radical Prostatectomy; A Focus on Urinary Incontinence, Erectile Function, and Peyronies Disease", was recognised for its good use for patients who have undergone surgery for Prostate Cancer.  However, Dr. Jo noticed a gap. Interventions to mitigate the effects of radiation therapy, for patients who opted for this kind of treatment, in relation to urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction were ABSENT. And this is the focus of her present research and follows the old but still golden nugget adage, prevention is better than cure.  Listen as Dr. Jo discusses a gap that might perhaps be patched up... with your help.    To help Dr. Jo, please visit this gofundme page:  https://www.gofundme.com/f/probe-4-prostate-cancer-radiation-patients?utm_source=customer&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=p_cp+share-sheet   Thank you so much!   ------- Want to consult with Melissa? 19. “Mr Positive Penis”– Prostate Cancer, Incontinence & a Sling

So Penis Project podcasters, you asked for it so we have delivered. This is a story where things post prostate treatment didn’t go quite as planned. Mr Positive Penis had a long rough road but got there eventually. Both Jo and I have had a lot of feedback that we have presented positive stories re prostate cancer rehab. So we have listened and given you a view from the not so rosey side.   Today, we speak with Positive Penis who didn't have the happiest of starts.    Positive Penis was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in October 2018. He started his pelvic floor sessions way in December before his February prostate surgery. Despite starting pre-surgery and the positive outlook that he'd be up and about after the surgery him having an active lifestyle, that was not the case - not at all.    According to Positive Penis, 'It wasn't easy'.    At two months after surgery, Mr. Positive Penis was still on antibiotics due to UTI. And at six months, he was still heavily leaking - the highest being 380g a day.    It was only after 18 months when he heard these words from a colleague, 'It's great to have you back', that he really felt he was on track.    Despite the hardships and setbacks, Mr. Positive Penis was able to travel 7 countries in 7 weeks (with the help of a penis clamp) and walk from Cape-to-Cape to celebrate their 50th anniversary.    Mr. Positive Penis also had to go through Urodynamics - an assessment of pressure flows of the bladder and rectum. It might sound awful but according to Mr. Positive Penis it was all ok - it is something needed to be done after all. The result was that he had poor control of his bladder.    Listen too as he talks about 'The Sling' ~ which made things better!   And then Mr. Positive Penis talks about Melissa, how he was surprised that 'people like Melissa' exists 😂, the importance of cuddling, snuggling, and communication.   From the experience, here's what Mr. Positive Penis has to say:    "You should not be alone, you don't need to rely on 1 or 2 people. Think of who could be your team. :) You are not actually by yourself, you need to be aware of who could best support you."    Listen to Mr. Positive Penis, Dr. Jo, and Melissa to know more about the things that are being done when things aren't as rosey after surgery - urodynamics, penile clamps, dribbling, sling, artificial sphincter, the great effects of pelvic floor exercises, pilates to help with incontinence, pushing boundaries, staying positive, and a lot more!  ---------- Websites: https://melissahadleybarrett.com   Men’s health only https://rshealth.com.au/  All genders http://www.menshealthphysiotherapy.com.au/ http://prost.com.au/   Facebook: https://m.facebook.com/p/Melissa-Hadley-Barrett-100085237672685/ https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100085146627814   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melissahadleybarrett/ https://www.instagram.com/restorativehealth.clinic/ TikTok: @melissahadleybarrett YouTube: Melissa Hadley Barrett Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/melissa-hadley-barrett/
