Jason Reza Jorjani, PhD, is a philosopher and author of Prometheus and Atlas, World State of Emergency, Lovers of Sophia, Novel Folklore: The Blind Owl of Sadegh Hedayat, Iranian Leviathan: A Monumental History of Mithra’s Abode, and Prometheism. Here he highlights the fact that Heidegger maintains that technology is prior to science, and is a necessary condition for science. In fact, human beings are uniquely defined by their use of technology. Paradoxically, technology is also potentially a dehumanizing force. The implications of an eventual technological singularity are enormous. He argues that we must become conscious of the Promethean spirit that is driving technological advancements. Mervat Nasser, MD, MPhil, FRCPsych, is a graduate of Cairo Medical School and fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, London. Jeffrey Mishlove references the Illuminationist school of Sufi philosophy, as expounded by the twelfth century Persian philosopher and mystic, Suhrawardi, and popularized in recent times by the French philosopher, Henry Corbin. The concept of the “imaginal” as very distinct from “imagination” is also implicit in Carl G. Jung’s explication of psychological dynamics, as imparted to him by the angelic figure of Philemon. Jeffrey contrasts these visionary experiences with the journey of Susan Blackmore from parapsychologist to skeptic. Adam Crabtree, RP, is a trainer of psychotherapists and has a private therapy practice in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, He is author of From Mesmer to Freud: Magnetic Sleep and the Roots of Psychological Healing, Multiple Man: Explorations in Possession and Multiple Personality, Trance Zero: Breaking the Spell of Conformity, Evolutionary Love and the Ravages of Greed, and The Land of Hypnogogia. He is also coauthor of Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century, and he is coeditor of Beyond Physicalism: Toward Reconciliation of Science and Spirituality. Here he explains that he is using the term hypnogogia to describe explorations of one’s psychic depths including, but not limited to, states associated with sleep and dreaming. He shares a number of his own hypnogogic journeys – starting at the age of five. He discusses the sense of dread that sometimes accompanies these encounters with the unknown within. He also suggests that, while each individual is absolutely unique, there is a universal quality, independent of cultural conditioning, to hypnogogic terrain.
