Jack Hunter, PhD, is author of Spirits, Gods, and Magic: An Introduction to the Anthropology of the Supernatural; Engaging the Anomalous; and is editor of an anthology titled Greening the Paranormal: Exploring the Ecology of Extraordinary Experience. He is also coeditor, with David Luke, of Talking With The Spirits: Ethnographies From Between The Worlds. He is also founder of the journal, Paranthropology. Here he describes different approaches taken to the realm of spirits by scholars in anthropology. He recalls his own fieldwork studying spiritualist mediumship in the United Kingdom. He presents various cases suggesting that spiritual entities are part of the natural world. However, he acknowledges that it is exceedingly tricky to distinguish between living agent psi and autonomous spiritual entities. His other books include The Millennium Myth: Love and Death and the End of Time, Final Choice: Death or Transcendence?, Soulmaking: Uncommon Paths to Self Understanding and Smile of the Universe: Miracles in an Age of Disbelief. Here he describes a variety of paranormal events that have been reported to occur in a religious context. These include statues or images that weep or bleed, instantaneous healings, apparitions of the madonna, levitation, and Hindu puja offerings of milk that disappear. He argues that such events are often so well-attested, often with photographs and scientific corroboration, that it is reasonable to assume that they actually did occur. They are on the same spectrum as paranormal events that occur outside of a religious context. Jeffrey Mishlove explores the complex relationship Rudolf Steiner had with the person and legacy of Friedrich Nietzsche. Steiner maintained that Nietzsche has been a Franciscan ascetic monk in a previous lifetime. He believed himself to be the reincarnated spirit of the medieval philosopher Thomas Aquinas. Steiner saw both himself and Nietzsche as wrestling with the darkest of spiritual forces. Adam Crabtree, RP, is a trainer of psychotherapists and has a private therapy practice in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, He is author of From Mesmer to Freud: Magnetic Sleep and the Roots of Psychological Healing, Multiple Man: Explorations in Possession and Multiple Personality, Trance Zero: Breaking the Spell of Conformity, Evolutionary Love and the Ravages of Greed, and The Land of Hypnogogia. He is also coauthor of Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century, and he is coeditor of Beyond Physicalism: Toward Reconciliation of Science and Spirituality. Here he proclaims his belief that Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 – 1900) was the greatest philosopher of all time, because he understood more clearly than anyone else how previous philosophies and institutions undermined human freedom and human possibility. Debbie Joffe Ellis, wife of the late Albert Ellis, founder of REBT, is a licensed Australian psychologist and is licensed in NY as mental health counselor. She has a doctorate in alternative medicine from the Indian Board of Alternative Medicines in affiliation with the World Health Organization, from which she has also received a gold medal (1993) in recognition of her service in the field of alternative medicine.
