Laurin Bellg, MD, is chair of the Department of Medicine for ThedaCare in Appleton, Wisconsin. She is also director of two intensive care units. She is author of Near Death in the ICU. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, she describes the range of ostensibly paranormal experiences that her patients have experienced either during medical crises or during surgery. These include out-of-body experiences, classical near-death experiences, and visitations of deceased relatives. Sometimes these experiences are very positive for the patients. Sometimes they are frightening. She notes that if family members and friends or medical professionals invalidate these experiences when patients report them, this may have a damaging effect. Even when such reports are clearly hallucinatory, such as when a patient who is not ambulatory describes walking around through the hospital, those who hear such reports would do well to keep an open mind. Stuart Hameroff, MD, is a professor of anesthesiology and psychology at the Banner University Medical Center of the University of Arizona in Tucson. He is also co-founder and director of the Center for Consciousness Studies at the University of Arizona. He is author of Ultimate Computing: Biomolecular Consciousness and Nanotechnology. Since 1994, he has organized the “Toward a Science of Consciousness” conferences at the University of Arizona and elsewhere. Working with Sir Roger Penrose, he is the co-author of the “Orch OR” theory of consciousness. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, he focuses on the idea that consciousness is an orchestrated whole. This, he maintains, is accomplished through quantum coherence unifying the various activities of the brain. The orchestra of consciousness occurs at various, specific frequency resonances. He also describes how our experience of time is related to the rate at which we process information and experience conscious moments. Time seems to slow down when the brain is processing information at a faster rate. In addition he suggests, in accordance with Roger Penrose’s interpretation of quantum theory, that information in the brain can travel backwards through time. Jeffrey Mishlove examines the theory of cognitive dissonance as enunciated by Leon Festinger and colleagues in their 1956 classic sociological text, When Prophecy Fails. The book involves the story of a UFO cult in Chicago that anticipated the end of the world. When the prophecy failed to materialize, many cult members strengthened their belief in the cult leader and began proselytizing. Jeffrey suggests that the current political division in the United States regarding who will be inaugurated in January 2021 offers a unique opportunity to further test Festinger’s theory. Stephen Braude, PhD, served as chairman of the philosophy department at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He has also served as president of the Parapsychological Association. He is author of Crimes of Reason, The Gold Leaf Lady, Immortal Remains, The Limits of Influence, First Person Plural, and ESP and Psychokinesis. He is the recent recipient of the prestigious Myers Memorial Medal awarded by the Society for Psychical Research for outstanding contributions. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, he notes that apparitions were studied extensively by the British Society for Psychical Research in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Basically, there are two categories of apparitions: those of the living and those of the deceased. Thousands of such cases have been reported and researched. The most common of these is known as the “crisis apparition” and often occurs in relationship to a death or accident. Often apparitions are thought of as a mental phenomenon, probably produced by telepathy. Sometimes they are pure psychological projections or are produced by hypnosis. However, Braude maintains that collective apparitions cannot readily be explained this way. He argues that apparitions that are seen by many people simultaneously may be physical phenomena produced by psychokinesis. Elaine Dundon, MBA, is co-author, with her husband Alex Pattakos, PhD, of The OPA! Way: Finding Joy & Meaning in Everyday Life & Work. She is also author of the international, best-selling book, The Seeds of Innovation. With her husband, she is also co-founder of The Global Meaning Institute. She is a former faculty member at the University of Toronto. In this video, originally recorded in 2015, she points out that a third of the words we use in English have Greek roots. Ancient Greece gave birth to philosophy and to the important notion that our fate is determined by how we develop our character. The very word, philosophy, means “the love of wisdom.” She describes how, in her travels through the villages of Greece, she and her husband discovered many wisdom teachings alive in the lives of the people. She also points out how the Greek people have survived through many invasions and other crises throughout the millennia. As a result of this history they have learned how to find meaning in life under a wide range of circumstances.
