NOTE: this episode contains graphic and explicit content based on its thematic focus on wartime sexual violence. In this episode, the #BruteCast continues its focus on the war in #Ukraine with Dr. Dara Kay Cohen, who discusses issues of wartime sexual violence and what is currently known about sexual violence from #Russia's ongoing invasion of #Ukraine. The Sexual Violence in Armed Conflict (SVAC) dataset that Dr. Cohen references in this presentation can be accessed here: http://www.sexualviolencedata.org/ In a 2021 article in the Annual Review of Political Science, Dr. Cohen reassessed the literature on wartime sexual violence to develop a deeper understanding about when, where, why, and under what conditions sexual violence occurs as well as its consequences. That article can be accessed here: https://www.annualreviews.org/doi/abs/10.1146/annurev-polisci-041719-102620 Dr. Dara Kay Cohen is Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #13 - Turkey and Greece

Sometimes, 13 is a lucky number, and in this rapid-fire episode we were indeed lucky to be joined by some of #TeamKrulak on location in Athens, Greece! Dr. Amin Tarzi, director of Middle East Studies at the Krulak Center, and Maj John Behrmann, director of the Center for Regional and Security Studies, dialed in from Athens to focus on the role(s) Turkey has played both as a member of NATO and neighbor of #Russia during the invasion of #Ukraine. They also discussed how the war has altered the security environment in the Black Sea and eastern Mediterranean regions. All opinions expressed here are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of the Krulak Center, Marine Corps University, the United States Marine Corps, or any other agency of the U.S. Government. Down the Rabbit Hole on the Russia-Ukraine War #12 - Timelines and Sustainment

For a second episode in a row, "Down the Rabbit Hole on the #Russia-#Ukraine War" welcomes a special guest! Dr. Rita Konaev, a Fellow at Georgetown University's Center for Security and Emerging Technology - and a #BruteCast veteran - joined Krulak Center Distinguished Fellow and #Russia subject matter expert Dr. Yuval Weber to examine two themes: timelines and sustainment. There are many competing timelines at play, from Western weapons deliveries to Russian offensive tempo, from the impact of Western sanctions on Russia to the ability of domestic politics in Europe and the United States to maintain support for a war overseas. And all of this feeds into a war that is about sustainment for Russian and Ukrainian forces, as to which army can keep its units equipped, fed, and manned - all while adapting to battlefield lessons - in the bloody and grinding combat now defining the war in the Donbas. All opinions expressed here are those of the individual and do not necessarily reflect those of the Krulak Center, Marine Corps University, the United States Marine Corps, or any other agency of the U.S. Government. Dr. Konaev previously appeared on the #BruteCast to discuss urban warfare in the context of Ukraine: https://youtu.be/ytxG-7mAlWY We also discussed a recent interview with Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in which Dr. Konaev touched on these issues as well; the interview may be found here: https://www.rferl.org/a/russia-ukraine-long-war-analysis/31912134.html Intro/outro music is "Epic" from BenSound.com (https://www.bensound.com) Follow the Krulak Center: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thekrulakcenter Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thekrulakcenter/ Twitter: @TheKrulakCenter YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcIYZ84VMuP8bDw0T9K8S3g LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/brute-krulak-center-for-innovation-and-future-warfare Krulak Center homepage on The Landing: https://unum.nsin.us/kcic

Dr. Anahid Matossian, "Syria and Ukraine: A Comparative WPS Lens"

NOTE: this episode contains explicit content due to the nature of discussing vulnerable populations exploited during wars and conflict. Dr. Anahid Matossian, subject matter expert for Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) studies at Marine Corps University, joins the #BruteCast to discuss the ongoing invasion of #Ukraine from a WPS perspective in the context of her extensive experience working on similar issues - the different roles women play during conflict, post-conflict experiences, and more - within the Syrian conflict. Prior to serving as the WPS subject matter expert, Dr. Matossian worked as a Social Scientist with the Center for Advanced Operational Culture Learning (CAOCL)'s team Translational Research Group (TRG). She received her Ph.D. in Anthropology in May 2021 from the University of Kentucky, M.S. in Anthropology from Purdue University, and B.A. in Anthropology and Arabic, Armenian, Persian, Turkish, and Islamic Studies from the University of Michigan. She has 10 years of experience conducting ethnographic research with displaced women from Syria and Turkey in places from Los Angeles to Yerevan, Armenia, Berlin, and Istanbul. Originally from Michigan, Dr. Matossian grew up hearing oral history accounts from relatives about forced displacement and survival, which sparked her interest at an early age to capture and amplify these narratives for diverse audiences. Her research focuses on gender, migration, conflict, and political anthropology, and regionally on the Middle East (Syria) and South Caucasus (Armenia). She is pleased to join the MCU team and combine experiences in the field working with Syrian refugee women and her current work on Marine Corps professional military education. We discussed several humanitarian aid groups, which you can learn about below: The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR): https://www.unhcr.org/en-us/ International Committee of the Red Cross: https://www.icrc.org/en International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies: https://www.ifrc.org/ We also discussed the music video for the song "Stefania" by the Ukrainian group "Kalush Orchestra:" https://youtu.be/Z8Z51no1TD0 Intro/outro music is "Evolution" from BenSound.com (https://www.bensound.com) Follow the Krulak Center: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thekrulakcenter Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thekrulakcenter/ Twitter: @TheKrulakCenter YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcIYZ84VMuP8bDw0T9K8S3g LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/brute-krulak-center-for-innovation-and-future-warfare Krulak Center homepage on The Landing: https://unum.nsin.us/kcic

NATO's Allied Rapid Reaction Corps & the UK Fight Club

#TeamKrulak took to the road again last week, this time supporting #wargaming efforts at the Headquarters of the NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC). While we were there, we got to sit down with several of the officers at the ARRC to learn more about the ARRC's mission, how it uses #wargaming to support planning and staff professional development, and gain insights into the UK Fight Club, a grassroots organization created to support professional development among British military officers using #wargaming. We were grateful for the time shared by Maj Julian Apps, Royal Marines; Maj Edward Farren, 1st Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers; Capt Andrew Elliott, 5th Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers; and MAJ Pace Dean, United States Army in this interview! Jonathan Katz, “Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America’s Empire”

Marines know a handful of biographical points about MajGen Smedley Butler: he fought in America's "small wars," won two Medals of Honor, had the Eagle Globe and Anchor tattooed across his chest...and near the end of his life, became an antiwar activist and published a pamphlet called War is a Racket which captured his decidedly negative personal reflections on his military career. Between those biographical bookends lies an untold story of moral injury in the pursuit of American foreign policy that is not well known, but which is now told in Jonathan Katz's book Gangsters of Capitalism: Smedley Butler, the Marines, and the Making and Breaking of America's Empire. We'll be joined by the author in this #BruteCast to dig more deeply into his book and its unflinching look at a part of Marine Corps history. #TeamKrulak Non-Resident Fellow Maj Brian Kerg, USMC, recently reviewed the book in USNI's Proceedings. Jonathan Myerson Katz is the author of Gangsters of Capitalism. He received the James Foley/Medill Medal for Courage in Journalism for reporting from Haiti. His first book, The Big Truck That Went By, was shortlisted for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction and won the Overseas Press Club's Cornelius Ryan Award, the J. Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award, and the WOLA/Duke Book Award for Human Rights in Latin America. His work appears in the New York Times, Foreign Policy, and elsewhere. Katz was a New America national fellow in the Future of War program and received a fellowship from the Logan Nonfiction Program. He lives with his wife and daughter in Charlottesville, Virginia. Skip Crawley, "Guadalcanal: Seizing and Defending An Advanced Base Inside the Enemy's Defensive Perimeter"

The #BruteCast takes a look back to the Corps’ history for a case study in the seizure and defense of an advanced base. Fought between 7 August, 1942, and 9 February, 1943, the battle for Guadalcanal (Operation Watchtower) was the first allied land offensive against the Empire of Japan. With contested sea, land, and air domains, Japanese and American forces grappled with each other for advantage as American forces aimed to keep control of the “unsinkable aircraft carrier” of Guadalcanal. Timothy "Skip" Crawley, a retired Marine infantry officer, regular Marine Corps Gazette contributor, and coordinator for the Marine for Life Network, will examine the planning and execution of the island's defense, comparing the lessons learned back then to modern considerations of the Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations concept.
