Stefanos Sifandos - Confronting the Inner Child (and How to Heal it)
*SUMMARY* In this episode, I engage in an explosive chat with Relationship Expert Stefanos Sifandos who helps us understand the importance of doing the inner work on ourselves as evolving humans. In very simple practical steps, the “Relationship Alchemist” teaches us how to deal with the inner child which keeps most adults stuck in unhealthy cycles and patterns. It’s time to break free. Enjoy the listen! *SHOW NOTES* There’s a child inside every one of us which needs to be understood and worked upon for wholesome adult life. My Guest on this Episode is Stefanos Sifandos who is well-grounded in Psychology and social behavioral science. As a coach helping others navigate through life, he was faced with his most challenging client- himself. Having gone through cycles of pain in his relationships, disconnect, disharmony, constant self-isolation, anger, an unresolved trauma from childhood, complete neglect for self, and depression, he takes us through his journey and process to wholeness. In this insightful episode, we discuss the importance of doing the inner work on ourselves and rewriting our harmful patterns as evolving humans so that we can live a whole and truly fulfilling life without keeping up appearances. We delve into the issue of letting go of past trauma and abuse where Stefanos advises us to learn to Feel and not suppress emotions, Forgive the past, and break free. (Shall we call them the 3 F’s?) While addressing the issue of societal expectation wherein men are expected to suppress their emotions, he also touches on how he’s helping other men work through unresolved trauma from childhood teaching them to put their ego aside in order to fix their insecurities. Giving us very practical information, Stefanos analyses the inner child, it’s variants, and how we can address childhood issues which can manifest as different unpleasant emotions in adulthood. Very profoundly, he explains how we seek in adulthood things we didn’t experience from our primary caregivers as children, the struggle to self-regulate as adults and how it affects our relationships with others. A really outstanding point which Stefanos makes is the fact that we need to get a grasp of self-awareness and not feel ashamed to get therapy, join a group, or read self-help books as long as it helps or speaks to our struggles. He also hints on understanding our attachment styles and how we receive and give love. We stir the dark waters of porn addiction as a quick fix for insecurities and a numbing of pain that people don’t want to deal with. One thing we definitely both agree upon is the fact that individuals need to do the hard work of dealing with their unresolved issues so as to make better choices in life Interestingly, Stefanos will be hosting an INNER CHILD WORKSHOP at the end of this month as well as a retreat from 24-28th September 2020 in Austin, Texas. Courtney Friel - Surviving Addiction and a Pandemic as a News Anchor
Courtney Friel: Surviving Addiction and a Pandemic as a News Anchor Courtney Friel is news anchor, best selling author and sobriety warrior who's been in recovery for more than 10 years. I first met Courtney when I was interviewing different individuals for my book The Heart of Recovery. Courtney’s recovery journey. It was a 15 year party lifestyle for Courtney when she was working as a news anchor and reporter. Courtney had a work hard play hard identity. The parties she attended were characterised by alcohol, cocaine and pills. It was through an intervention of her husband (now ex) and other friends that she accepted getting into rehab. But before the intervention, Courtney, having already witnessed so many celebrities die from drug abuse, had already contemplated the thought of sobering up, but lacked the strength to do so. It was during the aftermath of a party she had attended in Florida where she had passed out half naked on the floor that she finally got the strength and support she needed to attend rehab. Courtney decided she deserved more than who she had become, and still had so much to give to the world. With one last drink, she said goodbye to the party life and hasn’t looked back ever since. Staying sober. The one thing that has helped Courtney in her 10 year sobriety journey is that she has a lot to draw from in life. Through meditating, journaling, yoga, church, parenting, social programs and self-help books, Courtney has enough to keep herself busy and occupied. One thing that got drilled into her belief system at the rehab program is that alcohol or substance abuse doesn’t help solve any situation. You’re only going to wake up to the same problem, only this time, feeling worse than before. The best way to fight life’s adversities is to find and practice new tools to manage the stress and anxiety. In time, these tools shape your habits and build your character. Managing job related stress. Working as a news anchor and field reporter can be very draining. For Courtney, she’s had to find ways to connect to herself and press refresh when she’s overwhelmed by sad and depressing news stories. She’s already had newsmayers and emotional hangovers related to the sad stories that she has to report. Stories that have only grown by the numbers during the current pandemic. But through her different sobriety tactics, Courtney has learnt to live in the present moment and practice gratitude for all that she’s been blessed with. Having interviewed so many people for both my book and podcast, there’s one common theme surrounding people that have gotten and stayed recovered. The theme surrounds fitness, spirituality, healthy relationships and self-awareness. Anthony ONeal - Why You Should Go to College Debt Free (And How To Do It)
Creating Generational Wealth through Financial Education Anthony ONeal is a bestselling author, speaker and financial expert who is passionate about helping people make better decisions in regards to their money and higher education in order to live a healthy and prosperous life. Anthony is also passionate about fitness, a hobby that he owes a lot of his mental strength to. Fitness has taught him the power of his mind in creating and establishing new habits. Once it’s done in the mind, the body can automatically do what’s required. Making bad choices. Growing up, Anthony only had two major conversations with his parents. How to respect the law of the land, and the religious law. His parents never gave him any serious talks or lectures about how to handle his finances. Inevitably, Anthony dived right into taking personal and student loan debts to finance a life that he couldn’t afford or need. And this would eventually cost him his college experience. His father told him that as a man, he had to live with the consequences of his choices, and wasn’t allowed to go back home. This would be the start to a 6 month adversity experience where Anthony slept in the back of his car and on the floor of his friends’ houses. Things changed when he decided to give his future some serious thought. He realised that the calibre of his future would be determined by the choices he was going to make in the present moment. He stopped pointing fingers at the people that he blamed for his misfortunes and decided to take action. Anthony made a decision to change his life completely, and travel around the world to teach young people how to avoid similar financial mistakes to his. Student crisis. $100,000 - $200,000 is the average of student loans that a lot of young adults graduate with in America. A lot of these students believe they can pay off the debt within 3 years after graduation, but studies show that 65% of them are still paying the debts off 12 years later. It’s for this reason that Anthony advocates for being wise when you pick the path to higher education. What matters isn’t where you study, but the kind of person that you are after graduating. Community colleges, Military schools and Trade schools aren’t as fancied as top colleges like Havard, but they’re still a very great way to educate yourself. Life education has different sources, ranging from online courses, working experience, and free scholarships. What’s of importance when deciding your future is examining the best route that you can take according to your personality, and use it to grow and earn profits. Financial Education. Racial wealth gap based on a recent study shows that for every $100 that a white caucasian owns, the average African American has $5.48 . Although there’s a lot of factors contributing to this, Anthony pinpoints mindset to why other races lag behind others. What you should focus on is controlling what you can, and doing the most with the little income that you have. Learn to live below your income and educate your siblings, friends and relatives on the importance of financial discipline in everyday life. Sal Di Stefano - Building a Business Based on Integrity and Teamwork
Building a Business Based on Integrity and Teamwork Sal Di Stefano is one of the three podcast hosts of the highly acclaimed Mind Pump Podcast. They sell workout programs to their clients through the Mind Pump Media brand. Sal’s bio As he was getting into high school, Sal had a frail, slim body which sprouted a lot of insecurities in him. Always solution oriented, Sal had a growth mindset that pushed him into working out as a way to change his physique. Exercise has ever since been the gateway and foundation to Sal’s personal growth journey. With exercise, the results are always black and white. If you put in the work on a consistent basis, then you’ll see the results for yourself. Having grown up as a child of 2 Sicilian immigrants, Sal through his parents learnt what it means to be hardworking and honest. He grew up responsible and passionate about helping people because he always took care of his three younger siblings. Fitness training. When he started out, Sal was mostly focused on how he can best build his business and make profit. This made him push his clients to work with him more if they needed results. After digging in deep and finding the reason why he got into fitness training, Sal changed his business model. He decided that it was more honest if he helped people become a better version of themselves with or without his help. He then pivoted to training his clients into adapting a fitness lifestyle that helped them make a habit out of exercise. For Sal, it's important to train and coach your clients with the truth. Effective training methods that help your clients in the long term are better than intense exercise models that only help them in the short term. Mind Pump Sal While working as a fitness trainer, Doug (who is now a producer of the Mind Pump Podcast) was recommended to him by a chiropractor because of a back problem. As an effective communicator, Sal was able to convince Doug into a healthy training model in contrast to Doug’s suggestions (Suggestions Doug had picked up from tabloid training media platforms) 6 months into the training and Doug’s back was not only healed, but Doug was also lifting twice his weight at the gym. Doug loved Sal’s effective communication skills that he suggested online selling for his gym products. Sal, motivated by a New England Journal of Medicine article he had recently read, was able to draft Maps Anabolic - a work out program that he intended to sell online. Before launching the program, Sal reached out to Adam (A first rising fitness trainer whose reputation had crossed Sal more than a couple of times). Adam was more than impressed by the new Maps Anabolic program, and was interested to be a part of it. The trio (Sal, Adam and Doug) then met at Adam’s house and planned to launch a podcast as a way to build an audience and establish authority. Mind Pump Podcast was a total success. They produced 5 episodes a week for a full year and built so much value and authority that Maps Anabolic’s launch needed very little marketing. Teamwork. The trio are great innovators and always coming up with new ideas every time they’re together. This has proven to be a challenge as they have to be able to say no to some great ideas in order to focus and grow on one idea at a time. The creativity and innovation of the trio is coupled with a lot of debate and arguments. But the one thing that always holds them together and makes them stronger is support for each other. They back whichever idea has been opted by the majority and support it till the end. Even if the idea ends up failing, they encourage each other and move forward together as a team. This chemistry has been the backbone of their friendship, business and podcast. DM Sal on instagram to get a promo code and pay half for any of his workout programs. Bizzie Gold - How to Break Free From Your Past For Good
How to Break Free From Your Past For Good Joining me on the show today is Bizzie Gold. Labeled the millennial voice of personal development, Bizzie’s efforts are towards changing our cultural view on mental health and helping people rewire their thinking to become the best version of themselves. Bizzie has featured on major mainstream media platforms to discuss her unique and sustainable approach to mental health. She’s been praised globally for the swift breakthroughs she helps her clients achieve during their healing journey. Bizzie’s life journey. How you handle adversity, according to Bizzie, comes down to how you were raised by your parents. Bizzie’s parents were ever positive and taught her to never be afraid of expressing herself and what she thought. They raised her to be a self-reflective and a confident go-getter in life. For this reason, Bizzie has always believed in her skills and what she is capable of accomplishing. In fact this mindset has been the key to her success. Every time she’s faced with a problem, Bizzie is at her mental best and drafts the best ideas and solutions to what she’s going through. She has learned and mastered the art of staying calm and thinking clear when she’s in the eye of a storm. She yearns for obstacles, as they help her dig deep and find the best version of herself. Buti Yoga. With approximately 6,000 instructors in 35 countries, Buti yoga is a global brand that Bizzie uses to spread her mental, physical and spiritual healing techniques. Buti Yoga, comes from an Indian Rothi word which means something that’s hidden away or kept secret. In our consumer driven society, a lot of people are obsessed with finding some kind of trick, cure or gadgets to improve the quality of their lives. However, the simple truth is that tapping in and resolving what’s inside us is the key to a better and sustainable lifestyle. Only deep self discovery can ignite the flame of bringing permanent change and habits in your daily life. In Buti Yoga, Bizzie teaches people how to take a full grasp of what’s happening in their bodies as they’re progressing and use it to fuel their healing journey. Breaking the victim mentality. A lot of therapy models have sprouted up over the years. Bizzie’s model works on the basis of tapping into the subconscious traumatic patterns and starting the healing process from there. Bizzie helps her patients learn how to catch their intrusive thoughts when they occur and restructure them in order to build a final layer to completely change who they are, all while still being their authentic selves. A lot of our subconscious brain patterns are anchored between the age of 2-5 years. That’s the reason why so many people are stuck in a loop of blaming their personality as the reason why they act or react in a certain way. ‘I’m an angry person, it’s just the way I am’ Such people respond on autopilot rather instead of responding to a situation based on their current environment and stimuli. In her break therapy method, Bizzie helps her clients take a deep dive into their personality and find the actions that trigger the subconscious pattern of judging the current situation through the lens of the past. Structured container Part of Bizzie’s healing therapy module is creating a highly structured environment with different tools that force her patients to get triggered and react. Bizzie then measures how you respond to the different triggers . Once the reactions are measured. Bizzie teaches her patients how to map out and understand themselves better through the emotional trigger and reaction that occurred. What makes this method so effective is that all the different tools used in the structured environment make sure that you’re honest not just with the facilitator, but your inner self too. And no matter what, the end result is always the same. You come out knowing everything about yourself, including the truth that you’re not comfortable to address. Owning up and taking full responsibility is also part of the healing process. Because a lot of people are comfortably addicted to the victim mentality and only point fingers to explain who did them wrong. By learning to break your emotional response under different environments, you can learn how to shift your perspectives and reflect on the facts before reacting to a trigger. Bizzie, through the Eli Model teaches her patients how to interrupt their emotional response system with logic. This stops the flow of neuro-transmitters. Once this happens her patients can then tap into their logic and intuition in order to make a decision based on their current environment. A lot of people try to run away or avoid their triggers. The truth is, you can never grow or learn to rewire your responses by hiding from your triggers. The only solution to this is creating a solid plan and structure where you can rapidly trigger and repattern yourself. Connor Beaton - Winning Your Battles Through Facing Your Shadow
Connor Beaton: Winning your battles through facing your shadow I’m pleased to host Connor Beaton as today’s special guest on the show. Connor is a male relationship and mindset coach. Alongside his wife, Vienna Pharoan, Connor has been making a positive impact in the lives of many couples throughout the world. The current pandemic that we’ve found ourselves in as a result of covid 19 has undoubtedly caused havoc in many relationships. Relationships not just with our partners, but ourselves too. Connor helps us unravel why so many individuals are having a hard time right now and how we can use the power of self-awareness and conflict management to live a better life with ourselves, and other people. Facing your shadow. Our mind consists of three parts. The conscious, subconscious, and unconscious mind. Also referred to as the Hurt Locker, The Shadow is the part of our mind where we lock up all the past events of our lives that we don’t like. The shadow is part of the unconscious mind, and it’s where we store our insecurities and things that we tend to avoid or hide from the world. What’s interesting about the Shadow, is that it’s not only the place where we store our painful past experiences but also where we lock up a lot of our potential too. For example, imagine a small boy who has an abusive parent who constantly tells him that he’s stupid or not smart enough. This will have a psychological impact on the child. The child will not only adopt a personal story of not being smart enough, but he’s also going to take part of the potential of who he can be and lock it away in the unconscious mind. It’s only through facing these past demons and shadows, that we allow ourselves to move into a space where we are psychologically complete. Why men need more of shadow facing We all have moments where life showers challenges in our lives. And this has a major impact on men than it does on women. As a result of cultural pressure from fellow men and society, a lot of men have adopted a natural philosophy of handling problems in isolation, without seeking help or guidance from anyone. We’ve been taught as men that our highest value is in our ability to perform and solely find solutions to problems. Connor’s rock bottom. Growing up Connor lacked a sense of self-worth. He wasn’t very sharp in academics, he was average in sports, but excelled when it came to women. With time, Connor built a sense of self worth around the attention that he got from women. This turned him into a womanizer and an infidel partner who casually slept with other women for fun. All of this took a turn when Connor’s partner found out about his cheating ways after finding him with another woman. It was at this moment that Connor fully realized the impact of his actions. Having led a double life of hiding the truth and only showing what a happy and successful life he was living; Connor was too ashamed to face the world. And so, he took all of his shame and guilt and stored it in his shadow. This went on for a few weeks up until Connor got to his breaking point. He was living at the back of his car; sad, lonely, and depressed. That is when he decided to reach out to his friend and ask for support; leading to a self-discovery journey of facing his shadow. Through the process, Connor was able to focus on his insecurities and the part of him that was constantly seeking validation from women in order to be happy. The part of him that was using sex and porn as a distraction to get through his days and get through life. The time is never right to make a change. The narratives that we tell ourselves about our lives are very important, as they dictate the trajectory that we’re going in life. After working with men, women and couples for close to a decade now. Connor has noted that so many people believe change won’t happen unless we hit rock bottom. Unless we’re completely destroyed. A lot of individuals live under the mentality that growth can’t happen in a consistent and substantial way unless we’re bartered, beat and broken. In contrast to this belief we actually tend to hide our feelings and escape from reality when we feel pain, suffering, or insecurities. Our brains have been naturally designed to resist change because it can’t predict the outcome that will result from the change. And just like in Ryan Holiday’s book The Obstacle Is The Way, we should learn to accept and live by the universal truth that facing our challenges, especially when we least feel like it, is when we absolutely need to do it. Dark and Light Motivation There are two types of motivation. Dark motivation is fuelled by shame or the belief that we are not good enough. And most people build their lives, businesses, relationships and families based on this motivation. The sad truth is that this motivation will wear out with time. Light motivation on the other hand is a result of us moving into and facing the darkness in our lives. Even though we’re naturally designed to run away from troubles and challenges, light motivation is about facing your inner critic and conquering it. It’s at this moment we realize that true freedom can only come when we decide to face what we’ve desperately been trying to escape from. Handling the stress and conflict that’s a result of the current pandemic. How you’re acting right now to cope with your troubles, is an amplification of what you normally do when faced with the unknown or things that are out of your control. Right now is the perfect time to lean into the discomfort you’re feeling and do the things you normally wouldn’t do in order to change your lifestyle for the better. A lot of relationship routines have been destroyed by the covid pandemic. These routines are normally what hold the continuity of connection and communication in relationships. So if you’re having a hard time with your partner, don’t worry, you’re not the only one. So many people are experiencing the same globally. To help manage this, you can; Create a personal routine that helps you build intimacy with yourself Create a couple routine that helps you build intimacy with your partner Since conflicts are a normal part of any relationship, you can do the following to build a great conflict management system with your partner. Know your personal relationship towards conflict. Get familiar with how you react in a moment of conflict. We all react differently to conflicts in relation to our character and personality. Label your reaction, eg. I get too angry or manipulative during a conflict. This will help you set boundaries with yourself and your partner. This way, you’ll know when to take a pause when either one of you is at their most reactive during a conflict. Once you’ve taken a pause, you can regulate yourself to solid ground as you wait for your partner to do the same (or reach out if they’ve already cooled off) All couples have conflicts, but the best couples are the ones that can navigate through conflict and find a way to turn it into a connection. Nick Santonastasso - How to Build an Unbreakable Mindset
How to Build an Unbreakable Mindset Joining me on the show today is Nick Santonastasso. Nick is a global keynote speaker and fitness model. What’s so incredible about his story is he kept pushing on despite having so many reasons to give up. Born with no legs and an arm, Nick had to fight through depression and suicidal thoughts growing up. With all odds against him, Nick developed a razor sharp mindset to become the success and inspiration he is today. The Foundation of Nick’s success. Nick owes it all to his parents. They are his superheroes. As a parent, you cultivate and mould your child’s mindset through your actions and words. While growing up as a kid, Nick’s parents never treated him any different. They treated him as a normal kid and handed him tasks that they would a normal kid. It is from his childhood that Nick developed the solution oriented mindset. Everytime his parents placed him in a situation that made him uncomfortable, Nick used it as an opportunity to grow both physically and mentally. Nick’s journey. Back in high school, Nick used to be a popular prankster. He’d dress up like a zombie and scare people. After finishing high school, Nick turned down the offer to attend college and instead chose to pursue a career in acting. And so he moved to LA. Two weeks after signing his first lease, the show he was supposed to perform in got cancelled. He didn’t even get the opportunity to film the pilot episode. As time went by, Nick found himself broke, with no money to pay rent or buy food. (Looking back at it now, Nick appreciates this lowpoint in his life. Till date, he still believes he can survive even when he lacks a penny in his name.) This forced him to move back home and live in his parents’ basement. With his pranking career down the drain, Nick decided to shift his focus on body building as his next life project. He analyzed the fitness industry and created a masterplan to use his unique body features to build a career as a bodybuilder. He would leverage what he had to entertain and motivate people. With this vision in mind. Nick pushed himself to the limit and this led to him being the success he is today. How Nick uses his mind as a tool to achieve success. For Nick, it’s all about focus and where you place it. Don’t place your focus on things you can’t control or the bad things going on in your life. Instead, you should place it on the positive things happening for you, and how to find solutions for the problems in your life. Work on yourself. A lot of people try to seek validation from other individuals in their lives such as parents, peers and work colleagues. Nick advises you to instead seek acceptance and validation from yourself. And the best way to do this, is to invest in yourself. When you work on yourself, you create clarity and momentum in your life. You are able to live based on your purpose and end up falling in love with yourself. Nick worked on himself through bodybuilding. Working out gave him confidence, upon which Nick has built his entire life and career. Seed planting and persistence. When his bodybuilding career was peeking. Nick decided to attend a mastermind course. It's here that he met his business partner and coach, Ratmir. Inspired by Nick’s story, Ratmir offered to work for Nick for free. Ratmir promised to build Nick a successful career as a public speaker. With the new journey onset, the duo used all the little chances and resources they could find to build Nick’s PR profile. Every event the duo attended, they would plant seeds in the form of networking and consistently communicating with the top speakers and VIP guests of the shows. Nick would give talks without asking for pay. Just to build his profile. With time, they were able to leverage the different relationships they had built through the years and Nick found himself sharing the stage with icons such as Tony Robbins and Tom Bilyeu. This served to boost Nick’s fast rising career as speaker. But even after accomplishing so much and establishing himself as a renowned speaker. Nick still does events for free. As a core principle in his life, Nick believes in doing the same things that you did when you were starting out that got you to where you are. Never derail from your foundation. Hang on to the principles that propelled you to success. Connect with Nick Santonastasso.
