Kelly Corrigan on Why You Must Listen More and Ask Better Questions To Build an Unbreakable Connection With Your Kids (Or Anyone Else)
Today’s guest is Kelly Corrigan. Kelly has written four New York Times bestselling memoirs in the last decade, earning her the title of “The Poet Laureate of the ordinary” from the Huffington Post and the “voice of a generation” from O Magazine. She is also the host of the highly popular podcast, Kelly Corrigan Wonders as well as the PBS hit show “Tell Me More” where she has interviewed people such as Jennifer Garner and James Corden. Kelly recently gave a commencement speech to the 2021 graduates of the Walker School where she shared some life-changing wisdom on the importance of human connection. Here is a quote from her speech that I think you will appreciate helping set the tone for the convo today… “Great lives are made up of a series of great days. And great days are made up of a series of great connections.” Our discussion today centers around just that. We talk about the unbreakable bond that she had with her late father “Greenie,” how it was built, why it was so special, and some tips on how it could be replicated. Kelly also shares why listening more and asking better questions is the secret sauce to building deeper connections and how you can apply it to specific types of relationships. We get into parenting and how to effectively communicate with your kids so that they feel safe, validated and connected. Kelly also chats about how she has healed from many painful moments in her life and some wisdom her Dad left behind that helps get her through tough times. Essentially this chat is about love. It’s about connection. It’s about humility. It’s about taking the focus off of yourself and putting it onto others so that you can live a life full of joy, fulfillment, and happiness. Light Watkins on How to Easily Meditate, Trust Your Intuition and Embrace Discomfort
Today’s guest is Light Watkins. Light is an author, thought leader, speaker and podcast host. But he is perhaps most recognized for being one of the world’s leading meditation experts. I initially heard of his work from one of my best friends, Billy Delorbe. Throughout the years, Light has continued to challenge himself with endeavors such as embracing minimalism as well as nomadic living. He launched a podcast called “At The End Of The Tunnel” and penned yet another book “Knowing Where to Look,” which was released a little over a month ago. Today’s chat essentially covers it all. Light and I discuss what inspired his meditation journey as well as his advice for those looking to start. We get into how to connect to and trust your intuition. Light shares the ins and outs of nomadic living and simple tips for someone who is looking to try it out. Josh Clemente on Why You Should Monitor Your Blood Sugar Even If You Aren't Diabetic
Today’s guest is Josh Clemente. Josh is the co-founder of Levels, which is the first consumer program that lets an individual know how food and lifestyle choices are directly affecting blood sugar and metabolic health, in real-time. They pair glucose monitoring with intelligent software to support healthy blood sugar levels. Some early users have included professional athletes, biohackers, the weight loss community and other health enthusiasts. This chat serves as a great follow-up to the convo I had with Cyrus Khambatta on the pod not too long ago where we dove deep into the topics of insulin resistance and diabetes. I definitely invite you to check that episode out if you missed it. The dialogue today with Josh certainly will touch on these subjects, but we spend quite a bit of time chatting about the incredible technology he has helped to create and the data that has come from it. Josh is also a mechanical engineer and CrossFit-L2 trainer. At SpaceX, he led a team to develop life support systems that in May of 2020 began sustaining astronauts on trips to and from the International Space Station aboard Crew Dragon: the first human-rated commercial spacecraft in history. In our conversation, Josh walks you through his “adversity advantage” story and share why he decided to leave working for SpaceX after experiencing a health scare of his own that led him down a path of self-discovery that changed his life and inspired him to co-found Levels. Josh shares the benefits of using a continuous glucose monitor and how it can help shift the way we treat metabolic health issues. We talk about how certain foods affect insulin and how some widely promoted health foods can actually negatively impact blood sugar levels. Josh talks about how exercise impacts your metabolic health and flexibility and how certain types of exercise impact blood glucose levels. Our discussion also dovetails into sleep and stress and how they all play into this equation and what you can do to use them to your advantage. Levels is currently in “beta” and not available to the public. But, Josh has created a special page for y’all if you want to bypass the 115k + waitlist and purchase one now. Adam "Smiley" Poswolsky on How to Create Connection and Rebuild Relationships in an Age of Loneliness and Isolation
How to Create Connection and Rebuild relationships in an Age of Loneliness and Isolation!!!! One of the hardest things about these last 15 months or so has been the inability for many to see loved ones, friends and co-workers in person. Things like loss of connection and feelings of loneliness and isolation have caused so much havoc on the health of so many people and social media and technology have quickly risen to take the place of these interpersonal connections which isn’t the greatest alternative. While the pandemic could be the easy thing to blame for these issues, I am afraid they started long before. It has been reported that the average American hasn’t made a new friend in 5 years which is disheartening. I think by now we all know the benefits of deep personal connections and relationships. Studies show that they help us live longer, feel better and improve our health. With that said, I couldn’t think of a better time to talk about this topic. Meet today’s guest and connection guru Adam Smiley Poswolsky. Smiley is a millennial workplace expert, motivational speaker, and author. He helps companies attract, retain, and empower millennial talent, and has inspired thousands of professionals to be more engaged at work. He has a Ted talk that has been viewed more than 1.5 million times, and has spoken in 20 countries about millennials, multigenerational engagement, and fostering connection and belonging in the workplace. His latest book FRIENDSHIP IN THE AGE OF LONELINESS: AN OPTIMIST’S GUIDE TO CONNECTION essentially gives the readers simple and effective habits for starting new relationships and strengthening existing ones which will be the focus of our discussion in this episode. And today’s conversation is going to educate you on what’s at the root cause of these feelings of loneliness and isolation while ultimately giving you the blueprint and the tools needed to create connections and rebuild relationships so that you can live a happier, healthier, and longer life. Kate Cohen and Alexander Vesely-Frankl on Why Kids Are Struggling With Their Mental Health (And What We Can Do About It)
Today’s conversation is going to hit home with so many because we are talking about kids. We are going to discuss mental health issues among children and adolescents. According to a recent CDC report, ER visits for suspected suicide attempts were up 50% among teenage girls in the winter months of 2021 as compared to the same time frame in 2019. The CDC also reported that suicide was the 2nd leading cause of death in 2019 for people between the ages 10-34. It’s absolutely frightening. Rates of depression, anxiety, addiction, and prescription medications have also soared. What’s the answer? What needs to change? What can be done? While we all wish we could just wave a magic wand and cure this horrific epidemic, it’s clearly not that simple. With that said, a great first step is raising awareness which is what my two guests today are doing. Meet Kate Cohen and Alexander Vesely-Frankl. Kate is a producer and co-founder of Straight Up Films which she started with Marisa Polvino in 2008. Kate has worked with many A-List celebrities including Johnny Depp, Natalie Portman, and Morgan Freeman. Their latest endeavor, Straight Up Impact which Kate and Marisa started along with Pam Roy is on a mission to create commercial films that inspire audiences to enact social change. This includes “Man’s Search for Meaning,” a film adaptation of the highly popular memoir by Viktor Frankl. Tony Robbins and screenwriter Angela Workman are involved in the making of the film as is Alexander Vesely-Frankl a licensed psychotherapist and the grandson of the late Viktor Frankl. Alexander has also collaborated with Straight Up Impact to help create a compelling short film series entitled “Meaning in Madness” addressing the root causes of the current mental health crisis among our youth. We will be discussing two of these films today, one of which is called “Mackenzie” chronicling the real-life experiences of a 17-year-old high school student as she struggles to perform well in a demanding school while privately coping with depression. We also chat about their other film “Luna,” follows a 15-year-old girl who shares her experience growing up on prescribed psychiatric medication since she was 8 years old. Today we cover it all. We talk about what brought Alexander and Kate together to do this and discuss the premise and mission of their current projects. We have an in-depth discussion about what is causing the massive spike of the mental health issues of kids and the role that the school system, expectations, environment and performance-based metrics are playing. We get into what the school system could do differently, why it needs an overhaul, and how parents can know if their child is struggling. They share how Viktor Frankl’s pioneering therapeutic approach could help and why having “meaning” and “purpose” is crucial for thriving at any point in life. Our convo also gets into prescription medication and how it’s affecting the health of the youth. Topics discussed: What brought Kate and Alexander together to do these projects? What's the main mission behind their films? What are the issues that are causing the spike of kids struggling with their mental health? How can people give the message to kids in a way that they can relate to and understand, so that it's on their level, and they're inspired to change their perspective and take some action for the positive? If given a chance, what’s something that Kate and Alexander would add to the school system How meaningful is stress? What would Kate or Alex tell people about their film, the premise of it, what it's about, and what they can expect to get from it What advice can Kate give to parents so they could see the signs if a kid is struggling The importance of acceptance What could the school system do differently? Luke Storey on Addiction, Sobriety, Plant Medicine and Healing Trauma
Luke Storey is the host of the highly popular The Life Stylist Podcast. He is also a writer and meditation/metaphysics teacher whose passion revolves around the topics of health, addiction, recovery and spirituality. Today Luke is a thought leader in the health and wellness space. But this wasn’t always the case. His history involves not only healing and recovery but also tremendous pain, trauma and addiction. His crippling addictions to multiple drugs including heroin and crack led him to living in a transient apartment building in Los Angeles self medicating with alcohol to handle the opiate withdrawal. It was also here that he decided to ask for help and change his life. Even though this moment was over 24 years ago and his life is dramatically different today, he still remembers those dark times vividly. Luke began using drugs when he was 8 or 9 years old as a way to escape from an unstable and abusive childhood. With hopes of being a famous rockstar, Luke found himself in Hollywood in the drug fueled music scene. His addictions and the progression of his self hatred eventually caught up with him leading him to the rock bottom moment I described earlier. One phone call led to Luke going to treatment and turning his life around. His redemption story has been driven by health, wellness, spirituality and courage. This along with Luke’s desire for self discovery and hunger for learning has led him to where he is today. Our conversation today unpacks Luke’s healing journey. We talk about why he used, how he made it out and the things he has struggled with in his recovery. He opens up about his experience with plant medicine and why it has been so helpful for him despite its controversial status in the recovery community.
