Meet Danu, a Beautiful Osprey at the Cascades Raptor Center
Mountain Rose Herbs sponsors five rescued raptors at the Cascades Raptor Center in Eugene, Oregon. We spent a morning recently visiting with one of them: Danu, a stunning osprey. The osprey's diet of live fish and, particularly, its ability to dive into water to catch them, is unique among North American raptors. Danu was one of two hatchlings rescued in June of 2011. We had such a wonderful day visiting with this beautiful raptor. You can see the original video of our visit with Danu on our YouTube channel. Join our community! Meet Guapo, a Swainson's Hawk at the Cascades Raptor Center
Mountain Rose Herbs sponsors five rescued raptors at the Cascade Raptor Center in Eugene, Oregon. We spent an afternoon recently visiting with one of them: Guapo, a handsome Swainson's hawk. This beautiful raptor was such a joy to spend time with! Swainson's hawks are large, slender natives of the western plains. They are close in size and shape to our more common Red-tailed hawks, but have longer, narrower, more pointed wings, and a smaller bill and feet. We apologize for the chainsaw noise in the background for the first few minutes! You can see the original video of our visit with Guapo on our YouTube channel. Join our community! Cultivating and Caretaking the Ecosystems We Call Home with Sam Thayer
This episode was recorded at the event ‘Planting the Future: Medicinal Plant Conservation in the Driftless Region’ hosted by United Plant Savers on August 12, 2017 in Wisconsin. Beyond, sustainable harvest, we look at the long-term future of our landscape, and the special role that plant gatherers have in maintaining its ecology and prosperity. We'll talk about the threats and historical changes to our ecosystems, and discuss strategies to work and grow past them. We can do more than just "reduce our impact"—we can be a positive force to create and maintain vibrant and diverse communities of native plants that are at once productive for us and a paradise for wildlife. Nurturing the land that nurtures us. The Driftless Area will be used as an example for ecological and management concepts that apply everywhere. We'll explore some traditional, mutually beneficial relationships between Native peoples and the plants that support them, and discuss practical techniques for implementing this kind of harmony on our own sacred gathering grounds.
