Hawk Keeps People Safe from Pigeon Poo
Hey students, do you know what animal this is?

You see them a lot in parks. Some people like to feed them. Pigeons are okay on the ground. But the trouble with pigeons is that they fly. And when they fly… That's right, they poo! And sometimes that poo lands on people's heads. Yuck!

In San Francisco, pigeons poo a lot on people. That's why, in San Francisco, they decided to do something about it.
They got a man to bring his hawk! The man and his hawk go to a subway station in San Francisco three days a week.
在舊金山,有一個人每一個禮拜有三天,會帶他的老鷹去地鐵站。
Pigeons are afraid of hawks. They think hawks will eat them. So, when they see a hawk, they get scared and fly away!
鴿子怕老鷹,就會飛走!
The hawk's name is Pac-Man. His owner gives Pac-Man lots of food and treats, so Pac-Man doesn't eat the pigeons, he just scares them away.
這隻老鷹叫 Pac-Man,牠的主人給牠很多食物,所以牠不會吃鴿子。
Because of that, he isn't hungry, so he doesn't need to eat the pigeons. But he still scares them away. Which is much better! Nobody likes to get pigeon poo on their head!

This Tool Helps People Sing Better
Do you kids like to sing? Some people can sing well. Others sing like this. For bad singers, there is now help!
A company in Japan made a special device. This device can help people sing better.
日本的公司做了一個裝置,讓人唱歌更好聽。
It's small and you put it in your mouth. It looks like that thing parents give babies to suck on, to stop them from crying.
它要放在嘴巴裡面,有一點像奶嘴。
People who want to sing better use this device for three minutes every day. They just put it in their mouth and do other things for three minutes.
只要每天放在嘴巴裡三分鐘就可以了。
How does it work? Well, the top of your mouth has a hard part and a soft part. Try this: put your tongue at the top of your mouth. At the front, there is a hard part. At the back, there is a soft part.
怎麼做到的呢?我們的嘴巴上面有一個硬硬的跟一個軟軟的地方。
The soft part of your mouth naturally goes up when you sing or yawn. This device pushes the soft part of your mouth up.

Green Iguanas Invade Pingtung
I'm in Pingtung today! It's sunny and… Wow! What is that? It's a Green Iguana!
是一隻綠鬣蜥耶!

Listen, I like iguanas, but they are not supposed to live in Taiwan.
These kinds of iguanas live in South America, and it's never a good idea to take animals to a place where they don't come from.

These iguanas in Taiwan are invaders!
牠們是入侵者! It's true!
Someone probably brought baby iguanas to Taiwan to be pets, but then the iguanas grew up and became super big lizards!
一開始應該有人把牠當寵物養,但是牠長大以後變成太大隻了!
Some owners said "Aiyah! This iguana is huge! It's scary!" So they let them go out into the wild.
然後牠的主人有可能覺得「怎麼這麼大!好可怕!」,就把牠丟到野外。
The iguanas like Pingtung because it's hot and sunny. But the iguanas are bad for the environment in Pingtung. They are hungry eaters!

The farmers won't be able to make money if iguanas keep eating their fruit and veggies.

New Doll Has a Hearing Aid
We use our ears to hear many things, like music, animals, and of course, talking.
But many people cannot hear. So how do they talk with other people?
耳朵聽不見的人,要怎麼跟別人溝通呢?
One way is with sign language. People can use their hands to talk! For example, they can touch their mouth to say thank you. They can wave their hand to say goodbye. This is called "sign language".
其中一種方法是用手語!譬如說,用手碰嘴巴代表謝謝,揮手可以代表再見。
In fact, today is International Day of Sign Languages!
今天是國際手語日!
You can try it too. Put your hands on your heart. Do you know what this means? This means "love".
把你的手放在心上,意思就是「愛」。
Another way people can hear is with a hearing aid. This is a machine people put in their ears to help them hear. Many people use one.
另一種方法是用助聽器。
Now there is even a doll with a hearing aid! This doll was made to show kids that it is okay to use a hearing aid.

California Says No to Gas Cars
Today is World Car Free Day! It's a time when some people stop driving their cars for a whole day.
今天是世界無車日!
Cars make a lot of pollution. There are lots of other ways to stop cars from making so much pollution. Like in California… they want to stop selling gas cars by 2035.
汽車製造了很多污染。美國加州想從2035年以後不賣燃油車了。
California won't stop selling all cars. They will just stop selling cars that use gas, which make lots of pollution. They will still sell cars that use electricity, of course.
不是所有車都不賣了,他們還會賣電動車。
Other states in America also want to ban the sale of gas cars. This means the air in these places will be cleaner.
美國有一些地方也想要不賣燃油車,這樣空氣會比較乾淨。
And now, Taiwan says it wants to ban the sale of gas cars too! Wow! That's great. Taiwan won't stop selling them as soon as California, though. Taiwan plans to stop selling gas cars by 2040. That's five years later than California.

Very Old Forest Found
Do you like walking in the forest? It's so peaceful. Today, I'm going to tell you about a very special forest. It's special because it is really old. It is so old that it is ancient.
有一個很特別的森林,超級古老!
But that is not the only reason the forest is special. It's special because it is at the bottom of a sinkhole.
他特別的是,在一個天坑底部被發現!"Sinkhole" 就是天坑。
A sinkhole is a big hole in the ground. This big hole happens when the ground is weak. The ground quickly falls down. This hole is called a sinkhole.
如果土地很脆弱,地面就會塌下去,變成天坑。
People found a sinkhole in China with an ancient forest in it. They had to climb down hundreds of meters. Once they got to the bottom of the sinkhole, they found the forest.

It was hard for them to go through the forest because there were so many plants and trees there. Some trees were 40 meters tall! Forty meters… that's really tall.

World's First Poisonous Bird Discovered
Hey students! Let me ask you a question. Have you ever heard of a poisonous bird?
你們有聽過有毒的鳥嗎?
It's a small orange and black bird. It lives in a country called Papua New Guinea.
這種鳥小小的,有黑色跟橘色的毛,住在一個叫做巴布亞紐幾內亞的國家。
Papua New Guinea is on a big island, near Australia. But it's still much bigger than Taiwan.
There's an interesting story about how the bird was discovered. A scientist was trying to catch another kind of bird. He put nets in trees to catch the bird. But he got the poisonous orange and black bird instead.
這一隻鳥是怎麼被發現的呢?科學家本來要抓另外一種鳥,結果抓到這一隻有毒的鳥。
How did he know the bird was poisonous? He tried to get the bird out of the net. When he did that, it bit and scratched his fingers. Ouch!
當他要把這一隻鳥從網子抓出來時,他被咬又被抓傷。
Then, the scientist put his fingers to his mouth to lick his hand-the same hand that he had just grab the bird with.
Later, his mouth burned and felt numb. That's how he found out the bird was poisonous.
科學家把受了傷的手放進嘴巴舔,結果嘴巴變得麻麻燙燙的。
Luckily, the bird wasn't very poisonous, so he wasn't hurt badly.
幸好這隻鳥沒有很毒,他才沒有怎樣。

A Short Walk Can Keep You Healthy
What do you usually do after you eat? Sit down and read a book? Or maybe you take a short nap.
Well guess what? Doctors say taking a short walk after eating helps your body control your blood sugar.

When most people think about sugar, they think about candy or ice cream or cake. Sweet things have lots of sugar in them, right?
Well, actually, many foods have sugar in them. There is sugar in milk, in tomatoes, in carrots, and even in onions!

Sugar from food gives us energy. We need sugar. But too much sugar can be bad for our blood.

Keeping Taiwan's Coastline Clean
The last time I was at this beach, it was covered in garbage! There was so much garbage I couldn't even walk along the water.
上ㄧ次來海邊,有好多垃圾!這一次好多了。
There were glass bottles, old boxes, and a lot of plastic garbage. Those are not things that should be on a beach.
上一次來這裡,有玻璃瓶、舊的箱子,還有很多塑膠垃圾。
Some experts say as much as 150,000 bags of garbage can be found on Taiwan's coastlines every year.
That is about 650 tons worth of garbage. Do you know how much 650 tons weighs? That's the weight of about 160 full grown Asian elephants!
每一年在台灣的海邊會找出十五萬袋的垃圾,有六百五十噸。
That's why it is so important for people to volunteer to clean all the garbage up! If we don't help keep our coastlines clean, we won't be able to go to the beach and play in the water.

Greenpeace Finds Plastics in Animal Poop
Nature is so beautiful. I love hiking through the mountains of Taiwan.
Ew! But it is not nice when I see garbage in nature.

According to Greenpeace, who are a very large environmental organization, all this plastic is ending up inside animals' bodies!
綠色和平組織說,有很多塑膠到最後進了動物身體裡!
Greenpeace knows this because they are finding microplastics in animal poop!
他們在動物的便便裡面找到微塑膠!
Microplastics are very, very, very tiny pieces of plastic. When experts from Greenpeace studied some wild animals in Taiwan, they found a lot of microplastics in their poop!
This means animals are eating the plastic, or they are eating other animals that ate the plastic.
微塑膠是超級超級小的塑膠。動物吃掉塑膠後,便便裡面就會有微塑膠。
