View Finders Photography Podcast

Wendy Bagnall is a landscape photographer based the south of England who's work was recently shown at the 2022 Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition. Wendy’s work is unrestricted and playful and she uses different techniques to interpret the landscape, creating images that to evoke an emotional connection with the viewer. Wendy got her first camera as a child but she went deeper into her photography during the pandemic when forced isolation gave her the opportunity to build a relationship with the landscape in her local area and fast-tracked her development as a photographer.Wendy is one of my favourite landscape photographers right now and this is definitely one of my favourite conversations I’ve had on the podcast. Kristy Ashton is a portrait photographer who was born in Australia but now lives and works in Scotland. Kristy's great great great grandfather was George Washington Wilson, one of the pioneers of outdoor photography who photographed Queen Victoria and John Brown in 1863 - so her connection to photography and to Scotland runs deep. Kristy’s unique style is a culmination of a number of ingredients from her personal journey - an innate sense of creativity, a romantic dream of scotland and a love of renaissance painters resulting in images that are somehow otherworldly and completely authentic all at the same time. Ulla Lohmann is a documentary photographer and film maker from Lake Starnberg, Germany who regularly works for magazines and broadcasters, including National Geographic, GEO, BBC, Red Bull Media House and Stern View. Ulla has published a coffee-table book about the Dolomite Mountains for National Geographic and a text book about realizing her dreams. She is ambassador for Canon, Eizo, Manfrotto and F-Stop. She is an elected member of the German Photographic Society and she has been appointed as a fellow of the Explorer’s Club in New York. Ulla also conducts workshops and photograohy  expeditions to active volcano sites around the world A child of 2 teachers, her imagination and curiosity were always encouraged and when she won a national science competition as a teenager, she used the winnings to fund her first trip around the world - and she’s never looked back. Her dream, to descend into heart of an active volcano, was inspired by reading Jules Verne as a child and her film Spitting Distance, which follows the fulfilment of this dream, is one of the most gripping things I’ve ever seen. As intense as that is, as our conversation continues, you’ll see that there are other parts of Ulla’s journey which are even more emotional. If you’re a regular listener,  you can probably tell I was al little nervous on this one - I was very excited to be talking with Ulla but also a little on edge because I knew I’d be asking some very personal questions so bare with me for that. Jonathan Chritchley, is one of the foremost fine art photographers in the world today. His work is instantly recognisable and can be found in exhibitions, galleries, magazines, books, and fine art collections around the world. His regular clients include Ralph Lauren, Ritz Carlton and Vogue Magazine. Jonathan also speaks and presents his work at photography and sailing events worldwide, and he is the founder and owner of Capture Earth and Ocean Capture, two companies specialising in luxury photography workshops & tours. Jonathan was named one of the 'Top 100 Photographers of All Time' by both the UK's Sunday Times newspaper and Professional Photographer Magazine.   His first book, SILVER,  was published in 2014, and in 2016 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS).Our conversation covers the pivotal moments in Jonathan’s life that led to him his signature style, how he creates his timeless images of horses, sailing boats and icebergs, the importance and value of staying on-brand and of course the stories behind some of his most beautiful images. Karen Waller is a photographer based in Adelaide, South Australia. It was Karen’s ICM images of agave plants that first caught my eye but digging into her portfolio I found she’s also a fantastic aerial photographer and an accomplished portrait photographer with an amazing and diverse portfolio.Karen’s creative journey started in childhood when she was encouraged to draw and paint and she went on to gain a degree in Visual Arts. Although photography has become her chosen medium, her work is still informed by the painter within. Karen’s courageous curiosity has shaped a photographer who’s work is quite unique and our conversation covers how she discovered ICM photography, how she has been able to use photography to get through difficult times, how she approaches new portrait subjects in the supermarket as well as the stories behind some of her most memorable photographs. Marlon du Toit is a wildlife photographer and safari guide based in South Africa. He literally grew up in a national park and he’s been working as a safari guide for nearly 20 years. Julia Redl is a landscape photographer from Lake Constance in Germany. Julia has become one of my favourite landscape photographers over the last year or so for her minimalist landscapes, her thoughtful, intimate, close ups and her photographs of moving water. Monty Rakusen specialises in photographing Industry, Engineering, Science and Energy, creating unique brand-building images that really stand out. Monty works collaboratively with clients and syndicates his pictures through image libraries like Image Source and Getty.
