Emotions as Indicators -40

Did you know that an emotion only lasts 6 seconds? That's how long the chemical process takes. It may seem like it lasts a lot longer, but that's because that initial reaction can become a feeling which has some nuances. We'll touch on that concept today, but mostly we are going to dive into a concept that may be very unfamiliar to you. I know it is pretty foreign to me. It's the idea that our emotions, those chemical reactions, are sending us signals for our personal benefit. That those messages and signals are meant for us, personally. They aren't about the people around us, they are about *us*. When we have a twinge of a strong emotion, we need to stop and get curious as Will Halpin mentioned during episode #32 on IFS - and try to figure out what that emotion might be telling us. There is more to the story and the thought - check out the episode and let me know if it resonates as you start to apply it to what is happening in your world. I know I've been impressed with the things it has helped me uncover! Kicking Your Bucket List

If you are part of The Grit Show community, you are someone who knows a thing or two about the curveballs that life can throw at you. Shawna had a big curve ball thrown at her in the summer of 2021. Just as the pandemic was starting to wane and life had the potential of getting back to normal, the results of a medical test sent things in a bit of a tailspin. When you get a referral to a neuro-oncologist, bucket lists are the type of things that come to mind. Shawna's response to this may not be typical, but she hopes it's one that becomes the new norm. Hopefully, it's a response that you'll connect to and that might inspire you to look at things a little differently, and hopefully do things a little differently. This is a replay of the previously aired episode and includes a story from a listener of what it inspired them to do. If this inspires you to make changes, please reach out and share your story as well. Decision Making–Getting Past Overthinking and Overwhelm w/Kirsten Parker

Decision making. It’s something we do every single day, multiple times a day. I’m sure we’ve all seen that sometimes. It can be overwhelming, even debilitating; no matter how much we are keeping it together in other areas, sometimes we get tripped up. Fortunately, Kirsten Parker realized this was a common theme she saw with the people she was coaching and it became something she specialized in. Our conversation touches on her journey to look at the hard questions and make the decisions that led her into her current role, as well as a story from her clients, and talking about how this applies to you. If you are someone who can get overwhelmed and overthink, who has a hard time sticking to the decisions you’ve made or just likes to laugh along with an intriguing conversation—this episode is for you. We’ll talk a bit about purpose too, because The Grit Show has found that purpose is a topic that resonates with our community. Kirsten helps overthinkers trust their choices. She spent years moving her life & career forward, Yale Master’s Degree in tow, feeling way more angst than certainty! Despite “success and smarts,” she second-guessed big AND small decisions, over-valued others’ opinions & usually catastrophized about what could go wrong. Coaching allowed her to finally feel calm, clear & confident—so she could feel present in her life—and that’s exactly what she helps clients do now. Cherry Blossoms, Epigenetics, & the Intergenerational Effects of Trauma

This week, we are revisiting one of our highest-rated episodes as selected by our listeners. It’s one that new listeners will appreciate, or something worth a re-listen, as the concept is valuable to revisit. We get to talk about something you would see as innocuous under most circumstances: cherry blossoms. However, the science of epigenetics and the inheritable intergenerational effects of trauma are quite intriguing and may have you looking at these lovely markers of spring in a whole new way. Epigenetics is something I’ve long been interested in and although this field is young and full of room for debate, there are a lot of interesting facts and things we can learn from it.Some of my takeaways may not be the ones that are discussed in the mainstream but will give you some food for thought. I’ll touch on a couple of studies that are referenced below but will also talk about the lenses that this research can give us as we move through our days and interact with those around us. There are things we cannot fully know or understand, and although it’s hard to accept this, it can be powerful in building our relationships and our ways of interacting with others once we do. Article on study of the Epigenetic effects of the Dutch Famine: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/31/science/dutch-famine-genes.htmlStudy by Brian Dias and Kerry Ressler Parental olfactory experience influences behavior and neural structure in subsequent generations:https://www.nature.com/articles/nn.3594 You can follow and listen to episodes of either of these podcasts on your favorite listening platform - or find out more about them at these links:  The Fire Inside Her https://thefireinsideher.com/podcast I AM MY passion project – launches 3/25/24 https://www.badass-silverstreak.com/home  To learn more about the Authentic Connections Podcast Network and its audacious goal of 37 by 27 (increasing the number of women-hosted podcasts to 37% by 2027) head over to Instagram and follow the account - https://instagram.com/37by27 https://linktr.ee/37by27 also has a little more info and will be updated with the upcoming training opportunities! We'd love to connect more with you.Grab your copy of our Self-Care Coloring Pages & get added to our mailing list. https://ColoringPages.TheGritShow.comFollow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/The.Grit.Show/Our Website has more information about us, all of our episodes, and all the transcripts:TheGritShow.com Are you ready to take that next step in your self-care journey? Reflection, and What Works for You -39

It's time for reflection and looking at some useful lessons worth sharing, and today we look at 3. One of them is the importance of reflection, so we had to build that right into the title. Take your own adviceTime for Reflection is CrucialWhat works for you – may not be what works for everyone else. We'll look at each of these a little deeper with some real examples. We also use our Grit Wit to dive into how to apply them, as well as some other ways of thinking, to your own life and things you may be contemplating. You also get to hear more about the coming season of The Grit Show (yes! Do you ever feel overwhelmed by the state of your closet, or all the excess items in your kitchen drawers? Does it seem that there isn't a lot of flow in your home and your life? Lessons Learned on Vulnerability from Daring Greatly -37

This week we get up close and personal on a hard topic, vulnerability. Fortunately, we have Brene Brown’s book Daring Greatly to help guide us as we navigate through. If you haven’t read Daring Greatly, this barely scratches the surfaces and primes the pump, so if this episode connects with you, you’ll definitely want to add it to your reading list. If you have read it, this is a great opportunity to revisit the myths around vulnerability and to take a moment to reflect on how you are applying this to your life, and how you might look at things with new lenses and examples. We primarily focus on the vulnerability myths that Brene talks about in her book. Some are bound to feel familiar. Perhaps the myth you can go it alone? Or vulnerability is a weakness? We’ll even talk about some boundaries that go with vulnerability and figuring out who you can trust. I even trust you with some pretty stark examples of vulnerable points in my life. I’m sure it will bring to mind vulnerable points in yours and reinforce the relationships that were of value. We also take a moment to reflect on Shame and Shame Resilience, because no conversation around vulnerability, Daring Greatly, or Brene Brown would be complete without it. It is only a small reflection, so be sure to explore some of Brene’s other work or send me a note on where you should start if this connects with you and is something you want to explore further. If you are interested in reading “Daring Greatly” snag your copy here- https://bookshop.org/a/90599/9781592408412 Other Books by Brene Brown:Rising StrongThe Gifts of ImperfectionBraving the WildernessA little about your host –Shawna Rodrigues is an entrepreneur, author, and consultant who found the alignment of her many talents and passions in podcasting. Guest Episode- The Fire Inside Her -Connection, Community, & Collaboration

Connection is something we seek from the time we are children.Building friendships and finding connection is something that can seem harder as we get older, rather than easier. Yet, connection, community, and collaboration are things we all need. Trish and Diane found commonality in their roles as leaders in the fire service. With less than 1% of women occupying the roles they are in, it was valuable to find someone else with this shared experience The two have built a solid connection over time, and in this episode reflect some on how they have cultivated and found value in this relationship. They also touch on the journey of a leader and the importance of the community you create that can help to hold you up when times are challenging. They touch on some leaders they look up to, share some challenging experiences they have been through, and share the ways they have grown. Trish says it best, she is a ‘perfectly imperfect’ leader, and the most important ingredient is to always be authentic and embrace the uniqueness that you bring to the table and to the position.Trish Connolly lives in Bend, Oregon, with her husband, son, and highly anxious dog- Duncan. She loves all outdoor activities, including mountain hikes, snowboarding, and mountain biking. She is a yogi, book club advocate, and inspiring meditator.Trish works at Bend Fire & Rescue and has been with her department for 22 years.
