Marxism Leninism Today (Ft. Donald Parkinson)

Get access to bonus episodes on Patreon at patreon.com/OneDime In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, I am joined by Donald Parkinson, co-host of the Cosmopod podcast and , editor and chief of Cosmonaut Magazine, a non-sectarian Marxist magazine that analyzes revolutionary strategy and encourages open-minded dialogue between communist tendencies such as Orthodox Marxism, Trotskyism, Marxism Leninism, Left Communism, Maoism, Anarchism, Bukharinism, and more.  Being in the center between ultraleftism and rightist communism, Donald does not neatly fit into the categories of classic leftist factions and their associated tropes. Avoiding dogmatism while still being an unapologetic revolutionary Marxist, Donald offers a good-faith critique of Marxism Leninism today that MLs and all leftists could learn from.  This podcast serves as a friendly critique of Marxism-Leninism today and the ideology of "anti-revisionism."  In particular, we critique ways in which Marxist Leninists and Maoists approach history and questions surrounding the Soviet Union, China, and "Actually Existing Socialism." We critique Marxist-Leninist historiography by critiquing Grover Furr, a writer who is frequently cited by MLs as to why Stalin "did nothing wrong" or that all of the atrocities in the USSR did not happen or were inevitable.  While it is easily to dismiss the rising popularity of Stalinism as just a bunch of online  "Tankies" (A term which has been bastardized by liberals), we believe it is important to take Stalinist trends on the left seriously and study history in a way that does not regress into binary thinking.  Check out Cosmonaut Magazine: https://cosmonautmag.com/ Check out Cosmopod on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1z2MBkFWYiU04QTU4R2abZ Donald's Twitter: https://twitter.com/donaldp1917 Support 1Dime on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime Be sure to give 1Dime Radio a 5 Star Rating on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

The Culture of Narcissism (Ft. C. Derick Varn)

Listen to the After Hours podcast on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime This episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast is about Christopher Lasch and his famous book "The Culture of Narcissism." As I am new to Lasch's work, I decided to bring on C. Derick Varn,  who has read all of Christopher Lasch's work and wrote about it. C. Derick Varn is an author, poet, veteran podcaster, educator, and host of the podcast Varn Vlog and co-host of the mortalscience podcast.  Check out Varn's excellent podcast here: https://www.youtube.com/c/CDerickVarnVlog/videos Varn Vlog is on all podcast platforms: https://varnvlogvoice.buzzsprout.com/ Varn's Twitter: https://twitter.com/skepoe This podcast is primarily about The Culture of Narcissism by Christopher Lasch and why Lasch's work and legacy is relevant to society today. In particular, this book is especially relevant to new age spirituality, hippies, the counterculture, individualism, neoliberalism, identity politics, performance activism, as well as the general widespread increase in egoism and self absorption in society.  In Part 2, Varn and I talk about campism on the left, anarcho-liberalism, social justice warriors, and the phenomenon of new Stalinism/“Tankies” Part 2 is a bonus episode for my patrons only. The Changing World Order DEBUNKED (Ft. Andrés Bernal)

Debunking Ray Dalio's viral video (and book) titled "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order." Ray Dalio is a billionaire investor who recently released a video titled "Principles for Dealing with the Changing World Order" (which is based on his book of the same title): https://youtu.be/xguam0TKMw8 The video put together by his team has been heavily promoted by the YouTube algorithm, reaching a a staggering 15 MILLION views. However, the video is filled with bad economics, blatant contradictions, ideological myths, misleading generalizations of history, and a backward neoliberal understanding of how money and inflation work. Dalio's flawed assumptions about economic history and the nature of money shape his problematic implications and neoliberal technocratic "centrist" political prescriptions. This episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast aims to debunk this Ray Dalio's video by deconstructing his talking points. In doing so, I am joined by Andrés Bernal, a MMT advocate, researcher, lecturer, and policy adviser (former advisor to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez). You can find his links and some of his work here:  Andrés Bernal Twitter: https://twitter.com/andresintheory Andrés Bernal on MMT as a theory of Inflation: https://www.global-isp.org/wp-content/uploads/WP-132.pdf Andrés on the Green New Deal: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/opinion-green-new-deal-cost_n_5c0042b2e4b027f1097bda5b Money on the Left: https://moneyontheleft.org/2022/04/09/economics-as-discourse/ The Modern Money Movement: https://mronline.org/2019/08/15/the-modern-money-movement-with-andres-bernal/ Podcast Timestamp:  0:00 Intro 6:10 Who is Ray Dalio?   10:55 Ray Dalio's False Assumptions 1:03:50 Ray Dalio's contradictory politics 1:41:20 Imperialist Realism Support 1Dime on Patreon and get access to bonus episodes: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime Be sure to give 1Dime Radio a 5 Star Rating on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

Legalize All Drugs?

The War on Drugs has failed. Prohibition does not work. But why? What is the alternative? Should we support drug decriminalization or drug legalization? If so, should all drugs be legal and regulated by the state? Would this be a good idea under capitalism?  In this episode of the 1Dime Radio Podcast, I am joined by Mark Edwards from the excellent UltraViolet podcast. Mark is passionate about the topic of harm reduction and drug policy, and has lots of first hand experience with the issue of drug addition through working as a paramedic and as a former user.   You can find Mark's Ultraviolet podcast here: https://www.youtube.com/c/UltraVioletPod In the first half of the podcast, Mark and I discuss why prohibition does not work and why it makes things significantly worse. I bring the political economic analysis while Mark brings the first hand personal experience. In the second half of the podcast, we discuss which policy solutions are best for harm reduction such as Drug Decriminalization (as is done in countries like Portugal) and Drug Legalization with government regulation (as is partially done in the Netherlands and with cannabis in countries like Canada and in some US states such as California, Oregon, and Colorado).  Lastly, we discuss the potential risks of turning drugs into legal commodities in a capitalist society as well as the problematic psychological appeal of wanting to ban drugs and why Marxist-Leninists tend to be conservative on this debate.  We do not condone the use of any illicit substances in this podcast.  Part 2 is an exclusive Patreon podcast for patrons only which can be found at https://www.patreon.com/OneDime Be sure to give 1Dime Radio a 5 Star Rating on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

The Coming Tech Bubble

Cryptocurrency is filled with ponzi schemes, but so is the entire tech sector. Chris from the Beyond Binary Thinking Podcast joins me to talk about how Silicon Valley is filled with faux utopian lies, Ponzi schemes, and marketing myths of "innovation." We discuss the current stock market crash, the 2008 financial crash, the dot-com bubble, and whether or not the current tech bubble will burst.    Chris has first-hand experience in the tech sector as the Co founder of a successful software company, which is why he's talking with me today about why he believes we're in a tech bubble that's about to burst. Chris is host of the podcast Beyond Binary Thinking, exploring the nuance beyond the debates in politics, philosophy and economics.    You can find the Beyond Binary Thinking Podcast here: https://youtu.be/mezZsfkj55k  The stock market is crashing, the cryptocurrency market is crashing, and many companies are on the verge of collapse following the Federal Reserve deciding to raise interest rates. With a fragile economy fueled on private debt, a raise in interest rates is enough to collapse the market like a house of cards. Or is it? Could the state keep propping up this bubble economy with central bank money?  Let us know what you think! Capital As Power: A New Theory of Capitalism

Get Access to exclusive episodes by becoming a Patron: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, we explore CASP: Capital As Power. A relatively new heterodox theoretical framework of political economy that takes a lot from Veblen school of economics, Marxian Economics, and anarchist ideas and makes it's own unique contributions that question the assumptions of neoclassical economics, Keynesian economics, and Marxist economics. I am joined by my friend DenimGod, who is a graduate student of economics at the New School and specializing in CASP.    You can find him on Twitter at: https://twitter.com/DenimGod4lyfe  Capital as Power was invented by Jonathan Nitzan and Shimshon Bichler in their book "Capital as Power: A Study of Order and Creorder." The Guest gives a synopsis of CASP and how it can help us understand economic phenomenon such as stagflation, austerity, and why capitalists paradoxically advocate for policies that lead to lower economic growth.   Support 1Dime on Patreon at patreon.com/OneDime Be sure to give the podcast a 5 Star Rating on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

The Myth Of Canadian Healthcare

In this episode of the 1Dime Radio podcast, I am joined by Kieran Fong, a Canadian documentary filmmaker from Edmonton, Canada whose films focus on controversial social issues.  In January, he released his documentary short "Hippocrates: A Guide to Treating Healthcare Workers" on YouTube, which explored the privatization of Canadian healthcare: https://youtu.be/ix7qCwiadoE By releasing his film, he hopes to expose the corruption of conservative government's healthcare management while also highlighting solutions to improve healthcare systems around the world.  Canada's Healthcare system is often touted by American leftists and liberals as the mode to aspire to. Bernie Sanders frequently cited Canada's "Medicare for all" system as the model that America should seek to follow. But a closer examination of the reality reveals something different. Canada's healthcare system has been gradually privatized and cut ever since the rise of neoliberalism and the quality the system provides has significantly diminished.  Watch Kieran Fong's short minidocumentary to learn more about the bleak realities of Canadian Healthcare and the lessons leftists around the world can learn form it. In this podcast, talk about how Canada got healthcare in the first place with Tommy Douglass and the Canadian socialist movement, and then how Canada has gradually lost it's healthcare pillages. We also discuss how to improve healthcare systems and how to use what is happening to bring people to the left.  Check out Kieran Fong's Chanel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCss9QzRe66XXTeRuOGdpLOA Support 1Dime on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime   Be sure to give the podcast a 5 Star Rating on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

The Fall of the USSR: What Went Wrong?

Part 3: Was The Soviet Union "Socialist'? on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/OneDime Part 2 on the Marxist Project's Channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNalGyK3DaK37GTLIHSwmyA/featured  In this podcast I am joined by YouTuber, friend, and grad student The Marxist Project, who makes excellent videos on Marxist theory and Soviet history.  In this in-depth podcast, we put into question various competing narratives that aim to rationalize the tragedy of the Soviet Union. We talk about some of the many problems in the Soviet Union and various historical narratives about what went wrong and what lead to it's demise.    For this podcast, we try to avoid the hurdles of one dimensional narratives from various ideological tendencies (Marxism-Leninism, Trotskyism, Maoism, Left Communism, Orthodox Marxism, Anarchism, Liberalism, conservatism, etc..) and try to give a balanced analysis of the USSR and the problems it faced.   Check out The Marxist Project's video on the Fall of the Soviet Union: https://youtu.be/N7Z-D4eybZI  Timestamp:   0:00 Intro 6:10 The Collapse of the Soviet Union   16:28 The Civil War: Doomed From The Start?   27:58 Semi-Feudal Underdevelopment  41:33 Collectivization, WW2, and Industrialization   57:54 Famines, Incentives, and Lysenkoism  1:10:00 Repression and Civil Liberties  1:28:32 The Red Purges and Opportunism  1:48:32 Was the USSR Democratic?   2:13:10 Contrarianism and Denialism  2:20:41 Central Planning    Book recommendations on Soviet History:  The Soviet Century by Moshe Lewin  A People's History of the Russian Revolution by Neil Faulkner  October: The Story of the Russian Revolution by China Miéville  The Thinking Reed: Intellectuals and the Soviet State by Boris Kagarlitsky  Everyday Stalinism by Sheila Fitzpatrick   Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation by Alexei Yurchak  Revolution From Above: The Demise of the Soviet System by David Kotz This is part of a 3 part series on the political problems in the Soviet Union.
