Interview with Atelier Ten's Nico Kienzl

Nico is a founding director of Atelier Ten's New York City office and member of Atelier Ten's US and international leadership group. He consults on a wide variety of large scale residential, commercial and institutional buildings, as well as on masterplan and renovation work in the United States, Europe, South America and Asia. Nico specializes in the application of advanced building analysis including facade optimization, daylight and shading analysis, and in the optimization of building systems. Recent work includes, among others, the first LEED Platinum condominium high rise in New York City, the sustainability framework and first two significant buildings for Columbia University's new Manhattanville Campus, the U.S. Embassies in Nairobi and Brasilia, the Masterplan and Phase 1 for the Fulbright University Vietnam campus, the new wing for the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the new LEED Platinum-target Comcast Research and Innovation Center tower in Philadelphia. Nico has held teaching engagements at Harvard GSD, Pratt Institute and Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture Planning and Preservation with a focus on building systems integration and sustainability. He is a LEED Fellow, and served as an industry representative member on the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Green Building Advisory Committee from 2011-2016. He also serves on the board of Urban Green Council and Storefront for Art and Architecture. Nico holds a Dipl. Ing. in Architecture from the Technical University in Munich, an M.S. in Building Technology from MIT and a DDes from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University. I can't believe it, we're halfway through 2020, what a wild and crazy year it has been for all of us. Creating Innovative Tools for the Green Building Movement with SIG's Kristina Bach

Kristina earned both her Master of Architecture and her Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee along with certificates in Sustainable Design and Historic Preservation. A LEED Accredited Professional since 2008, Kristina is also a self-proclaimed credential junkie. She was the fifth person in the world to obtain all five LEED AP specialties as well as being an early adopter in the WELL AP program. Kristina has a wide array of experience in sustainable design including traditional architectural practice/design, performing official LEED reviews while working at USGBC/GBCI, and acting as a sustainable consultant. Her experience includes work on both new construction projects as well as existing buildings and spans the gamut of the commercial real estate sector including offices, higher education, healthcare, and community buildings. Kristina serves as the Chair of the Minnesota Wellness Collaborative, an industry volunteer group aimed at developing market demand and industry capacity for wellness in the built environment. Susan Heinking and Sustainability Innovation at Pepper Construction

As a licensed architect and LEED Fellow, Susan Heinking has over a decade of experience designing and managing sustainability programs and initiatives. She currently leads all of Pepper Construction's sustainable projects and is also an active advocate for sustainability in the Chicago and other regional markets. Her many initiatives include Chicago's Energy Benchmarking Ordinance, the AIA2030 Chicago Working Group, co-chairing Chicago's AIA COTE knowledge group, participating in RETROFIT Chicago, and working with the Chicago Biomimicry Group. In addition, she leads over $2.4 billion in high-performance projects. Some of my top accomplishments include designing the first biophilic Walgreens flagship store in Northwestern Hospital, managing the Google Chicago headquarters sustainability efforts, designing the first functional Net Zero construction trailer and currently working to make the world's first net-zero zoo in Cincinnati. Her work at Pepper enables her to put design into action, provide decision-making tools that determine investment paybacks and reduced operating costs, lead Pepper's projects to their sustainability goals, assist clients with their corporate environmental compliance during construction, and put existing buildings on a path to sustainability. Her vision for Pepper includes expanding the high-performance perspective to create greater value through building performance and human performance. This includes enhancing existing efforts with energy modeling, ROI analysis, and local utility incentives as well as building on Pepper's healthy jobsite initiative "Nothing Hits the Floor" program and promoting the use of healthy building materials and construction practices to protect the long-term health of construction workers. Senior Sustainability Consultant from Atlanta: Allison Cunningham

LEED AP BD+C, LEED Project Reviewer, WELL AP: Allison Cunningham Prior to joining Ecoworks Studio, Allison took a leap and moved from her home state of Indiana to Atlanta, GA to pursue her passion for sustainable design as a consultant for a well-established and nationally recognized sustainable consulting firm. There she quickly assumed the role of primary project manager for several significant projects varying in size, location, LEED Rating System, and LEED Certification level. Currently, as a long-time project manager for Ecoworks Studio, Allison brings a wealth of knowledge from past projects and uses a collaborative and practical approach to guide her projects to reach their sustainability and certification goals. Allison is a member of the USGBC Georgia Chapter and is an on-going member of the USGBC Georgia Chapter Atlanta Branch Outreach Committee where she aids in organizing volunteer opportunities and events to promote sustainability and education in the Atlanta and greater Atlanta communities. She also has an Interior Design degree from Purdue University and prior to graduation completed the Industry Cooperative Education Program working for a furniture dealer and interior design firm in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
