Austin, TX's Gail Vittori and Maximizing Building Potential
Gail Vittori is Co-Director of the Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems, a non-profit design firm established in 1975 dedicated to sustainable planning, design, and demonstration. Since 1993, Vittori has coordinated the Center's Sustainable Design in Public Buildings Program, including serving as a sustainable design consultant for the Pentagon Renovation Program's Commissioning Team from 1999 to 2006, numerous City of Austin design projects. Beginning in 2000, Vittori led several national initiatives focused on greening the health care sector and advancing environmental health considerations in green building. Examples include collaborating on the development of the American Society of Healthcare Engineering's (ASHE) Green Healthcare Construction Guidance Statement, and the Green Guide for Health Care, convened by the Center in 2002, a project of CMPBS and Health Care Without Harm. She currently serves as a Co-Coordinator of the Green Guide for Health Care and is Founding Chair of the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Healthcare core committee (2004–2008). Vittori has spearheaded emerging green and affordable housing initiatives, tools and resources, including directing a Hands Across America program in 1989 that created a building materials exchange and cooperative homebuilding training program for colonias residents along the Texas Rio Grande Valley; consulting to the DC Housing Authority to establish a green materials library and assessment process; being invited to participate on the 5-person core development team of Enterprise Community Foundation's Green Communities Initiative in 2004; and, in 2008, spearheading a successful initiative to develop green building criteria for the Texas-based Meadows Foundation capital grant funding. In 1989, Vittori proposed a conceptual framework for what evolved as the City of Austin's Green Building Program, the only U.S. program recognized at the 1992 U.N. Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, and the first green building program in the world. Along with Pliny Fisk, she oversaw the program's early stage development through 1992. Austin's Green Builder Program influenced the formation of the U.S. Green Building Council and LEED, in addition to scores of policies throughout the U.S. and abroad. Additionally, from 1988 to 1998, she served on the City's Solid Waste Advisory Commission, six of those years as founding chair, a committee formed in response to a successful initiative co-coordinated by Vittori to cancel a proposed waste-to-energy municipal solid waste incinerator. Her work on establishing pay as you throw recycling residential programs, in addition to recycling programs for the City's commercial and multi-family sectors, has led Austin to having one of the nation's most successful recycling programs. Her work in this area continues with promoting zero waste by 2040, adopted by the Austin City Council in January 2009. Show Highlights Gail shares what you need to know as a green guide for healthcare aligned with a green building rating system. A comprehensive look at process water and LEED prerequisites. How do we avoid using unhealthy materials in buildings in order to promote health? The evolution of LEED and how it raises the bar while not eliminating an entry point. Utilizing rainwater and stormwater as valuable resources. Gail shares how Austin holds on to the environmental values in all of its new developments. One of the important distinctions is that the HPD is a standard. It's not a certification. Every action we take needs a health lens and let's ask these two essential questions. "2020. It's the year of letting us see where the cracks are and what we need to focus on. I'm really sort of taking this time as a wake up call to pay attention to those cracks and to do what we can in our small way to address them in terms of the way we approach our work, our relationships with other organizations and to hopefully come out of this with some clarity in terms of what is the new pattern language going forward." - Gail Vittori Gail Vittori Transcript Gail Vittori's Show Resource and Information Climatic Design: Energy-Efficient Building by Donald Watson Gail Vittori | Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems LinkedIn Twitter Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram GBES is excited our membership community is growing. Healthy Building and Landscapes with Rebecca Bryant
Rebecca Dunn Bryant, AIA co-founded W A T E R S H E D in 2008 in order to build expertise around affordable, sustainable building solutions for a hot humid climate, create built environments that inspire a greater connection with the natural world, and to perform work in the spirit of collaboration, sharing information with her clients and community. Originally from Alabama, Rebecca moved to Colorado to study sustainable design and social ecology in 1990 and worked in San Francisco and Houston before returning home to get red dirt back under her feet. Rebecca has received a Synergy Award from the Citizen's Environmental Coalition, been recognized as one of 9 "Green Leaders in Red States" by Fortune Magazine and recently voted one of her region's "Top 40 under 40." She is the first LEED Faculty member in the state of Alabama, and since 2008, she has provided green building training to over 2,000 professionals and over 200 school children. Rebecca's passion for sustainable development is focused on sustainable design, construction, and operational strategies for the hot humid south. While the growing green building movement is international, her approach is decidedly local. Registered Architect in Alabama and Florida LEED Fellow LEED Accredited Professional, BD+C Living Building Ambassador Passive House Consultant Permaculture Designer Show Highlights Why was the recession a Watershed moment? The key to transform the market is to raise the level of practice for firms. Economic, environmental, and sustainability restoration projects that create great experiences in nature. Elevate your standard of practice and raise awareness on best practices in LEED, SITES, WELL, Wildlife Habitats, and other certifications with Rebecca's valuable resources. "We need you. The need for people to transform the way we build is more and more urgent so don't lose heart and please stick to your guns and follow this path. The other thing I would say, based on my experience is we need to spread out. We don't need all of our sustainable design experts to live in places where everyone in that town agrees with and has already drank the Kool Aid. We need them to spread out, dispersing this movement into more communities and making connections with other movements." - Rebecca Dunn Bryant Rebecca Dunn Bryant Transcript Rebecca Dunn Bryant's Show Resource and Information WATERSHED Sustainable Design and Consulting Living Beautifully: with Uncertainty and Change by Pema Chodron Insight Timer Books By Edward O. Founder of Living Building Challenge: Jason McLennan
Jason F. McLennan is an architect and prominent figure in the green building movement. He is the Founder and the board of the International Living Future Institute and Cascadia Green Building Council, a chapter of both the U.S. Green Building Council and the Canada Green Building Council. He is the CEO of McLennan Design, his own architecture and planning firm that does work all over the world. McLennan is also one of the creator of Pharos, an advanced building material rating system, Declare, an ingredient disclosure label for building products, and JUST, a social justice transparency platform for organizations. In addition, he developed the Living Community Challenge and the Living Product Challenge. Show Highlights Jason transformed the industry when he launched these projects, programs, and materials certifications to build on what LEED had started. Get inspired by a pioneer that really shook up and raised the bar in how a green building can be built and operated. The brilliant thing LEED did for the market and changing the world. How the Living Building Challenge supplements LEED for those that are ready to go beyond looking at levels of certification. Jason created the Red List to do the "impossible" to create transparency and change the course of conversations for manufacturers all over the world. 2020 is proving to be a year of incredible disruption. Jason gives you humanity's next 5 assignments we need to default to. We need to find and focus on the end game. Why green building is way off target in every category of impact. How to go further and faster. Check out The New Climate Pledge Arena. "Mentorship has been incredibly important to me. I think we reach our potential when we learn from others who have been down the paths further...It really pays to listen to elders and learn from those that have walked the path before you. I think too many people now, for whatever reason, discount our elders and that's great peril. They focus too much on themselves and that's what technology and the social communication and everything that we have at our disposal is allowing for sort of a level of narcissism that's unhealthy." -Jason McLennan Jason McLennan Transcript Jason McLennan's Show Resources and Information Jason McLennan: Books - Amazon.com Drawdown: McLennan Design: Home International Living Future Institute 097 Marni Jade Evans LinkedIn Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES Charlie on LinkedIn Green Building Educational Services GBES on Twitter Connect on LinkedIn Like on Facebook Google+ GBES Pinterest Pins GBES on Instagram GBES is excited our membership community is growing.
