31. The Limited Space for Black Evangelicals In White Spaces: With Dr. Jemar Tisby

Jemar Tisby, author, scholar, activist and student of the renowned author and scholar Dr. William Pannell, discusses racism within Evangelicalism based on the book by Dr. Pannell, The Coming Race War. Jemar, gives the history and background on his mentor, Dr. Pannell. He explains how in 1992, Dr. Pannell identified the crisis that white Evangelicalism continues to ignore about racism both in secular society but also in Evangelical theology and churches. Tim and Jemar explore how that lack of identification of black voices within Evangelicalism makes it difficult for white Evangelicals to hear their position on racism. Jemar, explains how historical context is important to understand the current minimization of racism and its implications on society as a whole. Jemar, also explains the whitelash, or the silencing of black voices on this subject, and how it hinders the work that Jemar and other black scholars/activists/theologians do. Finally, Jemar and Tim look at ways to support black Christians in their work to fight racism within Evangelicalism, as well as in other spheres of society.Give to the WitnessGet The Coming Race WarFollow us // @thenewevangelicalsFollow Jemar Tisby // @jemartisbyAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. 28. The Radical Evangelical History You Were Never Taught: With Ben Cremer

Ben Cremer, historian, pastor and friend, breaks down the beginnings of the movement historians later called Evangelicalism. Tim and Ben, start from the beginning in pre-Civil War America and how people like Charles Phiney saw the ills within society and decided to apply their Christianity to the community around them. Ben, explains these Revivalists, as they referred to themselves, saw slavery, women’s subjugation and the predatory practices of the rich on the poor as immoral. This led to the Second Great Awakening and the abolitionist movement. Tim and Ben, examine how this idea led to modern beliefs that differ so much from the original movement. The book Discovering an Evangelical Heritage by Donald W. Dayton is also discussed and its importance in understanding early Evangelicals.Follow Ben on Twitter // @BrcremerFollow The New Evangelicals on Instagram // @thenewevangelicalsThe New Evangelicals is completely crowd funded. 25. Centering the Gospel of Jesus on the Oppressed with Rev. Megan Madsen

Megan Madsen, a Wesleyan theologian, discusses with Tim whether or not social justice is Biblical justice.  From the Hebrew Bible to the Gospels, Megan breaks down how Judaism viewed injustice and how God expected Israel to respond to oppression of any kind. Megan, also reorients believers to an oppressed centered gospel in which the Spirit of God moves through a believer and accomplishes good deeds through them. She points out that modern Evangelicalism is centered on the white, male, heteronormative, Christian, captialist model and the gospel must benefit that believer. This is in contrast to the believer being beneficial to those around them, especially the most vulnerable in society.Follow Tim on Instagram // @thenewevangelicals Support Our Work Check out the new merchJoin Our Facebook Community Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy Learn more about your ad choices. 24. The Psychology of Abusive Leadership with Dr. Katie Blake

Dr. Katie, professor and researcher as well as master level yoga instructor, breaks down how Evangelical spaces can co-opt our identities and provide breeding grounds for abusive authority. Dr. Katie, explains early childhood development and how that creates our formation of identity. Identity, she argues, influences what kind of relational intimacy we have as adults. Tim and Dr. Katie, explore how churches, by their very nature of subjective truth, have a greater influence than authority figures who operate from objective fact. This pushes the average church goer to conform. Dr. Katie and Tim, look at how to do embodiment integration especially for women in deconstruction spaces who were survivors of spiritual abuse/trauma.Dr. Katie's WebsiteFollow Tim on Instagram // @thenewevangelicals The New Evangelicals is completely crowd funded.
