Dr. Kim TallBear: Critical Polyamorist & Dakota Queen - Ep 14

Dr. Kim TallBear, Professor of Native Studies, author, and regular international media commentor on issues related to Indigenous peoples, science, sexualities, and non-monogamy weaves wisdom throughout her amazing life story on this episode of Open Deeply. As a small child, Kim knew she was a queen, but the intergenerational impact of settler colonization created many hurdles for herself and her Dakota indigenous relatives. Poverty, sexual abuse, and chaos all impacted her childhood as is tragically the case for so many North American Indigenous children. However, she funneled her consequent anger to break free, creating a new reality for herself. This anger got her out into the world making her both politically and intellectually oppositional. Concurrent with her activism, she experienced non-monogamy for the first time in college, finding it very comfortable, but knowing the world would not approve. Flash forward to now, Kim is a leading intellectual on the topics of non-monogamy, Native Studies, and how these topics intersect. Her passionate explanation regarding why polyamorists, especially relationship anarchists, are allies for indigenous people, as they push back against settler colonial social norms, is profoundly mind expanding and needed. And there is so much more to this amazing episode. So, we hope you will join us for another riveting episode of Open Deeply. Babatunde Akinboboye - Nigerian Childstar to Hiphopera Guy Ep 12

Babatunde Akinboboye, the HipHopera Guy, joins us in an eye opening episode of Open Deeply. While Babatunde weaves operatic excellence seamlessly with hiphop and trap beats, you can see that he brims over with next level passion and joy. You would never suspect the intense struggle that he has overcome across his life. While his early childhood was filled with love and cuddles, it brutally shifted to one of physical abuse, a struggle with undiagnosed ADHD while feeling lost, depressed and lonely. But soon, Babatunde was kidnapped out of this emotionally unbearable situation by a benevolent family intervention leading to new opportunities, especially in music. However, the struggle didn’t end there. Once in the U.S., he contended with racism and the experience of being othered, not just in school, but later from the international opera establishment despite its self-assessment of being evolved and civilized. Clearly, not so much. But neither struggle nor obstacle has ever blocked Babatunde for long. Eventually, he, along with the Black Opera Alliance, stood up against the old school opera establishment and he broke free from their stagnant rules when he launched his hiphopera style which has been embraced by ever growing fan base and the media. Please join us for another amazing life story on Open Deeply. Jimanekia Eborn Tends Her Garden - Ep 10

Jimanekia Eborn, who refers to herself as a “child of trauma”, takes us on her powerful life journey from witnessing her mother being brutally murdered at the age of one to becoming an inspiring expert in the areas of sexual trauma support and sex education with a special love for helping those with marginalized identities. Her childhood included many struggles related to class, race, and bodily autonomy. By age twelve, she had already learned that Black bodies are commodified which contributed to her difficulties with internalized body shame and her choice to keep her sexual awakening very private. Despite never being kissed until age seventeen, college was a game changer. Here, she discovered the “power of her pussy”. She organically found non-monogamy and even experienced her first play party. After college, Jimanekia traversed the mental health field, finally finding her soul’s love while holding space for sexual abuse survivors, helping them heal while concurrently educating on healthy, shame free sex.
