Ep. 102: Why therapy affects every aspect of your life, with makeup artist and podcast host Rachel Estabrook

This week’s guest is New York based makeup artist and podcast host Rachel Estabrook. You might already know Rachel's work or you might recognise her name from the recent burnout podcast I did.  I wanted to invite Rachel on for a dedicated episode because not only is she a makeup artist who freely shares her work journey, she’s also pretty funny, often poking at the ups and downs of life on-set and she’s recently been very open about her experiences of therapy. In this episode I wanted to find out what therapy really is and how it's changed or improved Rachel's life. I also wanted to find out how she first fell in love with makeup and of course I ask about the beauty products she’s loving right now. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did! You can check Rachel and her work @estabrookartistry on Instagram and be sure to check out her beauty industry podcast Seriously Madeup anywhere you like to listen. Do please rate and review and be sure to follow me on Instagram @beautymepodcast. Ep. 101: My year end empties round-up

This week’s episode is all about the empties! It’s been a while since I’ve done one and I feel like it makes total sense to do one right now as we close out the year. For me, this past year has seen my skin go through some major upheaval, not to mention, major maskne and that made me change everything. So in this episode there will be some tried and true products and also a few that I’ve only had in rotation for two to three months. You can find links to all the products mentioned below and I’ll definitely let you know if a product was a gift rather than a purchase. If you enjoyed this episode or want to know more about the products I’ve mentioned, let me know over @beautymepodcast on Instagram or Twitter. And do please subscribe, rate and review when you can, as it really helps BeautyMe be seen.  Sign up to my newsletter here: https://beautymenotes.substack.com Check out my YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKuq1As9ifCJOxvPOv6w3wQ Products mentioned: Dermatica Prescription: https://www.dermatica.co.uk Ole Henriksen Dewtopia 20% Acid Night Treatment: https://www.boots.com/ole-henriksen-dewtopia-20-acid-night-treatment-30ml-10296449 Ole Henriksen Glow2OH Dark Spot Toner: https://www.boots.com/ole-henriksen-glow2oh-dark-spot-toner-190ml-10260492 Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant: https://www.paulaschoice.co.uk/skin-perfecting-bha-lotion-exfoliant/m2051.html?dwvar_m2051_size=fullsize&cgid= The Ordinary Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%: https://www.beautybay.com/p/the-ordinary/azelaic-acid-suspension-10/azelaic-acid-suspension-10-100/ Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster: https://www.paulaschoice.co.uk/aa-booster/7750.html The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA: https://deciem.com/en-gb/theordinary/mas-rdn-natural-moisturizing-factors-ha.html Cosrx Advanced Snail Radiance Dual Essence: https://www.feelunique.com/p/COSRX-Advanced-Snail-Radiance-Dual-Essence-80ml Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence Gel: https://www.boots.com/cosrx-advanced-snail-96-mucin-power-essence-gel-100ml-10280721 Laneige Water Sleeping Mask Ultra Violette Supreme Screen Hydrating Facial Skinscreen SPF50 Gallinée Face Vinegar Ouai x Byredo Mojave Ghost Leave In Conditioner

Ep. 100: Meet The Founder: Reflecting on 100 episodes with my first ever guest MDMflow's Florence Adepoju

It’s episode 100! Wow. It made a lot of sense for me to bring back my very first guest EVER on BeautyMe, because we have both evolved a lot since that first episode aired in June 2019.  Florence Adepoju is the Founder of THREE companies - and counting - she’s also helping others build their own beauty brands with https://www.famlabs.co. Before @famlabs, nine years ago Flow created MDMflow, a brand that would go on to gain iconic status due to its aesthetic being rooted in hip hop, including its collectible gold bullet lipsticks. So I invited her on for a very special Live episode for the Meet the Founder series. If you haven't checked it out already, Meet the Founder is a series that takes place exclusively on IGTV Live and the audio version goes up days later. Feel free to check out previous guests if you're planning on launching your own brand in 2022 - you can find them: https://www.instagram.com/beautymepodcast/channel/ In this episode Flow shares her tips for success, and hard work is right up there, along with a strong set of core values. Oh and she also drops a MAJOR life news bomb on me! As always do please share, subscribe, rate and review - I want to make sure the next 100 episodes are even better than what we've done so far! Thank you for every single listen. You can also find me on Twitter @beautymepodcast and I have a YouTube channel too: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKuq1As9ifCJOxvPOv6w3wQ

Ep. 99: Discovering the joy of beauty with legendary beauty blogger Felicia Walker

I’m beyond excited to introduce this week’s guest. I have been an avid fan and follower of Felicia Walker, AKA ThisThatBeauty for almost 10 years I think. I can’t remember what first enticed me to follow Felicia but I knew that I related to her, as a beauty journo, as a woman of colour in the beauty world, and as someone who has dealt with different skin issues at different times in my life. Although I should point out that Felicia’s only skin issue is that it’s RIDICULOUSLY glowy. While influencers and makeup artists might have been getting into dewy skin over the past few years, Felicia was always an advocate for that really lit from within skin. As someone who began blogging about beauty back in 2008, more so as a vehicle for her to solve her own skin issues, Felicia is beauty business royalty; she is relatable, she is real and she is ageing backwards! We cover a lot of ground in this episode. We discuss why finding the right skincare is an evolutionary process that cannot be prescribed by an influencer and of course I HAD to ask her about her own skincare regime and I promise she gives all the deets. As with all of my guests, I try to find out where Felicia first encountered beauty and I loved hearing her talk of the joy of discovery as she walked down the aisles of her local beauty supply store. Thanks so much for listening. I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! Please do give Felicia a follow @thisthatbeauty and please tag me @beautymepodcast and let me know you’re listening! Ep.98: Beauty Influencer Demi Colleen on diversity, racism and why quitting is so rewarding

This week’s guest is Demi Colleen, AKA Beauty Influencer of the Year at the recent Blogosphere awards here in the UK. For me, Demi is beyond anything that you might assume of an influencer in the traditional sense. She might be an influencer but she’s not afraid of making beauty brands accountable when it comes to diversity, inclusion and outright racism. Since launching her blog in 2017 Demi, who is of Jamaican and Irish descent, has carved out her own niche, so, in this episode I wanted to find out what started her on her journey into beauty content. I also had to ask about her ongoing argument with UK chemist and beauty chain, Boots, and we discuss the trauma and shame that often comes with purchasing products that are made with black people and people of colour in mind. I find out what made Demi quit her studying – she had hoped to become a solicitor – and we discuss the bravery that is required when it’s time to quit something that was initially a priority. Honestly, I feel you will gain so much from listening to this episode! Do please rate and review and please share with someone you think could benefit from listening. You can find Demi on Instagram @demicolleen and you'll find @beautymepodcast on Instagram and Twitter and be sure to sign up for my newsletter https://beautymenotes.substack.com. Ep. 97: Burnout Pt1: How it Feels

This week’s episode is part one of a burnout miniseries. The first part is all about how burnout shows up in our bodies and the second part will focus on solutions we can try to make things feel a little bit better. So, in this episode I’ve invited six friends and former guests to send me their thoughts on burnout. You’ll hear from makeup artist and host of the Seriously Madeup podcast Rachel Estabrook; beauty content creators Sarah Novio and Alanna Campbell, artist Phoebe J Martin, herbalist and period coach Natasha Richardson and Lauren Napier of Lauren Napier Beauty. I wanted to share their thoughts because since 2019, we have changed the way we look at burnout. It’s gone from being something that might be frowned upon in the workplace, to a condition pretty much everyone struggles with at some time, particularly since the pandemic. And it can be incredibly damaging if we don't address it. I’d love to know your thoughts, so please tag me on social when you’re listening, and feel free to send in your own voice notes over on Instagram @beautymepodcast. Please check out my guests on Instagram: @estabrookartistry @altogetheralanna @sarah_novio @foragebotanicals @phoebejmartin @laurennapierbeauty You can see more of me on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKuq1As9ifCJOxvPOv6w3wQ and you can also find me on Twitter @beautymepodcast and be sure to sign up for newsletter at https://beautymenotes.substack.com.

Ep. 96: Beauty standards in the age of filters and fillers with Berlin-based content creator Jessica G

Berlin-based beauty creator Jessica G adores makeup for so many reasons and has grown up during the rise of social media. As such she has complex views on being both an influencer (approaching 30K on Instagram) and being influenced by what she sees. In this episode Jessica reminisces about her mum giving her chamomile tea hair rinses as a child and remembers how she felt when she first encountered acne as a teenager. She shares how she first started playing with makeup and how YouTube was a major part of that, and why she often feels tempted by lip fillers and other tweakments that she sees on other influencers and celebrities. We also touch on burnout and overwhelm, two things I’m definitely going to be focusing on over the next few episodes. Join the BeautyMe community on IG and Youtube: @beautymepodcast/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKuq1As9ifCJOxvPOv6w3wQ and be sure to tag me while you’re listening! Ep. 95: Meet the Founder with Jason Lau of Canadian beauty brand Phytosurgence

This week’s episode is a brand new Meet the Founder with Jason Lau, the owner, founder, and just about everything else at Canadian beauty brand Phytosurgence. The Meet the Founder series is an opportunity to chat with the face behind the brand, and Phytosurgence is fast becoming a cult-like phenomenon. Personally, I think that’s down to Jason’s very hands-on approach; he truly enjoys the process of creating new formulas and colours. Meet the Founder always takes place on Instagram Live, as I wanted it to be an interactive experience; so if you’d like to see Jason and I in action – and you really should because his skin is ridiculously glowy! – then head to @beautymepodcast on Instagram and check it out. I apologise in advance for the audio issues on my side; occasionally you might come across a couple of glitches. In this episode Jason explains how he got his start as a completely self-funded business; why he doesn’t think the customer is always right, and why he will never sell to a Big Beauty corporation. Be sure to check out Jason’s amazing Instagram Stories over @phytosurgence on Instagram and sign up to my newsletter to stay in touch at You can also find me on Twitter @beautymepodcast and YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKuq1As9ifCJOxvPOv6w3wQ

Ep. 94: Burnout and thinking about the future

Hi! After a short break I'm back with an episode that's full of reflection, and questions! Burnout has been on my mind a lot, and as we make our way towards episode 100, I really want the next few episodes to offer solutions. I want to talk to my guests about their experiences with burnout, whether they’re beauty pros or students; whether they’re in the public eye or not. I want to ask them about their own personal solutions when they are feeling overwhelmed.  And I’d love to hear from you too, so please drop me a voice note over on the @beautymepodcast Instagram or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Tell me how you’re prepping for these final days of a year that has been so incredibly tough. Let’s share our solutions; I’d love to hear from you. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter; this week's one has been much discussed as I finally watched that Jesy Nelson and Nicki Minaj video... Oh and just in case Instagram goes down again, you can also find me on Twitter @beautymepodcast – I’m also on Facebook. Thanks for listening! Ep. 93: The on-going conversation around Skims and Kim Kardashian with Darian Symoné Harvin

This week’s episode is essentially about Skims, Kim Kardashians’ cult status lingerie and loungewear line that is known for its pretty much perfect fit. However, it’s more of a starter conversation, as themes of body image, plastic surgery and race are just some of the themes that do come up when discussing Skims, and we can’t possibly cover everything in one episode. But the subject matter of Skims and why many black women feel uncomfortable about admitting they purchase them is definitely something that’s being talked about in certain circles, although so far, it’s not really being discussed by the masses. I invited my guest Darian Harvin to discuss Skims with me because she's one of the people pushing the conversation - she's a beauty reporter and the host of Beauty Headlines on Clubhouse and has hosted a Clubhouse centred specifically on Skims, that openly discussed why some black women often feel conflicted about supporting the brand.  In this episode, I wanted to find out how Darian herself feels as a Skims-wearing person and if she could share any feedback from the Clubhouse she hosted. We ended up talking about choice, information and opinions and I think this is definitely something we could return to in the future. I would love to know what you think; do you wear Skims, are you a fan of Kim – do you think we can separate a product from a person? Let me know over in the DMs and feel free to leave a voicenote at beautymepodcast on Instagram. I hope you enjoy! Be sure to check out Darian's newsletter here.
