Ep. 118: What is UK Black Girl Makeup? With Uche Natori, Funmi Monet and more

This week’s episode has been a while in the making and it all started with a voice note. My friend, beauty editor Ava Welsing-Kitcher, who recently moved to the US, told me how popular the UK Black Girl makeup look was becoming on TikTok and that I needed to take a look. A few hours later and I was hooked; not just on the makeup style itself, which we'll go into in this episode, but I loved the supportive comments shared between the US and UK creators. The two key names that came up over and over again when I started researching the trend that's racked up 38million views on TikTok, were that of Uche Natori and Melachild. Both creators are based in the UK and have been called the originators of the look that's centred on a highlighted under-eye and seamless blending. I invited both of them onto the pod and I'm  happy to say that Uche said yes and our ensuing conversation felt so refreshing and real. At no point did Uche take credit for anything; in fact she paid homage to the makeup artists of the '90s, to drag makeup techniques, makeup artists such as Makeup By Mario and Melachild herself and also commented that American women like makeup artist King Mali Magic are the ones who have long been influencing the trends. Also in this episode, I speak with Funmi Monet, a Dallas, Texas-based creator and therapist, about why she thinks American women are falling in love with  UK Black Girl makeup and there are also some clips from the inimitable Melachild and I share UK makeup artist @v A note: When I commented on social media that I was putting the episode together and that Uche was part of it, someone sent a screenshot of a 'post and delete' that the UK version of The Shade Room had shared (The Shade Room is like the online black version of a gossip magazine you might find in a supermarket - I think that's the best way I can describe it). In it Uche had commented that the 'clean girl look is low key anti-black' and said black women need 'coverage and structure'. As she deleted it, I'm guessing she realised it was a bit off, because when we spoke, she was very detailed about why black women might prefer fuller coverage for reasons such as hyperpigmentation. I'm mentioning it here in case any listeners thought I wasn't aware. I'm definitely aware but I feel what Uche has to say in this episode has more importance than what she posted. If you disagree then my DMs are always open @beautymepodcast or you can email me at beautymepodcast@gmail.com. Stay tuned to @beautymepodcast on Instagram and my TikTok @charissek because I'll be sharing some iconic video content too! Ep. 117: What's on my mind? Feeling guilty, feeling tired, Byoma skincare, beauty events, SPF and more...

This week it’s the episode that almost didn’t happen! I’ve been working on an episode that I think is going to be amazing, but when the time came to record it I was in bed with the worst period-related exhaustion. However, I still really wanted to check in with you, so this episode is kind of a catch up with my week.  Leading on from that feeling of exhaustion, I start by discussing how women are often the ones who grin and bear it in the work environment, and the burden of guilt we feel if we take any time out. In the episode I mention an article I'd read on why single and childless women are the ones feeling the brunt of the always-on post-pandemic culture the most. I couldn't remember the name of the article so here's a link to it: https://www.elle.com/life-love/a38988964/childless-women-toxic-jobs-overwork-pandemic-workaholics-2022/ From there I move on to Byoma skincare, which has actually been my Holy Grail in a week where my hormones were wreaking havoc all over my face and share my excitement at heading to beauty industry event Professional Beauty this weekend. Pro Beauty started out as a beauty industry magazine that turned into a 3-day annual event that sees global leaders host live events and seminars. If you're a beauty pro you can find out more information here: https://professionalbeauty.co.uk/site/newsdetails/get-pb-london-ready Finally I share some new products I've bought and that I'll be bringing you another SPF special soon. As always, I'd love to hear more from you. Let me know if you don't mind this more relaxed kind of episode and who you'd like to see on the show next. Feel free to email beautymepodcast@gmail.com or head to my DMs @beautymepodcast on Instagram or Twitter. Do please rate and review if you enjoy the show! See you next time. Ep. 116: Deep Dive into viral Euphoria product Nanoblur

This week it’s another Deep Dive and it’s a super specific episode dedicated to Nanoblur. Nanoblur is an award-winning product from the brand Indeed Labs and although it’s been around since 2011, it’s definitely seen a huge resurgence since Donni Davy, the head makeup designer on the MASSIVE show Euphoria, said that Nanoblur was a must on set. In this episode, as well as looking at how Donni and other influencers like to use the product, I'm also sharing a little bit of the history of the product. I'm also doing a LIVE reaction to me using Nanoblur for the first time, from when I first open the box to trying it over a full face of makeup.  I'd love to know if you’ve used Nanoblur yourself, so send me a DM over @beautymepodcast on Twitter or Instagram. Ep. 115: Why family is everything for Sephora Video Marketing Manager Natasha Maldonado

This week my guest is Natasha Maldonado, Video Marketing Manager at beauty mecca Sephora and freelance makeup artist. Born and bred in Los Angeles, Natasha is someone I’ve been following for a while because I love the insights she shares into her cultural background as a Latina. A major theme that came through in this interview was family; it's clear that Natasha's parents have had a major influence on her, in different ways, and even more so, her grandmother, 'Mamita'. At almost 98 years old, Mamita loves beauty shopping and chatter with Natasha and in this episode, her lust for life really shows through. Talking to Natasha I couldn't help but ask where she gets her confidence for appearing on camera, and where she got her very intentional approach to life from. Of course I also ask her how she bagged such an amazing job at Sephora! I feel like this is the kind of interview that will inspire anyone; not just those who love beauty. Thanks again for listening. Do follow Natasha on Instagram @makememaldonado and let me know your thoughts over on @beautymepodcast. As always I would love it if you could rate or review the show, especially if you enjoyed it! Ep. 114: What's next for Glossier? With TikTok business expert Dulma Altan

This week’s episode is all about Glossier; how it started and how it's going! If you've kept up with the beauty headlines lately, you'll know that on January 26th Glossier laid off a third of its staff, almost completely from its tech department. Of course the beauty and finance worlds instantly started speculating; what could be next? The Business of Fashion even did a whole webinar discussing 'the demise of Glossier' but really, I don't think it's that deep. In this episode I speak with the woman fast becoming the go-to for easy to digest TikTok content focused on finance, branding, strategy and more. In her TikTok bio @iamdulma describes her account as TikTok B school for women and she actually kind of predicted the potential pitfalls the brand might face back in November, so I had to invite her on to get her take on what's next for the $1.8billion brand. I also spoke with my friend and very aesthetically-minded Glossier fan @keisha_rachele to get her views as a consumer. This isn’t a clickbait episode and it’s not a bashing episode either; it’s me opening up a discussion, and I'd love for you to get involved too! You can either answer my Q&A on Spotify or drop me a DM over @beautymepodcast or email me beautymepodcast@gmail.com. What do you think is next? What would you like to see from Glossier? Or are you living in a country that the brand doesn't even ship to? Do you think this episode needs a part 2? Let me know! Big thank you to Dulma and Keisha and thank you for listening. Ep. 113: What's on my birthday beauty wish list?

This episode is a really indulgent one; it’s basically a list of all the makeup products I want for my birthday next week! No deep and meaningful conversation here but I still think this episode makes sense because it’s been a while since I’ve been this excited about beauty. Ep: 112: Perceptions of beauty with makeup artist and creator Aoife Cullen

This week’s guest is someone I’ve wanted to have on for a while. I have so much respect and admiration for Irish makeup artist and creator Aoife Cullen. The first time I discovered her on Instagram I was blown away by her eyebrows. They were and still are, super skinny, almost like slashes that she uses to frame her amazing looks. Looks inspired often by the runway – you have to check out her brilliant fashion-themed video content – but also by requests and suggestions from her followers on social media. Nothing is off-topic for Aoife, except perhaps anything that’s too traditionally pretty or beautiful. For me she’s this stunning alien-type creature, and I think she’s cool with that description.  Aoife’s based in London and I’m still doing most of my podcasts via Zoom, so I finally invited her onto the podcast because I wanted to be super nosy and delve into how she became the inspiration she is to so many. In this episode I ask Aoife about the recent backlash to Kanye West’s ex girlfriend Julia Fox’s high fashion black eye moment – let me know what you thought of the look; you can either email beautymepodcast@gmail.com or head over to my DMs at @beautymepodcast. I also wanted to find out how Aoife got her start in the makeup industry, what it means to feel like you don’t fit in and what her creative process entails. I hope you love it, be sure to follow Aoife on Instagram and TikTok. She also has her work account on Instagram too: https://www.instagram.com/aoifecullen.otherfaces/ As always it would be great if you could show support for the podcast by leaving a review or rating anywhere you like to listen. Ep. 111: Meet the Founder: Olamide Olowe of Topicals

This week it’s a new Meet the Founder episode. If you don’t already know, Meet the Founder always takes place first on Instagram Live. It’s a really great way for brand founders to connect with future founders and share their experiences. As it’s a live experience, the editing is minimal – so you might hear the odd glitch! But my guest’s advice makes it all worth it. As the founder and CEO of cult brand Topicals, California-based Olamide Olowe’s goal is very clear: she aims to analyse the culture and use science to create products that truly answer a need. So far products such as Faded and Like Butter have gained massive popularity purely for the fact that they actually do the work. As well as sharing her story from the beginning, Olamide also opens up about her spiritual side, and themes such as empathy, faith and joy come up regularly, as does her belief in finding the right people to build a successful team. She also hints that the brand is finally coming to the UK very soon! I can’t wait for that to happen and to see what’s next for the brand and Olamide herself; I really think she’s someone to watch when it comes to building the work environment of the future. I hope you enjoy it and do please tag me when you’re listening and be sure to follow @topicals on Instagram to find out more. Ep. 110: Talking diabetes with nurse and beauty creator Alanna Campbell

I don't know about you, but I've never really known anyone with diabetes. I've heard rumours that it runs in my family, and heard horror stories about terrible things that can happen if it goes untreated, but aside from that, I've been pretty ignorant. It wasn't until I started following YouTuber and NHS Gastroenterology and Liver Disease Nurse Alanna Campbell, that I began to realise that diabetes is actually an autoimmune disease that can be incredibly challenging. So I thought, why not bring Alanna onto the pod to discuss beauty and diabetes - and how her first pregnancy is affecting both!  In this episode Alanna shares how she has spent 20+ years living with diabetes, how YouTube started out as a form of talk therapy after the passing of her father, and why she won't ever create content just for the sake of it. Alanna is pretty much how you find her on her social platforms; open and honest and a little bit sarcastic. If we don't answer all of your questions on diabetes, be sure to get in touch over @beautymepodcast and you can find Alanna at @altogetheralanna on Instagram and YouTube. As always, it would be amazing if you could rate and review the podcast - you can do that on Apple and Spotify now! Did you know I also have a newsletter? Ep 109: Euphoria: Creating characters through makeup

This week’s episode was definitely a no-brainer for me. Last year I did a complete overview of the hair and makeup in the Netflix film Malcolm & Marie, and the lead actress, Zendaya is also a key character in HBO’s Euphoria. You know, that show that’s all about teen drama and has inspired makeup lovers around the world to create some amazing looks based on their favourite characters Maddy, Cassie, Rue, Kat and Jules. In this episode I talk about the looks makeup designer Doniella Davy created in the first season of Euphoria, and how she’s changing things up in season 2. Once again you can choose to listen or watch this episode on Spotify – if you watch you’ll get to see all the looks I talk about, and you also see the visual version on YouTube. I hope you enjoy it and if you’re watching on YouTube be sure to give it a thumbs-up, or if you’re listening please do rate and review. See you next time!
