Today’s '90s Beauty Moment is all about the striking beauty looks for En Vogue’s 1996 video for their single Don’t Let Go.
In this episode I break down the hair and beauty moments for all four band members: Cindy Herron, Dawn Robinson, Maxine Jones and Terry Ellis and I also get into the truly quintessential ‘90s fashion looks each of them are wearing.

Ep. 165: '90s Beauty Moments - ‘Black Barbie’ and Queen of Rap Lil’ Kim’s ‘90s beauty influence
For me, Lil’ Kim, AKA Kimberly Denise Jones, is someone who should get all the awards when it comes to being iconic across the board – the hairstyles you’ve played with, the makeup you’ve experimented with, even the clothes you’re wearing and the music you’re listening to – Lil’ Kim was arguably the blueprint for it all back in the ‘90s.
In this episode I’m firmly sticking with the Lil’ Kim of the ‘90s – one, because there’s a lot to discuss when it comes to the Brooklyn rapper, and two, because amongst all that information, there is also the often discussed topic of her lack of self love, which some even refer to as internalised hate for how she looks.
So in this episode I’m focusing on the image that first caught our attention, and how she would go on to influence her fans, the music industry and the fashion houses.
I’ll be back with another in-depth episode though, so watch this space. In the meantime, I’d love to know what you think of this series – have you been enjoying it?

Ep. 164: '90s Beauty Moments - Jennifer Aniston’s iconic haircut – The ‘Rachel’ from Friends
It’s a hairstyle that has its own Wikipedia page; that’s how iconic the Rachel haircut was. It was first seen on screen, on Aniston’s character Rachel Green in Friends in 1995, near the end of the first season in the episode entitled The One with the Evil Orthodontist and she wore it until the third season.
In this episode I focus on how big the influence of the cut was, and why Jennifer’s longterm hairdresser Chris McMillan designed it specifically for the star – even though she never loved it!
I’d love to know what you think of this series – have you been enjoying it?

Ep. 163: '90s Beauty Moments - Skin from Skunk Anansie’s iconic bald-headed beauty
Skunk Anansie is a British rock band that shot to fame in the ‘90s, and from day one, all everyone could talk about was the striking lead singer, Skin, AKA Deborah Ann Dyer.
While I knew Skin had to be in this ‘90s series, I initially thought that I would be more focused on her more edgy makeup looks, like black lipstick and liner, but recently I saw the video for one of their hits, Hedonism (Just Because You Feel Good) and I was blown away by a really pretty, ethereal take on ‘90s makeup. It’s not something you see much of when you examine the music videos of that decade, so I really wanted to include it in the series.
I’d love to know what you think too! Have you been enjoying this series?

Ep. 162: '90s Beauty Moments - Uma Thurman’s trend-setting beauty as Mia Wallace in 1994’s Pulp Fiction
Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is dedicated to the star of one of my all-time favourite films; Uma Thurman in 1994’s Pulp Fiction.
In this Quentin Tarantino classic, Uma plays newlywed Mia Wallace who’s definitely in the mood for trouble, and looks so good while doing it. The movie set off several beauty trends, and it also helped to catapult the success of Chanel’s Rouge Noir nail polish – the beauty brand’s biggest-selling product ever.

Ep. 161: '90s Beauty Moments - RnB singer Toni Braxton's 1993 Pixie haircut
Coupled with her deep contralto tones, RnB singer Toni Braxton's short hair became an iconic inspiration for black women the world over in 1993, and it's a look that she still wears today. In this episode I discuss the impact the Pixie cut had throughout the '90s, why Toni's take on the trend has been so enduring and why the Pixie cut is still a stylish go-to today.

Ep. 160: '90s Beauty Moments - Janet Jackson's Poetic Justice braids from the 1993 film
If you’re someone who ever gets your hair braided, then you will know exactly what this episode is about. Box braids have been a black girl go-to for decades, well, actually, thousands of years! But in 1993, when Boyz N The Hood director John Singleton wrote and directed Poetic Justice, he definitely had no idea that the most enduring conversation around this movie would arrive via his female star, singer Janet Jackson and her hair.
In this mini episode I break down the origin of so-called Poetic Justice braids and discuss how braided styles have been integral to not only black style, but also how tribes communicate who they are, where they're from and so much more.
Let me know what you think of this episode - have you seen Poetic Justice? Get in touch over in the DMs on Twitter or Instagram @beautymepodcast or email me your thoughts at beautymepodcast@gmail.com.

Ep. 159: '90s Beauty Moments - Sade Adu and the original 'clean girl' aesthetic
If you're up on your social media trends, then you'll be familiar with the less-is-more vibe of the 'clean girl aesthetic' trend, but for many black and brown women, it's simply a more natural, pared-down approach to beauty that they have been enjoying for decades.
Despite many a content creator labelling the likes of Bella Hadid and Hailey Beiber as the originators of the 'clean girl' trend, for me, the original clean girl has to be Sade, lead singer of her eponymous band. Folasade Adu is a Nigerian-born British singer known for her velvety tones and clean beauty aesthetic - think red lip, hair in a bun and a pair of gold hoop earrings. In this episode I discuss the look and also touch on the concept of black beauty creators not always being given credit for starting new trends, in fashion, beauty or social media.
There is also a video to really show you what I'm talking about, which you can find on the @beautymepodcast Instagram or on my TikTok @charissekenion. In fact for each of these 25 '90s Beauty Moments podcasts there's a matching video!

Ep. 158: '90s Beauty Moments - Mary J Blige, Queen of Hip Hop soul and black beauty icon
If you love ‘90s makeup AND rnb then you need to check out today’s 90s Beauty Moment; I'm talking about Mary J Blige, AKA the Queen of Hip Hop Soul and an absolute icon for black women around the world when it came to hair, beauty and fashion throughout the '90s.
Between 1992 and 1999 Mary released 4 albums and with each album came new looks and new inspiration. Mary absolutely deserves her own full-length episode, so stay tuned for that! In the meantime, let me know, are you a Mary J fan? Or is this the first time you're hearing about her? Ep. 157: '90s Beauty Moments - Demi Moore's nude pregnant body on the cover of Vanity Fair's August 1991 issue
Thirty years ago the image of a naked pregnant woman on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine caused outrage around the world. While it absolutely impacted how the pregnant body was seen, in this episode I question if we've really come that far.
Today, the likes of Serena Williams and Rihanna have publicly embraced their baby bumps for the covers of Vogue and Vanity Fair, respectively, but yet, for every positive comment, there's always someone saying they feel disgusted and that a pregnant body is not something that 'should' be on show.
