Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about one of my favourite fashion designers, ever. Whenever I think about Alexander McQueen’s work I can’t help but get emotional. He was a designer who could find beauty in the darkest moments, and his No.13 show was full of light and dark. The show is very well-known, mostly because of the finale, which sees model Shalom Harlow wearing a dress that’s being spray painted by two robots. But for me, there’s an even more impactful moment; the first time we see a model, who happens to be Paralympic athlete Aimee Mullins, wearing prosthetic legs on the catwalk. Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about Brooklyn-born Foxy Brown, AKA Inga Marchand, one of the first ladies of hip-hop. She was first seen on our screens in a video for LL Cool J’s I Shot Ya remix video in 1995 and from then on her style and lyricism evolved. In this episode I break down the retro looks we see in this film that’s based in the ‘80s, from the hair and makeup pros to my favourite beauty moments from the film. Aaliyah Dana Haughton released her second album, also called One In A Million in 1996 and with six hit songs coming from that album, it’s at that point in time that she really took over the charts and became a major inspiration for young black girls when it came to how they dressed and how they wore their hair and makeup. For me, Lil’ Kim, AKA Kimberly Denise Jones, is someone who should get all the awards when it comes to being iconic across the board – the hairstyles you’ve played with, the makeup you’ve experimented with, even the clothes you’re wearing and the music you’re listening to – Lil’ Kim was arguably the blueprint for it all back in the ‘90s. In this episode I’m firmly sticking with the Lil’ Kim of the ‘90s – one, because there’s a lot to discuss when it comes to the Brooklyn rapper, and two, because amongst all that information, there is also the often discussed topic of her lack of self love, which some even refer to as internalised hate for how she looks. So in this episode I’m focusing on the image that first caught our attention, and how she would go on to influence her fans, the music industry and the fashion houses. It’s a hairstyle that has its own Wikipedia page; that’s how iconic the Rachel haircut was. It was first seen on screen, on Aniston’s character Rachel Green in Friends in 1995, near the end of the first season in the episode entitled The One with the Evil Orthodontist and she wore it until the third season. In this episode I focus on how big the influence of the cut was, and why Jennifer’s longterm hairdresser Chris McMillan designed it specifically for the star – even though she never loved it!
