Ep. 182: Lies and lashes! Doja Cat’s lash-less Schiaparelli red moment and Mikayla Nogueira’s ‘fake’ mascara ad
What a week it’s been – the beauty community can’t stop talking about lashes. First, we had Doja Cat’s Doja’s Inferno red makeup moment created by the iconic makeup artist Pat McGrath, only to hear critics say, w’hy isn’t she wearing lashes?’
Then we had beauty creator Mikayla Nogueira’s quite unbelievable mascara ad for L’Oréal’s Telescopic Lift causing TikTok trauma.
I’d love to know what you think – should Mikayla release a statement? Can she come out of this with her authenticity as an influencer intact? You can get in touch in my DMs at @beautymepodcast on Instagram and Twitter and of course I’m also on TikTok. Also, did you know that you can now listen to BeautyMe on Amazon Music? Wherever you listen, I would really love if you could hit that subscribe or like button. Feel free to leave a 5-star rating over on Spotify, or write a review on Apple Podcasts. Don’t forget there’s also my newsletter beautymenotes.substack.com where I often share imagery from each episode. Thank you so much for listening. If you want to skip straight to the Mikayla story you will find it around the 19.11 mark.

Ep. 181: Beauty Bio: The importance of ‘90s model Jenny Shimizu when it comes to race and sexuality
At just 5ft 6 with a slight, toned build, American model Jenny Shimizu looked more like a car mechanic than a runway model – because that’s exactly what she was when she was discovered. She refers to herself as a ‘gay Japanese mechanic with short hair and tattoos’ and never planned a career in modelling or acting but by doing exactly that she became a poster girl for young, queer Asian women who had never really seen themselves in the media before.
I’d love to know what you think – and I’d love to know if you have a favourite model from any era that you’d like me to focus on in a future episode. You can get in touch in my DMs at @beautymepodcast on Instagram and Twitter and there's a video all about Jenny over on my Instagram and my TikTok @charissekenion.
Also, did you know that you can now listen to BeautyMe on Amazon Music? Wherever you listen, I would really love if you could hit that subscribe or like button. Ep. 180: ‘Ageless’ supermodel Kate Moss for Marc Jacobs – another rant about retouching
In this episode I take a closer look at the latest ad campaign from supermodel Kate Moss and question the motives behind the extreme retouching and possible use of AI filters in the video and photography.
It’s a Kate we’ve never seen before and I wonder if the entire Marc Jacobs campaign is focused on nostalgia, because Kate and Marc have been working together for three decades.
I’d love to know what you think – perhaps you think there’s no harm in retouching or perhaps you yourself regularly retouch your imagery. Feel free to get in touch in my DMs – there’s no judgement there! You can find me at @beautymepodcast on Instagram and Twitter and I’m also on TikTok @charissekenion. Ep. 179: Is wearing makeup to the gym bad for our skin?
This episode is a discussion on wearing makeup to the gym – I’ll ask questions around it but during this chat I’ll be asking: is wearing makeup to the gym hygienic? Is it gross? Will it clog your pores? Or is it just none of my business? As well as asking questions I share some recent stats on women wearing makeup to the gym and I also share some expert tips on how to wear makeup at the gym, thanks to makeup artist and esthetician Katie Onyejekwe.

Ep. 178: My beauty predictions for Spring/Summer 2023 - from goth glam and soft flush to alien makeup and bleached brows
It’s the first episode of a brand new year and I’m starting off by sharing my top 5 beauty and hair predictions for the first part of 2023 as well as my personal favourite makeup look right now using some new products I’m loving. I’m not bringing in skincare because I can do that in a separate episode – I wanted this to purely be about how I see us all adorning our faces and hair for spring.
Let me know which spring beauty trends you’re leaning into over in the DMs on Instagram or Twitter @beautymepodcast or drop a comment over on my tiktok for this episode over @charissekenion. Ep. 177: '90s Beauty Moments - Mariah Carey’s two iconic looks from the 1999 video for Heartbreaker
It’s the final installment of this ‘90s beauty moments Advent Calendar – whew! Initially I was thinking it should be a tiny bit Christmassy, and I was going to focus on Mariah Carey’s epic All I Want for Christmas, but, I knew we’d likely be bombarded with the song all month-long, so instead I picked a song of hers that I actually liked, with a video that saw her playing with two very ‘90s looks.

Ep. 176: '90s Beauty Moments - the video for Destiny’s Child single Say My Name
Full disclaimer; this is slightly outside of my designated era of the 90s; while the single Say My Name came out in October 1999, Destiny’s Child didn’t release a video for it until January 2000. So, technically, this video shouldn’t be here! But I’m hoping I’m forgiven as I’m so close to the end of this Advent Calendar series.
In this episode I share some of the drama behind the scenes of this colourful video and break down the band members and their looks.

Ep. 175: '90s Beauty Moments - Isabella Rossellini as Lisle Von Rhuman in 1992’s Death Becomes Her
In this 1992 hit movie there are several big stars – Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn. All three put in amazing performances, but for me, the biggest star is former model Isabella Rossellini. Without giving the plot away, she plays a socialite and sorceress, Lisle Von Rhuman, who has powers and potions that promise eternal youth and immortality and she is one of the most glamorous characters I’ve ever seen.
In this episode I share why Lisle’s character is the star of this film, even though she’s only on our screens for just 15 minutes.

Ep. 174: '90s Beauty Moments - the impact of Carrie Bradshaw and Sex and the City
Season 1 of Sex and the City aired in June 1998 and it was pretty much an instant hit. The show had four female leads in the form of Cynthia Nixon, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Sarah Jessica Parker which meant the audience could enjoy four different personalities and styles – and everyone had a favourite.
In this episode I share who’s my favourite and why!

Ep. 173: '90s Beauty Moments - prosthetics on the catwalk; Alexander McQueen’s No.13 show with Paralympic athlete Aimee Mullins
Today’s ‘90s Beauty Moment is all about one of my favourite fashion designers, ever. Whenever I think about Alexander McQueen’s work I can’t help but get emotional. He was a designer who could find beauty in the darkest moments, and his No.13 show was full of light and dark.
The show is very well-known, mostly because of the finale, which sees model Shalom Harlow wearing a dress that’s being spray painted by two robots. But for me, there’s an even more impactful moment; the first time we see a model, who happens to be Paralympic athlete Aimee Mullins, wearing prosthetic legs on the catwalk.
