And full disclosure we get one too! http://www.trading212.com/promocodes/FTSE ► Episode Notes: Who’s been for a round of jabs this week? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! Steve and Steve are talking this week about house prices, share prices, and bank accounts. There’s a lot to get through! Starting off, though, it’s been a good week for Steve D, who’s up ahead of the S&P 500. Not such a good week for Steve W – but what went wrong after such a positive start? Warren Buffett wrote his first shareholder letter without Charlie Munger. And while a lot of the focus is on the role that Berkshire’s builder played in the firm’s development, Steve W is looking elsewhere… Steve D has been looking – or listening – in a different direction. If becoming an ISA millionaire sounds attractive, then what better way to figure out how to do it than by listening to some that have done it before? Both Steves currently bank with Chase. There’s a lot to like about it, but is the new cashback programme part of that list? With cashback now set at 1% on a £1,500 qualifying deposit, the incentives seem to be getting worse and worse. But where else could they store their excess cash? Rightmove announced earnings at the end of this week. The stock initially fell 4% before launching a recovery to end the day ahead of where it started. The earnings look reasonable enough, but the big question is what to make of a challenge from a big US competitor. Steve D has an answer – and he’s not convinced… Over in the US, cybersecurity firm Okta has exploded higher after its recent earnings. The firm has turned profitable and growth looks like it’s going to be strong for a while to come.  Steve D owns this one and Steve W doesn’t. But with a sense of cash flows coming in, could the show’s value-driven investor be tempted to something here? Croda International has had a difficult 2023 with inventory levels much too high for falling demand in the end markets it supplies. So it’s no surprise profits were down sharply. There’s clearly a cyclical slump going on, but the question is when will it end? Steve W doesn’t know the answer, but more worryingly, neither does Croda’s management… Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► What We Consumed This Week: ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Bankers, Jet Engines & Nvidia

And full disclosure we get one too! http://www.trading212.com/promocodes/FTSE ► Episode Notes: Who’s been looking at trees in foreign countries? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! Steve and Steve have a UK theme to their show this week. But there’s always room for Nvidia, which keeps blowing the lid off things with its earnings… In consumption news, Steve W’s been getting cross at someone who doesn’t know what the word ‘subjective’ means. And Steve D’s been googling the S&P 500’s top-performing stocks since January. Lloyds Banking Group reported earnings this week and they were… fine. Profits were up for the year, but down in the fourth quarter – a sign of things to come? It’s clearly been a good 2023 for Lloyds, but the question is what are they going to do with the cash? Share buybacks and a dividend boost are on the horizon, but is there a catch? Somehow, Barclays managed to post a net loss in the fourth quarter of 2023. But that’s because there’s a huge non-cash charge for a restructuring programme they’re embarking on.  The company is looking at bringing down its head count by 20%. And those savings mean there are big shareholder returns being promised over the next few years. NatWest posted weaker margins than either Lloyds or Barclays in 2023. But the stock is cheap and it might be getting cheaper later this year. Jeremy Hunt is planning on selling off the 35% stake in the company that the UK government still owns. Steve W is confused, though, about whether the shares will be going cheap or not… Rolls-Royce has been blazing ahead over the last year or so and leading the FTSE 100 higher. The company’s earnings report on Thursday offered investors a chance to check in. Steve W has been looking at the stock and thought it had further to run. On the grounds that the business might be heading for £3bn in annual free cash flow, he thought it might be a buy… Steve D’s been looking at Nvidia’s earnings. Analysts were pessimistic going in and at a massive P/E ratio, that was looking like a problem. No need to worry, though – the business blazed through expectations and continued on the move. And CEO Jensen Huang thinks this is the inflection point for AI, which means there could be more to come. This week, Steve and Steve have a varied lineup of stuff to talk about. Starting with what they’ve been listening to – and there are some very familiar themes. Steve D has been back in Morgna Housel mode and Steve W has been listening to Warren Buffett. Is cash king, trash, or both of the above? We’ve also got news from Trading 212 – they’re a step closer to becoming a bank. Whether or not that’s the long-term plan, there’s a card in the offing and it’s got some nice cashback associated with it… Steve D’s already on the wait list, so how long will he be sitting around for? And is now the right time for Steve W, or is he still concentrating on rounding up his NatWest account by buying Dairy Milks from Sainsbury’s? It’s official: the UK is in a recession – or at least, it was at the end of 2023. But should Steve and Steve be worried about this as investors with stocks exposed to the country’s economy?  The drop in GDP is pretty shallow, but it’s not entirely clear that it won’t get worse. Steve D has an eye on the construction industry, though, so what’s he been seeing? Another week, another round of victory laps for Steve D. Publishing company Bloomsbury has been updating its update and things are going better than expected. The company has a lot of top sellers, but which one has Steve W been buying? And are investors in danger of focusing on what the company doesn’t own and missing the value in what it does? Kraft Heinz reported earnings for Q4 and the full year of 2023. The short story is that things have faltered towards the end of an otherwise impressive year. With a buyback on the way, Steve W sees the investment thesis he’s been looking at for some time playing out nicely. But the stock is going the wrong way, so what’s going on here? Steve and Steve have a lot to get through this week. One of them has had a quiet week in the markets, but the other one has been tearing things up.  Staying invested is important – miss the best days and you miss most of the returns. Steve D has been absolutely smashing the ball out of the park recently, so what’s been winning for him? In the long term, the stock market is a weighing machine, in the short term, it’s a voting machine. But how long do investors have to wait before the voting gives way to the weighing? We’ve also got everyone’s favourite topic – money market funds. What are they, why are some different from others, and why might investors like us want to put our cash in them? One of our users has asked how we think about our finances now that we’re both parents. So why does Steve W refuse to rely on the government for child benefit? Disney shares are roaring higher as the company gets its streaming costs under control. But is the new sports investment a huge win, or snatching defeat from the jaws of victory? Adyen is back – did it ever really go away? Rumours of the company’s death have been greatly exaggerated, and Steve D is here to explain why… With UK share prices where they are, there’s a chance of M&A activity. But Steve W has been looking at two companies looking to expand together with some internal UK acquisition. Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! It's been a mighty week in the stock market, with a lot of the world's biggest companies reporting earnings. But we've got a much more exciting announcement to kick things off... After that, it's time to get into the business of discussing stocks. Apple shares slipped after earnings this week, but should investors be worried about weak revenues from China, or positive on a rapidly-growing services business? Amazon's earnings report was much more enthusiastically received. The company announced decent growth in both its AWS segment and its online advertising, so is the company still one to keep on the buying radar? The stock market didn't like Alphabet's report quite so much. But is that just because the company hasn't announced a dividend, or were its numbers really that much worse than those put out my Amazon, Meta, and Microsoft. Lastly, we're looking at Deckers -- who cares if it's a difficult time for consumer cyclicals, it's a tech stock like everything else. Earnings Blast! LVMH, Netflix, ASML & Tesla

► Episode Notes: What do Vietnamese bridges have to do with semiconductors? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! It’s been an interesting week in the stock market. Both Steves have been rallying well, with a boost from a surprising UK stock that we’ve been quietly buying, but  haven’t mentioned on the show before. Steve W isn’t trusting this market rally, though. Could stronger earnings really be a bad thing for share prices with the central banks looking at a possible recession and interest rate cuts? LVMH reported earnings this week and the stock is going strong. As Steve W looks at the price of a new watch, Steve D has the details around the company’s structure, brands, and growth prospects. Netflix continues to power on adding subscribers to its base. Steve D’s been looking at a chart that indicates there’s some way to go and Steve W has been considering the WWE licensing deal.  Dutch chip manufacturer ASML continues to go from strength to strength. It’s going to be a long time before the company gets to the end of its current order book, but should investors worry about the China situation? It’s hard to say that things are going well at Tesla at the moment. Great news for Steve D’s start-of-year prediction, but Steve W thinks investors have been getting the news wrong lately… Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► Chip War Book: https://amzn.to/497oaPX ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Our Best & Worst Stocks, BP & Shell To Merge? & Buffett Should Buy Boeing!?

► Episode Notes: What’s been happening to the price of butter? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! It’s been a tough week for the stock market, especially on the UK side. Inflation has been weighing on both the FTSE 100 and the FTSE 250.  There’s also an interesting set of developments for oil and commodities, but where does this mean we should be looking for stocks to buy? Steve and Steve have the same sector in mind? Steve and Steve are fielding questions about the winners and losers from their stock portfolios. There’s also a rant about antifragility, what it is and what it isn’t that you probably don’t want to miss! Steve W’s top loser is a dividend stock that might be a surprise. But there’s no surprise about Steve D’s biggest winner – anyone that’s been watching the show will know which one it is by now… Normally we talk about things we’ve been reading/listening to/engaging with. This week, Steve D has a full-blown Blinkist summary of ‘The Fund’ – it just keeps on giving.  With Boeing shares down, Steve W has been revising his notes on the Business Breakdown podcast covering the stock. But is this his opportunity or Someone else’s? Warren Buffett has been looking for an acquisition opportunity for ages. Steve D thinks the Berkshire Hathaway CEO ought to just get on with the business of buying Boeing outright.  The Berkshire Hathaway CEO has a huge cash pile. But Steve W has some hesitations with the idea of buying something of Boeing’s size and scale.  Steve D is on a 2-3 part series on stocks he’s looking at. Part 1 was on Progyny and the next part is right here – it’s on Clearwater Analytics. The stock is growing quickly and strongly and it looks like the margins are going to come through. There’s a bit of a question mark over the company’s market cap, though.  Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► What We Consumed This Week: ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? ► Episode Notes: Who’s underperformed Steve D, Steve W, and the S&P 500? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! With earnings coming through from the US banks, Steve and Steve are thinking about the next few weeks and months. Both are sharing their thoughts on stocks and investing this week. Steve D has been thinking about scandals, Ponzi schemes and central banking in Lebanon. There’s a great 25 minute podcast (not ours) for someone else to listen to this week. Steve W has been taking a look at Terry Smith’s annual letter to investors. There’s a lot in it, in terms of an outlook on AI, a view on investment fees, and some insights on buying stocks at high P/E ratios. Are covered call ETFs something that either Steve would consider investing in? Probably not, but Steve W has an overview of the concept and Steve D has some reasons for sticking to equities, rather than moving into options via an ETF. Progyny is a stock that both Steves have looked at before. But Steve D thinks things have been coming along over the last few years and the stock looks like a viable investment – is there anything to dislike about the company, or is this one of the opportunities of the year? After that it’s on to Rolls-Royce. Steve W has been looking at the FTSE 100’s top-performing stock from 2023 – after a huge rally could it still be undervalued? Next up, Steve D has been looking for stocks from different sectors. He’s got the analyst consensus on which industries people are bullish on for 2024 – but do our podcasters agree? We’ve also been tackling a listener question on Wickes. It’s popular with a certain kind of social media value investor, but has Steve W seen something in the metrics that they haven’t? Predictions Old & New! + New Years Resolutions

► Episode Notes: Why will Steve W be buying Wispa bars in 2024? Find out on this week's PlayingFTSE Show! It's the end of 2023, which means it's time to review our predictions for the year and make some new ones for 2024. How did we do and what will happen? All of us thought house prices were going to come down. We were wrong about how much, though, so what happened to stop the freefall? Paul did annoyingly well with his predictions. Thankfully, he isn't here to tell us about this, so Steve W reviews the surge in big tech and Disney's dividend from the year gone by… Steve D did less well by backing against Tesla, but had more joy calling positively against a recession. He wouldn't do that again, though… would be? The lack of a recession hit Steve W’s predictions and Coinbase went the opposite way to where he forecasted it. Surely he wouldn't go for that again, though? In 2024 predictions, we're bullish on low-cost businesses and doubtful on expensive consumer discretionaries. And we've got our resolutions for the New Year to go through. Thanks to everyone that's been with us over the last 12 months. Here's wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year.
