Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! Steve and Steve have a mixed bag to discuss this week. There are earnings, stocks, and new products to discuss! Jim Simons – the best in the business to do it – died this week. Steve and Steve reflect on someone who generated better returns in a bad year than either of them does in a good year.. Then it’s on to Disney. The stock didn’t take hugely well to the company’s earnings – but the report wasn’t all that bad and a lot of the negative news was already known about. The upcoming release list from Disney looks solid, rather than spectacular, with a number of familiar names getting another go around. Is this a sign or strong intangibles, or underinvestment in growth and innovation? Steve W has been looking at Greggs – a favourite of Steve D. With a plausible growth progression to 3,000 UK stores, it looks like there’s still more to come. A P/E ratio of 20 makes things look a little expensive, though. But could this be a stock that Paul would have gone for if he hadn’t been around. Progyny has had a tougher week, falling sharply after its latest earnings report. But has Steve D been taking advantage of a potential buying opportunity? With the cost of living high at the moment, there’s been a little bit of a falling off in terms of demand, as people put off starting families. But Steve W thinks this won’t last forever. We haven’t talked about Porvair much on the show. Steve W thinks this is a mistake and wants to take a closer look at the UK small cap filtration company. With a strong moat and a dominant position in some niche markets, there’s enough to like. But is the enormous focus on ESG in its investor communications a red flag? AirBnB comes with some highly attractive characteristics. And while the underlying business looks very strong, Steve and Steve have different ideas for the company’s take rate. There’s a lot of negative sentiment around the stock and the company. But is this an opportunity? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! Steve and Steve are talking about earnings this week. But before we do that, we have a link from our latest friends at Finchat.io. Steve W burned through all of his free questions doing research this week, so a discount on a subscription might be handy. If you’d like one, too, check out our link! Shares in Apple have gone racing higher this week as the company announced its latest earnings report. It was bad, but the main theme for investors is the news it wasn’t worse. Services revenue reached record highs and this propped up margins after product sales fell. But this can’t go on forever – so what’s on the cards for the company? Amazon stock got a bit of a boost after its earnings this week. Higher revenue was turbocharged by wider margins to send earnings per share soaring. The business is firing on most cylinders, but is the stock a buy? Steve and Steve give their views on the subject. We don’t talk about MasterCard often on the PlayingFTSE podcast, but we probably should. It’s a terrific business with a huge moat and massive returns on invested capital. Steve D’s been looking into the latest earnings. Is this the one that got away for both Steves, or could there still be an opportunity even at today’s prices? MercadoLibre shares jumped 8% after earnings this week. A weak performance in Argentina was more than offset by strong growth in Brazil and Mexico. The stock looks like a bargain at around 15 times free cash flow. But Steve W thinks this is a highly misleading statistic… Starbucks has been struggling with getting people through the door, especially in China. There’s nothing unusual about that, but the stock still fell sharply. Is a triple-shot-double-pump strategy the right way to go? Or is it the most ridiculous thing we’ve ever discussed? Earnings, earnings and do we really need 24/7 Trading?

And full disclosure we get one too! http://www.trading212.com/promocodes/FTSE ► Episode Notes: Who’s accidentally thrown their emergency fund at the stock market? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! After a few false starts, Steve and Steve are finally in to talk about the big stories from this week… and Google paying a dividend. We’re talking stocks we like and there’s been a lot going on. The New York Stock Exchange is considering the possibility of allowing 24-hour trading. Would this be a welcome move? Steve D is concerned about thinning liquidity by stretching trades out throughout the day. Steve W mostly just wants a lunch break like they have in China. Shares in Meta Platforms fell sharply as the company announced what looked like a decent set of earnings. Revenues, margins, and profits were all higher – except for the metaverse. The stock had been doing well since the start of the year, so is this just things correcting? Or are there concerns for investors looking ahead to Q2 with the company’s guidance? Alphabet shares jumped after the company’s latest earnings announcement. But it’s not just because the firm announced it is going to start paying a dividend… is it? There was plenty more for investors to be pleased about, with strong growth in advertising and Google cloud. And a 10% jump brings the stock in line with Meta since the start of the year… Payment processor Adyen has had an up-and-down journey over the last few quarters. This one was a down – the stock fell as news of a declining take rate caused investors concern. Steve D thinks the market is getting this one wrong, though. Pulling in margins to boost revenues is nothing new, so is there a buying opportunity as investors send the share price lower? Unilever’s transition continues and its latest trading update caught Steve W’s attention. The business is showing growth in all the right places and the stock reflected this with a 5% jump. The company hasn’t yet spun off its ice cream brands, so there’s a question of what investors should hope for there. But impressive revenue growth from its beauty division is surely an encouraging sign… Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► What We Consumed This Week: 0:00 Introduction & Portfolios!  8:38  Consumption 17:21 24 Hour Trading 24:29 META 34:57 ALPHABET  48:47 ADYEN 1:02:06 UNILEVER Bloomstran: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak4on5uTaTg Finchat.io: https://finchat.io/pricing/?referralCode=4vfIndN0xYcpLhwICrLt5l9cjtI2 Frontman Energy: https://youtu.be/G4ZMxNYjuJI?si=mweResXDHtfYF_Lx  ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Steve and Steve are back to talk about things that have been happening this week. They’ve been looking at stocks from the UK, the EU, and the US – not many have been doing well. Steve D has been listening to Patrick Boyle this week. There’s a huge straight line city being built in Saudi Arabia – is that a good idea? Steve W has been reading The Wolf of Harcourt Street’s write-up of MercadoLibre. Having talked about the stock a couple of weeks ago, did he learn anything interesting? It’s earnings season in the US and – as usual – things have been kicking off with the banks. Steve W has the general overview. With investment banking up, loans flat, and charge-offs almost doubling, the outlook for the US is interesting. But which banks would the Steves buy at today’s prices. Since it emerged on the public markets, Dr. Martens has been flinging profit warnings around like they’re sponsored. And they’ve launched another one lately. The stock is down 30% as a result, following a boost on takeover optimism. But do Steve and Steve think things are actually going wrong for the company, or is this an overreaction? Shares in UK payment processor Wise have been falling lately as well. That’s despite higher revenues, profits and solid customer growth over the last few months. Is Steve D concerned? Not really. Should he be? That’s another question… ASML shares have also subsided as demand starts to normalise for its fancy semiconductor machines. The company still has a huge order backlog, though, for the next few years. Is this a buying opportunity in a company with a monopoly on an important growing industry? Or is there something else going on here? And full disclosure we get one too! http://www.trading212.com/promocodes/FTSE ► Episode Notes: What is Steve D doing with his Southern Copper investment? Find out on this week’s PlayingFTSE Show! Paradoxically, it’s the start of a new year and the year is three months in. So it’s time for the Steves to take a look at their portfolios and reflect on what they’ve been buying and selling. After three months, we’re looking at someone else’s first quarter. Earnings might not be out yet, but Tesla has reported its vehicle deliveries from the first three months of the year. On the face of it, the numbers aren’t terribly impressive. Despite cutting prices, the company still produced significantly more cars than it sold between January and March. This shouldn’t be a huge surprise, but it isn’t good news. But with the stock having fallen sharply since the start of the year, is it in buying territory for Steve W yet? Steve D has had an interesting first quarter. His portfolio has done a solid job, but he’s also been buying and selling as he reshuffles his investments when opportunities present themselves. If you thought the Playing FTSE Show’s growth enthusiast only buys growth stocks, you’d be dead wrong. He’s got an update on a FTSE 100 company in his portfolio and Pfizer. Looking ahead, Steve is focusing on houses. D.R. Horton to build them, Mid America Apartment Communities to lease them, and Enphase to stick solar panels on top of them. In some ways, Steve W has been busy and in others he’s been sitting tight. The PlayingFTSE Show’s valuation advocate has only sold two stocks – but one of them was his biggest investment. Last week, Steve teased a new stock for his portfolio that he’s been buying – that stock is… Endeavour Mining. The FTSE 250 miner has been catching his attention as the gold price rises. In terms of what he’s buying next, well, Steve doesn’t have much in mind. There’s lots he likes, not much he loves, and he’s got an eye on a couple of growth stocks for the new ISA season. But more importantly, it’s the end of Q1 and the new financial year is approaching – so there's lots for Steve and Steve to talk about on this week’s show! This week, in consumption news, Steve D has been listening to the Wall Street Journal’s piece on Cava. Steve W has been finding out about the situation at Boeing from Wall Street Millennial. Diploma is a stock that Steve W has been owned before and we have a viewer question on the stock. A recent acquisition has caused the share price to jump 10%. There’s a lot to like about the business, but the stock comes with a heavy price tag. That’s different from the valuations at which it acquires businesses, though. Forterra is a stock that both Steves do own and the company has released earnings this week. Steve W thought it was bad at first sight, but what does the show’s building expert think? Net debt is up a lot, but the business is still paying a dividend. With brick dispatches down 30%, can things get any worse, or is this the start of a recovery? It’s been a long time since 2020 and we haven’t talked about MercadoLibre much during that time. Steve W thinks the stock is due another look, though. The stock is still where it was, but the underlying business has made good progress. So has the value equation shifted for investors? It’s all stocks this week, as Steve and Steve look at the news from the UK and the US. Don’t worry about Apple or inflation, there’s plenty else to talk about… The big story from this week is Reddit’s IPO. The stock jumped out to a good start after it first appeared on the public markets, but Steve and Steve are looking under the hood. Is the best angle for investors an advertising platform, or a company with some valuable AI data? And is the underlying business ever going to make any money after nearly two decades without a profit? Unilever has announced plans to spin its ice cream division off. The unit has five of the top 10 brands by sales, so the move might be a little surprising. Steve W’s been taking a closer look, though. And the real question on his mind isn’t whether ditching Ben & Jerry’s is a good idea, but what the company plans to do with the cash… The market does not like Nike’s earnings report very much. Slowing sales in China are really weighing on the share price and catching the attention of both Steves. Could this be an opportunity in a company that has a strong track record and almost never trades at a discount? Or is that rainbow England flag just too much to bear? Shares in J.D. Wetherspoon fell 8% after the company’s most recent trading update. And with earnings per share down around 50%, that seems to make sense.  Steve W thinks there’s more to the company than this, though. But is a free cash outflow over the last six months more of a problem? The Lululemon share price has been falling sharply after a disappointing earnings report. Neither of the Steves are big fans of the brand, but the stock might be another question. How should we think about the value of this type of brand? And is this a dip that’s worth buying for either Steve? Only on this week’s PlayingFTSE Podcast! ► Support the show: Appreciate the show and want to offer your support? Steve and Steve have some interesting things to talk about this week – most notably from our friends at Trading212! What’s in the works and what’s on the launchpad? Steve D has been listening to an interesting new podcast. It’s Rory Stewart’s book, which you might not expect from Hull’s most prominent investor… Steve W has been listening to the Business Breakdowns episode on D.R. Horton. With some interesting insights into US housebuilding, is there anything that UK investors can take from it? One of our regular contributors has been asking about our retirement plans. There’s a natural tendency to shift towards defensives, utilities, and bonds when the time comes to stop work. Neither of the Steves feel like this is the natural approach for them. So what are they planning on doing instead? Trading212 have been busy lately and at the top of the list is a SIPP coming later this (calendar) year. This is one for both Steve D and Steve W to be keeping an eye on. A couple of big questions are still to be answered, including what it might cost. But it’s firmly on the radar, so watch this space! Steve W uses the Trading212 web app quite a lot – and it’s had a big overhaul lately. Some features from the original version are back, blended with the layout of the most recent instantiation. At first, Steve wasn’t positive on it at all (he doesn’t like change very much). But which parts of the product have been winning him round and how is he setting his screen up to take advantage? Adobe is a tech company that both Steves have had their eye on for some time. And the company looks like a natural AI winner.  The stock has taken a hit after its latest earnings report, though. A $1bn breakup fee for the aborted Figma deal isn’t helping, but does the future look any brighter? The big story from this week was the UK Budget, but that’s not the main thing that’s been moving the portfolio numbers for Steve and Steve this week. What is? So what was in the Chancellor’s latest fiscal event and whole are the likely stock market winners? Steve W’s starting us off with the NI cut and a stock outside the consumer discretionary sector. Steve D’s also been looking at reforms to the way child benefit is processed. The move has been a welcome one almost across the board, but our Hull expert hasn’t said anything positive about the government yet… The most exciting news for UK investors was the announcement of a new British ISA for buying UK shares in. Both Steves think there are some good UK stocks around so Steve W’s going over how it might work. Steve D, on the other hand, is worried the idea might not see the light of day. There’s a way to go yet in terms of the details and with a potential change of government on the way, could it be over before it starts? Apple shares have been hitting a rough patch lately, with China sales down and a fine from the EU over its anticompetitive practices. But Steve W thinks there might be something here. After shuttering its car project, the company is focusing on artificial intelligence. And with its size and resource power, could it be a stock to watch in the AI revolution? Fast casual dining is in right now and Steve D’s been looking at the latest entrant into the scene. Cava’s Greek food is off to a good start with US consumers, but could it be the next Chipotle? Growth looks good, the balance sheet looks strong, and the company is doing impressive things. In a sector that can be unpredictable, though, is the high price tag worth the potential reward?
