EPISODE SUMMARY​ A few days ago while in full time dad-mode, I was sitting and watching Disney/Pixar’s movie Cars. If you’ve never seen it, it’s about a an anthropomophized racecar named Lightning McQueen gets mixed up and lost in a forgotten town in the middle of the American mid-west on his way to THE BIG RACE. During his stay there he learns valuable lessons on hard work, friendship, humility, and teamwork, family. While I was watching the movie I couldn’t help but notice the parallels to my early journey of running a business and that which I see regularly talking with photographers.  In this episode, I chat through a synopsis of the movie (spoiler alerts!) and relate it to how so many photographers approach business: unbalanced, unfocused, and trying to do it all themselves. EPISODE SUMMARY The Focused15 is a new segment that I created to shed light on some of the common questions that I receive, comment on interesting posts and articles from around the interwebs, and share thoughts from other conversations. I love long-form content, but there are so many topics and questions that don’t need an hour-long, robust deep dive. This new segment aims to answer a question or share my thoughts in 15 minutes or less. It’s like a shot in the proverbial arm of your business!   Today’s topic comes from a post in a group on Facebook. The photographer shared a situation on a call with a potential bride. The photographer was doing their typical spiel about how they would photograph the day.    “I’ll have your mom help you put on your veil, your dress, and earring…” when the bride cut the photographer off and said, “My mom is dead.”   This rightfully threw the photographer for a loop which was hard to recover from. EPISODE SUMMARY Annemie Tonken is an incredible family and portrait photographer from the Chapel Hill area of North Carolina as well as a photography business coach with This Can’t Be That Hard. In episode 30, Annemie shares a lot of her history with money including when both her attorney and a financial advisor told her that her business wouldnt sustain her. “I was already living on a shoe string budget,” she says, and when her financial advisor told her to spend less, she thought she would take the more fun route of making more money per session! This led her on a quest to find a balance between the all-inclusive style of photography and IPS (In-Person Sales) all while managing her money, being a mom to two boys, and increasing her bottom line.
