How Do I Start My Search for a Great Nonclinical Job
Email subscribers and podcast listeners often approach John with questions about finding a nonclinical or nontraditional clinical job. One of the most common questions is: "How do I get started?" In this week's podcast episode, John answers this question while including some of the decisions he made as he pursued his former career as a hospital chief medical officer. He highlights a stepwise approach that includes: • Acknowledge something is wrong. • Committing to addressing the problem. • Looking for a solution in your current world. • Looking for a solution near your current world. • Looking for a solution out there somewhere. • Then, learning about what's possible, what's been done before, and how did it work out? Why Adopt This Email Strategy in Your New Business
During this week's episode, John describes why email marketing is an important tool for almost any business and how he has changed his approach to email marketing over the past year or so. Unlike social media platforms, you own your list and it cannot be suddenly limited or deleted. Email marketing is less expensive than other marketing approaches, and it provides you with customers who have demonstrated their interest in your products. An email subscriber list must be nurtured over time. Subscribers will develop trust in you as you provide inspiration, encouragement, and education on a regular basis. One strategy for doing that involves sending shorter, more frequent emails with personal stories that entertain and educate your subscribers, with a focus on increasing click rates and sales. Top 10 Ways to Encourage Your Guests to Leave After a Party
The week between Christmas and New Year's Eve is generally pretty slow. So, rather than bringing an interview or an intense career-related topic, we address the following question: How do I encourage my guests to leave at the end of a dinner party? In a fun and humorous way, John provides a top ten list, in reverse order, of the techniques that he and others have used to gently recognize that it is time to head home. We hope you enjoy this short diversion. How to Go from Surviving to Thriving in a Remote Healthcare Job
Working remotely has become all the rage, with its potential advantages of adding flexibility and autonomy to our lives, avoiding office politics, and practical savings in fuel and automobile maintenance costs. But there are some real downsides that can occur. Today's guest is Frieda Wiley, Pharm. D., who worked as a chemist before pursuing her pharmacy doctorate. Like many of you, she was attracted to the idea of working remotely. She started doing that part-time, but eventually went full-time. And she discovered that there were challenges to working remotely that caused negative mental and physical health consequences. Those consequences led her to transition from remote clinical work to freelance medical writing. Then she leveraged her writing skills and her experiences to write a book called: Telecommuting Psychosis: From Surviving to Thriving While Working in Your Pajama Pants. During the podcast, we discuss her work as a medical writer, and some of the lessons she wrote about in her new book. Complete the Journey to Your First Fabulous MSL Job
This week's episode presents Part 2 of an excerpt from my course How to Secure a Career as a Medical Science Liaison. Together, these 2 episodes provide you with a good understanding of what an MSL does and how to pursue your first job as an MSL. The material presented over these two weeks, while dense with information, only represents about 15% of the material in the course itself. But if you're struggling to pursue a Pharma job, this will help you better understand the most popular entry-level position in the Pharma Industry. By getting deep into what an MSL job is, and how to apply for your first MSL job, you'll get a much better idea if this is a good choice for you. Remember that the material being presented in these two episodes is only a fraction of the lectures and supporting materials found in my course How to Secure a Career as a Medical Science Liaison. You can learn everything you need to know to apply for your first MSL position for less than $400. To learn more about the course go to nonclinicaphysicians.com/mslcourse. How to Secure a Captivating Career as an MSL
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) in the pharmaceutical industry is a popular position for physicians who wish to leave clinical practice. This is true because it is possible to qualify for the job regardless of the extent of training (i.e., whether residency-trained or board certified, or not) or specialty; it does not require special certifications or degrees (beyond a medical degree); and it provides a moderate amount of flexibility to work part of the time from home. However, it often involves traveling to meet with clients up to 60% of the time. John created a six-lesson course called How to Secure a Career as a Medical Science Liaison for the Nonclinical Career Academy. And he has taken excerpts from that course for PNC Podcast Episodes 276 and 277. By presenting the pros and cons, and an overview of the steps you can take to prepare for a job as an MSL, you will gain a much deeper understanding of the position and whether to pursue it. He also goes into detail about common tactics used to find a nonclinical career, including converting your CV to a resumé, engaging mentors; networking effectively, creating a LinkedIn profile, and identifying professional organizations that can hasten your progress. The course can be found at: https://nonclinicalphysicians.com/mslcourse. You will find links mentioned in the episode at https://nonclinicalphysicians.com/captivating-career-as-an-msl.
