How to Avoid Debt and Have Consistent Cash Flow on Your Farm
Learn to maintain an empty inbox & organized mind with my free "Inbox Zero" training: http://www.3cowmarketing.com/zero When you started your farm, did you have a plan for cash flow? I didn’t, I just knew I wanted to start a farm. Now I ended up picking something that was great for cash flow. With dairy, I would milk the cows in the morning and by the end of the day, I would literally have a box of cash. This was back in the days when people picked up milk on their own and put money in a box. We were open seven days a week, and it was the best cash flow plan I could have dreamed up. I was lucky, because I didn’t intentionally have a plan for immediate cash flow. Depending on what you’re producing, there are times when you need to invest some of your outside money in your farm and times when you’re making more from your product sales. Lack of cash flow is another big reason many farmers go out of business, and so on today's episode, I'm talking about 3 ways to have more consistent cash flow on your farm. If you're in the first year or two of your business, you’re going to have a lot of start-up expenses as you’re building the infrastructure of your farm. With this understanding, you’ll want to have a lot of working capital either with a big bank account full of money or a day job that allows you to keep investing in your farm. Beyond these first years, we’re talking about money coming into then is going out of your business, and simple changes you can make in running your business so that you have consistent cash flow and don’t have to keep using credit cards or taking out loans in order to run your farm. In this episode, I’m sharing one of the best changes I made on my farm and how you can make this simple change today to help with a cash flow problem. I’m explaining why this change is a win for your business and your customers, and how to convey these benefits so that customers are happy to pay. We’re also taking a look at assets and liabilities, as I explain why I think one commonly considered liability is actually an asset in business. I’m sharing how this asset contributes to the profits on my farm and how you can do the same. When you listen to this episode, you’ll discover what might be the most valuable asset in your business and what to focus on in order to have a positive cash flow, and a profitable, sustainable business. If you're ready to increase your cash flow, listen to the newest episode of Profitable Mindset now! Much love, Charlotte

How to Clearly Define Your Roles on the Farm
FREE Inbox Zero Training - Get Control of Your Email Inbox & Your Time: http://3cowmarketing.com/zeroWhen I started my farm 11 years ago, I was a one-woman show. This lasted for about a month. After all, I had a dairy and was milking cows twice a day, seven days a week. With three kids at home, I realized I needed help. I have a lot of farmers who come to me for help and part of the reason they’re overwhelmed is that they’re arguing with the reality that they can’t do all of the work and run the business. No matter where you are in business - if you’re just starting out or if you’re five years in and wondering why you’re struggling so hard, this week’s episode is going to help you. Now, when we first start our farms, we DO need to be the employee and the boss. When I first started my farm, I would go out and milk the cows, 5:00 to 7:00 AM. Then I'd come in and get the kids off to school. Then I'd shower, sit down at my desk and do two, three hours of office work and make sure my store was set and ready for customers. So I moved between both, and often, when you first start out, you are going to be both. However, in order to be profitable, you're going to have to step more and more into the role of being the boss and learn those skills in order to move the business forward. And if you’re going to scale and build a profitable business, you need a team. Even if you’re just starting out and don’t feel you can afford to hire support, it’s crucial to your success to be able to differentiate your role as boss vs. your role as an employee. When we blur these roles together, we often end up doing tasks that seem important, but we’re not actually moving the business forward. Blurring these roles together is the reason why many people go out of business. In this week’s episode of the podcast, we’re talking about the differences between your role as the owner of your business and your role as an employee of your business. I’ll walk you through creating job descriptions, responsibilities, and expectations for each role. This process will help you move forward in your business whether you’re doing it all or are ready to hire employees. Along with sharing practical tips that can help you start moving your business forward this week, I’m sharing the mindset shifts I work on with clients that will help you in each of these roles. Plus, I’m sharing the very first thing you need to do if you want to hire employees but don’t think you can afford to yet. If you’re ready to take your business to the next level, listen to the newest episode of Profitable Mindset now! Much love, Charlotte

If you Feel Bad Charging What You Need To, This Will Help
Book a free strategy session: https://3cowmarketing.com/strategy 15 years ago we started drinking raw milk, and as soon as we started drinking it, I noticed that my kids’ eczema (that they’d had for years) went away. Then about a year later, our raw milk farmer just up and quit. He went out of business and his customers were left scrambling to find another raw milk source. In talking with him, he said he just couldn’t make it work financially. Now I was paying $6 a gallon at the time, but I easily would have paid double. I asked, “Why didn’t you increase the price?” He teared up and said he didn’t think he could charge more and he just didn’t feel right asking his customers to pay more. I share this story with you because I hear this story all the time. Whether it’s in private messages or emails, or posts in one of my Facebook groups, I keep hearing that you don’t enjoy pricing your products for a healthy profit. You feel bad. You feel guilty. Some of you have even said you feel bad taking money for your products. I want to help you because obviously, you won't have a business if you don't make a profit. And if you don't feel good making that profit, then you're more likely to give up. I don’t want you to give up on your dreams or your business, so in this week’s podcast episode, I’m talking about the value you offer your customers and I’m sharing a 3-step formula to help you intentionally design and market this value. We’re really talking about business basics. You go into business to create something of value that people will gladly pay money - which also has value - for. This is how our economy functions. If you're going to build a profitable, successful, sustainable business, you've got to consider the value exchange and stop making pricing and selling mean anything about you. You’ve got to realize that you are in business to exchange value for value. Take you out of the equation. If you’re not sure of the unique value you offer customers or you feel bad charging what you need to, join me for episode 40 of the podcast. When you listen to this episode, you’ll learn how to feel clear and confident in the value you offer, and even better, you’ll know how to market that value so that buying your products becomes a no-brainer for your customers. When you figure out the value you're offering to the right people-- and the solution you provide with your products that you are selling-- and you communicate that solution, people are ecstatic to be able to pay you money for that product. I promise you. Listen to the newest episode of Profitable Mindset! Much love, Charlotte

The 2 Big Reasons Businesses Fail
Schedule your FREE strategy session here: http://3cowmarketing.com/strategy April came to me for coaching last week to get help with feeling hopeless because the local slaughterhouse canceled her processing appointments for her cows and hogs. She confirmed and reconfirmed with the butcher so I can understand why she was feeling terrible. As a result of this hopeless feeling, she had looping thoughts like "I should've done a better job" and "why am I even doing this" and generally tearing herself down for this bad news. She needed help getting past these looping thoughts because she was not getting her other work done on the farm, she was snapping at others and feeling crappy for days on end. We never go into business expecting to fail — yet 80% of us will fail by year 2. IF you make it through the first 5 years of your business, your chances of surviving increase significantly for the long term. But here's the deal - success NEVER happens by chance. It's a choice and a mindset that you create! Today’s episode of the Profitable Mindset is all about how to plan ahead for the inevitable rejection, confusion, fear, and doubt that you're GUARANTEED to experience in the first few years of business. With only 2% of small businesses making it to the 5 year mark, you’re going to want to go ALL IN on planning with intention and how to handle certain failures and challenges.
