André Anderson on aspirational play, upward spirals and how the world belongs to the people who tell stories

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler interviews André Anderson, an author, educator, and the founder of Freedom and Balance art college. Anne first encountered Andre during his impactful TEDx talk at Hackney Empire in London and was immediately drawn to his innovative approach to storytelling.André tells Anne about his journey from a creative child who loved making imagery, writing stories and dreaming of his own media empire to becoming a self-published author and community storyteller. He explains how his first book "Ultra" — written in just 12 days on his Blackberry — opened unexpected doors and taught him the principle that "the more you create, the freer you become."Their conversation also explores André's groundbreaking project "Authors of the Estate," for which he transformed his Northwest London council estate into a publishing house. Andre explains how this initiative challenged negative narratives about his community by empowering residents to author their own stories. He likens this work to the tradition of oral historians in West Africa (called griot), highlighting how storytelling serves as both cultural preservation and a political act. André also mentions "Chalk Hill," the second book that followed "Authors of the Estate" in his publishing journey.Anne and André discuss the etymology of words like "author" and "education," as André explains how understanding their roots has shaped his approach to creativity and teaching. André also explains how his art college, Freedom and Balance, creates environments for people to discover their unique creative language through play. He shares his realization that facilitation is about asking powerful questions rather than providing all the answers, describing his role memorably: "I am Gandalf, and all of my tools, or all of my magic, is tools of play."Anne and André delve into the importance of aspirational play for adults in an increasingly AI-driven world, with André suggesting that play might be the most distinctly human activity that cannot be replaced by technology. They examine how imperfection, vulnerability and the willingness to make mistakes can become powerful educational tools and discuss André's project "Love Letters for My Peoples," which uses love as a framework for creativity and connection.Throughout the conversation, André shares his philosophy of "heart work" — creative work that incorporates strands of one's authentic self — and reflects on the importance of process over product. André even makes a compelling comparison between his "Authors of the Estate" project and Nas's seminal album "Illmatic," referring to it as his defining work that fans always want to hear again. The episode concludes with André's thoughtful responses to Anne's closing lightning round questions, revealing his deep connection to creativity, his appreciation for his mother's early support of his creative pursuits and his belief that happiness comes from knowing the world has heard you.A profound conversation about reclaiming narratives, finding freedom through creativity and the transformative power of play. Happy listening!About André AndersonFreedom & Balance is an Art College for the artist in everyone. They create programs that help organizations shape their future through play and help communities playfully grow into the type of leaders their world looks for. Francesca Hogi on how to find true love, dating with intention and the fairytale industrial complex

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler interviews Francesca Hogi, a TED speaker, host of the Dear Franny Podcast, and internationally recognized expert on dating and relationships. She's been featured in media outlets such as The Today Show, Marie Claire, The New York Times, Harper's Bazaar and The Huffington Post, and is the founder of The True Love Society, a community for people seeking deeper self and romantic love.Anne and Francesca’s conversation begins with Francesca sharing her life story, revealing how she was a deeply romantic child who devoured her older sister's romance novels, foreshadowing her future career path. She was working as a corporate lawyer when she began her journey toward love coaching by blogging about dating. She then turned to matchmaking for several years before finding her true calling as a love coach.Francesca tells Anne about her holistic approach to helping people find love. She also discusses some elements of her book, How to Find True Love: Unlock Your Romantic Flow and Create Lasting Relationships, in which she breaks down four key components for readers to establish the foundations for a true love relationship: mindset, heartset, soulset, and skillset. Francesca challenges the conventional hierarchies of love, explaining how we tend to put romantic love up on this pedestal, thinking of it as the pinnacle and then assuming failure if we don’t find it in our lives. Instead, she advocates for adapting our intentions to have love through all parts of our lives. Then Anne and Francesca delve into the realities of modern dating, particularly the evolution and impact of dating apps. Francesca pointedly reminds listeners that "swiping on a dating app is not dating — going on dates is dating," and emphasises the importance of "developing the skills — because it is all skill — to be able to meet people more organically as they live their lives."Francesca explains what she asks her clients (and readers of her book) to develop more self-awareness, like: "What do I actually believe about myself when it comes to love?" and "In the love story of your life, what is the role that you play?" She highlights how many people hold beliefs about themselves and their romantic possibilities that are not truly in alignment with what they want, and these questions guide us back to our focus.Their conversation turns to exploring the deeper spiritual dimensions of finding love through what Francesca calls one’s soulset: considering faith and connection to a higher power. She adds that serendipity, for example, is something that you can court intentionally, and how practicing gratitude makes you more aligned with love. She offers that having that soul-level connection and understanding our romantic energy is essential because while often we understand mind, emotion, and action, we tend to misunderstand energy. To conclude, Anne asks her favourite questions, which has Francesca share her grounding practices, in particular her daily morning and evening journaling sessions, and her love of walking in any weather. A warm, insightful, and empowering conversation that challenges conventional wisdom about modern love and offers a refreshing perspective on how to center love in all aspects of life. Happy listening!Selected links from episodeOut of the Clouds website: https://outoftheclouds.com/Out of the Clouds on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_outofthecloudsThe Mettā View website: https://avm.consulting/metta-viewAnne on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/annvi/Anne on Threads: https://www.threads.net/@annviAnne on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/anne-v-muhlethaler/Find more about Francesca at FrancescaHogi.comHer book, "How to Find True Love: Unlock Your Romantic Flow and Create Lasting Relationships"How to date with intention, Francesca’s online courseFrancesca’s True Love Society on Patreon  Find Francesca on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dearfrannyOn LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dearfrannyOn Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DearFrannyFollow Francesca’s podcast Dear Franny on Instagram Or subscribe to the podcast on Apple Podcasts Selected links from episode:The princess industrial complex The Love Inside, a book by Jessica Faith GrahamU2 I still haven’t found what I’m looking for The book  The Untethered Soul by Michael Singer This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative? Having tea with our strong emotions

In this intimate audio essay, Anne V Mühlethaler reflects on Rebecca Shaw's piercing observation about watching powerful men "burn the world down." Through her own journey of frustration and self-reflection, Anne explores how our childhood coping mechanisms shape adult perspectives on "us vs. them."Drawing from both psychological insights and Buddhist wisdom, Anne examines how the very qualities we despise in others might mirror parts of ourselves we'd rather not see. She weaves Dr. Guralnik's work on political polarization - how early experiences of "splitting" the world into all-good or all-bad persist into adulthood - with Buddhist teachings that offer a pathway forward through radical acceptance. From confronting her own "inner dictator" to embracing ancient wisdom about sitting with difficult emotions, Anne invites listeners to consider: What if the key to healing our divided world begins with acknowledging the complexity within ourselves?Selected links from episode: The opinion piece by Rebecca Shaw in the GuardianThe guest essay in the New York Times by Dr Orna Guralnik Wealth extremismTara Brach's article about inviting Mara to teaThe Metta View This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative? The Mindful Dance of Life: Embracing Failure and Intuition

This episode is a hybrid one of sorts, as host Anne Mühlethaler presents a new podcast launching soon: the companion to her newsletter, The Mettā View. For The Mettā View Anne regularly writes personal essays coloured with a mindful lens. In this episode she shares the audio version of her last newsletter essay of 2024, all about her end-of-year thoughts on letting go and trusting the flow. Anne reflects that 2024 has been a journey of embracing failure, trusting her intuition and learning to dance with life’s unexpected turns. Join her as she reflects on the lessons learnt, the wisdom gained and the importance of letting go of the need to control (which is tough but important). Inspired by the teachings of mindfulness mentor David Cabrera, this episode explores the power of “allowing the dharma to happen” and finding encouragement in discouragement. Loving Kindness for Mentors - Guided meditation

This is a guided Mettā meditation, also known as Loving Kindness, dedicated towards our mentors.Anne V Mühlethaler, coach and certified mindfulness meditation teacher,Anne starts the session by inviting us to bring an intention to mind, for clarity. Then she invites us to bring to mind a being, a person who has inspired us in some way — whether they were an official or more of an undercover mentor — who lit our path and helped us in some way. In this practice, we consider the qualities of our mentor that we want to emulate, to nurture. Then we hold this person in our mind’s eye and we repeat phrases of well-wishes. We sendLoving Kindness with gratitude directed toward this first mentor, and then toward a second. Anne closes the practice by inviting us to imagine our caring mentors sending us the same well wishes of Loving Kindness. In an energetic gratitude loop of metta, Anne invites us to direct Loving Kindness to ourselves, ending with our own mentor wish:“May I too become a beacon, radiating guidance and inspiration.  May I too be a mentor, illuminating the  path for those in need of clarity and direction, whether I support them in their personal life or in their career.”  This episode is brought to you by Le TrenteAre you a purpose-driven individual seeking clarity in your personal narrative? Kia Miller on dialling into presence, building self-trust, and Radiant Body Yoga

In this episode of Out of the Clouds, host Anne Mühlethaler explores the transformative world of Kundalini yoga with accomplished yoga teacher Kia Miller. In addition to Kundalini, Kia also teaches meditation, breathwork, and Vinyasa yoga. In their conversation, Anne and Kia dive right into Kia’s meditation, grounding and breathwork practices, before Kia recounts how she has blended her beloved Ashtanga Vinyasa with Kundalini tradition to form the unique Radiant Body Yoga school. With an emphasis on the power of breathwork and energy coherence, Kia shares how she evolved to discover these practices and how they harmonise the energies of heart and mind, ultimately offering a balanced approach to managing the stresses of modern life. Kia's journey reveals the profound impact that yoga can have on building self-trust and presence.Kia opens to Anne about her personal evolution from an athlete that was disconnected from deeper self-awareness to a yoga teacher who embodies authenticity and presence. She discusses how Kundalini yoga ignited a spark within her, leading to a newfound intimacy with herself and a conscious way of living. Kia found inspiration and support through her teachers Guru Singh — whom she calls a wayseer — and Guru Chan. Kia explains how she found a path to connect genuinely with the present moment, shedding her old skin metaphorically, and became the teacher she is today.Kia talks in depth about the spiritual awakening that is facilitated by Kundalini yoga in focusing energy at the pineal gland. Kia likens the pineal body to a radio receiver that, through dynamic movement, breathwork and meditation, can release powerful chemicals, facilitating deeper spiritual experiences. Kia tells Anne how Kundalini kriyas (a specific sequence of physical actions that work toward a particular outcome) help shift awareness from a "me-centric" to a "we-centric" consciousness, enhancing interconnectedness and making infinite potential accessible.Grounding practices are another focal point of the conversation, with Kia emphasising to Anne the importance of breathwork, core kriyas and energetic field practices for maintaining energy and stability.
