Learn the English Phrases "in one shot" and "It's shot!"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English terms IN ONE SHOT and IT'S SHOT!In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase in one shot. When you do something in one shot, it means you are successful the first time you attempt to do it. Believe it or not, these short English lessons, I usually do them in one shot. Sometimes I fail. Sometimes I say something wrong or I mess up and I start again. But usually, I make the video in one shot. That means I hit record and I talk for a full four minutes without stopping. Usually I do it in one shot. One time I found a phone in my classroom and I thought to myself, I should try and unlock this phone to see who it belongs to. And so, I guessed the password in one shot. I punched in one, two, three, four and that was the person's password and the phone was unlocked. I got it in one shot.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I want to teach you today is the phrase it's shot. When you say something is shot, it means it's broken. It's completely useless. This is my old phone. It's shot. It doesn't even turn on anymore. In fact, the screen, only half the screen worked for a bit and then it just stopped working, it's shot. So when you say something is shot, it means it's completely broken. Our last van, not one of the two I have right now, we eventually got rid of because it was shot. It just didn't start anymore. It was really starting to rust. It was shot.So to review, when you do something in one shot, it means you do it the first time you try it, you succeed the first time you try it. I think right now, I'm probably gonna be able to finish this video in one shot. Everything seems to be going really good. And when you say something is shot, when you say ah, it's shot, hey, do you wanna buy my car? I'm not buying your car. It's shot. That simply means it's no good anymore. It doesn't really work and it's not useful to anyone. It's shot. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Noriko. It's a bit of a long one, here we go. "Hi, I'm always wondering "when you usually upload a new video. "I mean, the time when you upload "is sometimes in the middle of the night there in Canada. "Do you set a timer to upload a video automatically "or wake up before the crack of dawn? "I'm not tech savvy, so this question might be dumb. "Anyways, thanks."And my response, "Yes, that is correct. "I upload the video the day before "and I set it to go live at around 3:00 a.m. my time. "This gives me a bit of a buffer "in case I think of something I need to change. "It's also the time of day "when most English learners around the world watch videos. So I don't, Noriko, get up at the crack of dawn. Thanks for that comment, by the way. I don't get up at the crack of dawn. I am able to upload the video the day before. On YouTube, I can set it to go live at a certain time. And when I looked at when most people around the world are learning English, it's usually between 3:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon. That seems to be the most popular time. Sorry, I got, I think I just walked through a spider web. That seems to be the most popular time to watch videos to learn English. Which makes sense. Most of North America is awake at a different time than the rest of the world and most people in North America already speak English, so they don't need to really learn.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "to point out" and "short and to the point"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO POINT OUT and SHORT AND TO THE POINTIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to point out. Now, when you point something out, it can mean that you're using your finger. Like I could point out that the sky is really beautiful today. I could point out that the grass behind me is quite green. I could actually point, but when you point something out, it doesn't actually require that you use your finger. If you are in a meeting, wow, there's a lot of lawnmowers driving around right now. I'd like to point out that there are a lot of lawnmowers driving out right now. When you use it in that way, it simply means that you are mentioning something.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianSometimes when I'm in a meeting, someone will say something, and I'll say, I'd like to point out that we did that last year. Sorry, I don't actually raise my finger like this. I could just say, I'd like to point out that we already talked about this last year, or we already did that last year. So to point out can simply mean to mention something. The other phrase I wanted to mention today, and help you learn is the phrase short and to the point. When you talk in front of a whole bunch of people, oh, I'd like to point out that the lawnmowers have stopped making noise. Wait, I hear another one going now. Anyways, when you are short and to the point, it means that you're talking, and you're going to, it's usually not this loud when I make my videos, you're talking, and you're going to talk for a short amount of time, and you're gonna talk about the subject at hand. You're not going to talk about other things that aren't important. You're gonna keep it short and to the point. When I go somewhere and someone is talking up front, it's nice when they keep it short and to the point. That way, no one in the audience gets bored. So to review, when you point something out, it means you mention it. I'd like to point out that normally I make videos when it's very quiet outside. I'm not even sure if you can hear the lawn mowers, but usually that's how I make videos, when it's quiet. And I usually keep these videos short and to the point. I don't know if you've ever noticed, but I do not stray from the topic very much, and I usually only talk for about four minutes. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Hasib. "Why do you always keep your hair short, Bob? Is there any reason behind it?" And my response, "A long time ago, I had a motorcycle, and I had longer hair. When I took my helmet off, my hair looked funny. I had helmet head. So I started to cut it short. I liked it so much, I've just kept doing it."So I have mentioned that before, actually in the past, people have asked or I've voluntarily talked about my hair, but yes, I just like it short, it's much cooler to have short hair, like actually cooler. I guess it's kind of cool and hip as well, but I meant like in the summer when it's hot, it's much cooler to have short hair. So I've just always kept it that way. And I really, really do enjoy it.Hey, I've mentioned this a few times, but I'll mention it again. I'm finding it hard to keep my thoughts in order, because it's August 16th today, school is starting soon. I feel like every day, I'm making a list. I talked about lists before in one of my members only videos about how much I like lists. I find that my life isn't too busy as long as I stay on top of things. And one of the ways to stay on top of things, of course, is to make a nice little list. So I've been making quite a few lists Support the show

Learn the English Phrases IN A RUT and IN A RUSH
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases IN A RUT and IN A RUSHIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, in a rut. When you describe your life, and if you use the phrase, I feel like I'm in a rut, it means that you're doing the same thing every day, and it's not that exciting anymore. Maybe your job makes you feel like you're in a rut. You get up every morning, you have breakfast, you go to work, you do the same thing all day, and you come home, and then you do the same thing the next day. You feel like you're in a rut. Sometimes we use this phrase to talk about relationships. Maybe you're dating someone, and you kind of like them, but you're not sure if the relationship is going anywhere, and you just kind of see each other every weekend, and there's no spark. You might feel like you're in a rut. The second phrase I wanted to teach you today, I think someone drove in, and the dogs are barking.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase, in a rush. When you are in a rush, it means that you are in a hurry. It means that you're probably late. You need to be somewhere on time, and you're running behind, and you're just trying to get in your vehicle to go. You are in a rush. It just means that you are in a hurry. So to review, when you are in a rut, it means that you feel like you're doing the same thing every day, and it's not super enjoyable. And when you are in a rush, it means that you are in a hurry. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. Let me see if I can find this here. This comment is from Yaroslaw, and we have, "One question comes to my mind. I know that in our part of the world, it is not common to gift an even quantity of flowers. So it should be an odd quantity, so it should be an odd quantity in bouquets. How about Canada? I know in the UK, it doesn't matter. By the way, your beard and mustache are very cool. Ha, my parents and relatives always insist on shaving mine, but I am continuing to struggle with them."And then my response is this. "Thanks for the kind words about my beard and mustache. I think it's my preferred look right now." This is my preferred look. "The most common amount of a single flower to buy is usually a dozen here, like a dozen roses. Although, when we make mixed bouquets with all different flowers in them, we usually make them with an odd number, because it just looks better."Isn't that interesting? When you make bouquets, if you put an even number, like if you put eight or 10 flowers in it, doesn't look as good as it would if you put, sorry, I'm trying to walk through the sunflowers here. It doesn't look as good as it would if you put nine or 11 in. I'm trying not to step on the flowers while I walk out here.So yes, when you buy a single, by the way, thanks Yaroslaw for that comment. When you buy a single kind of flower, usually, you will buy a dozen, a dozen zinnias for instance, or a dozen sunflowers. Sometimes people will buy half a dozen, but when people buy a mixed bouquet, usually when we design it, we try to put an odd number in, just looks better. So we put in 15, or we put in 11. It just makes a nicer bouquet. I think there's a better balance. And we usually try to put three of each kind of flower.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases TO RIP OFF and A RIP-OFF
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO RIP OFF and A RIP-OFFIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to rip off. Now, if you're wearing a bandage and you're done wearing it, you can rip off the bandage. But that's not the meaning I was meaning to teach you today. When you say that you rip off someone, it means that you steal something from them or you give them a really, really bad deal. If you were buying a bouquet of flowers from me, and I said, "There are 12 flowers in this bouquet," and then later when you got home, you realized there were only eight, you could say, "That person ripped me off. I got ripped off by that person. They said I was going to get a certain number of flowers and I got way less."WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianBy the way, Jen and I never rip people off. It's a bad thing to do in business. It's not a nice thing to do at all. We do not ever rip people off. If you buy a bouquet from us and we say there's 12 flowers in it, there's probably actually 13 or 14 flowers in it. We like to give a little bit extra. The other phrase I wanted to teach you today is a noun, and it's a rip-off. I think I taught this one a couple of years ago. A rip-off is the way you describe when someone has ripped you off. So I'm going from verb form to noun form. You could say, "I bought this bouquet of flowers from Bob and there's only six flowers in it. He said there was going to be 12. This was a rip-off." So I got ripped off, verb form, or it was a rip-off, noun form. There's just a little bit of a difference there when you describe the situation.Anyways, to review, when you rip someone off, it means you steal from them or you lie in some sort of transaction and then they don't get what you said they were going to get. You could also use it for stealing. Like if someone took my trailer, I could say someone ripped off my trailer. That's outright stealing. And the noun form, you can call something a rip-off. My videos, I think, are a pretty good deal. I don't think they're a rip-off. They're free, and I think you always get what you're expecting, or usually. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Sid. "Are there any venomous snakes in those bushes, Teacher Bob? Have you ever seen any? I don't know, outta the blue, this question came in my mind, so I asked. Loved today's episode. Thanks." And my response was, "There are no venomous snakes in my part of Canada."So when we walk around on the farm and when you see bushes like this, have no fear. Areas on the farm that we don't mow, where it's just all weeds, there is nothing living in here that is dangerous. One of the coolest parts about the part of the world I live in is that there really isn't anything dangerous here. Skunks are a little bit annoying. If skunks spray you, it really, really stinks. Sometimes there's animals that have a disease called rabies. So you might have a rabid dog or a rabid fox or something like that. And if they bite you, you have to get, I think you have to get some kind of medicine for that, some kind of needle. But generally, we're fairly safe here.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases TO SHAKE ON IT and TO SHAKE THE HABIT
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO SHAKE ON IT and TO SHAKE THE HABITIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, shake on it. When you sell something to someone, especially something used, when you agree on a price, you might shake on it. That means you'll literally shake hands. And this means that you've both agreed on the price, and you are both going to make sure the deal actually happens. The other person's gonna give you money, and you're going to give them the item. So you shake on it. It kind of shows that you have formalized the deal. By the way, I'm not sure with the pandemic, whether we're going to come up with a new way to do that, whether we're going to keep doing that here in North America. But when you agree to sell something, you usually shake on it. When you buy a car from a dealership, you'll often shake on it when you agree to buy it.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to shake the habit. We also say to kick the habit, and often, we shorten this to I'm trying to shake it. Do you still smoke cigarettes? No, I'm trying to shake the habit. I'm trying to kick the habit. Is he still, let me see. I'm trying to think of something else people do. Let's stick with the cigarette theme. Is he still smoking cigarettes? No, he's trying to shake it. He's really trying to shake the habit. So to review, when you shake on something, it means that you agree. So when you make a deal, you will shake on things with someone. And then to shake the habit means to simply quit doing something that you shouldn't do, because it's bad for you.I feel like I'm talking really fast today. Sorry about that. For some reason, I'm a fast talker today. I'll try to speak just slightly slower.Let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Francisco. "YouTube is a game changer for people who want to learn English, especially with your channel." And I say, I respond with, "I agree, it's the best thing ever for learning any language."So thanks, Francisco. By the way, I was saying that I think YouTube is the best thing ever for learning any language, not my particular channel. I do like my English learning channels, but they aren't the most amazing things in the world. I just think I do the best job I can, and people seem to like them. But yes, YouTube is a game changer.I know for myself, learning and practicing French, it's just amazing. I just remember years ago, if I wanted French videos, I would have to order them, and it would take two or three weeks for the videos to show up. Now I can just go on YouTube, and watch a video. Similar to books. The internet has revolutionized my ability to buy books in French. I know you're learning English, but I'm practicing my French. I can just go on Amazon, and I can say, show me all of the French books, and I can just buy an ebook for my Kindle, just like that. And it arrives. So it's very, very cool, and very, very awesome.I'm not sure if you can see this. I'll give you a look across the river. I know I mentioned that a tree blew down on our property, well, a tree also blew down across the river. Not sure if you can see it. I will zoom in when I do the edit here, but there's a tree down over there. And if we go this way, we'll walk along here. You can see all of the cool things that grow in the wild in Ontario, Canada. If we go down this way, you'll see that the neighbor has already been out with his chainsaw across the river there. There's another tree that went down, and he is in the process of chopSupport the show

Learn the English Terms GAME CHANGER and FAIR GAME
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English terms GAME CHANGER and FAIR GAMEIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, a game changer. Game changer is a term we use, sorry, it looks like the garbage truck is here, picking up the garbage. I'll try to continue the lesson. Something is called a game changer when it makes the situation way better. Years ago, we didn't actually have garbage pickup on the farm. When I was a kid, we had to take our garbage to the dump. But when they started to do garbage pickup with the truck, it was a game changer for my parents. It meant that they had more time to work on the farm. They didn't have to drive to the dump once a week to drop off the garbage, so it was a game changer.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase fair game. When something or someone is fair game, it means it's okay to criticize or joke about them. Politicians are fair game. A lot of times comedians will make fun of politicians, because we consider them fair game, that it's okay to make jokes about them. Well, I guess that depends on what country you live in, but I'm not gonna get into that. For my English lessons, pretty much everything is fair game. Although, I usually don't do lessons on politics or religion. I avoid those. So I guess not everything is fair game when it comes to my lessons.Anyways, to review, when something is a game changer, it means that it changes the situation, or changes your life in some way, that makes it a lot better. And when something is fair game, it means that it is okay to make fun of that person, or that thing, or to criticize them. But, hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Mahmood. And I actually ran out here quickly to do this, Mahmood. "Hi, teacher, Bob. Thank you for the useful lesson. Why don't you take us near the road? Thank you, Mr. Bob." And my response, "I'll go out near the road today, when I make Friday's lesson, maybe."So I am out here, and I ran out, because I really wanted to catch the garbage truck. As coincidence, as, sorry. The coincidence was that as I came out to make this lesson, I'm having trouble speaking English today, did you notice that? I saw the garbage truck down the road. So I ran to the end of my driveway, because I wanted to catch the garbage truck on the video. But yes, I'll do a video out here by the road, for sure. We look this way, we can see there's a truck going by.If you look here, you can see all of our recycle bins on the ground. And the green bin is actually for compost. So in Ontario, Canada, you can put your compost at the road, your kitchen scraps and all those kinds of things, as well. The road is a little bit busy today. You can see there's a couple cars coming behind me, and there's a couple cars coming towards me as well. It's usually not this busy, but I guess people have a lot of stuff to do today. So they're out and about.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases IF ANYTHING and ANYTHING GOES
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases IF ANYTHING and ANYTHING GOESIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase if anything. This is a little phrase we use when we introduce the opposite to the current idea. Here's an example. If Jen and I brought flowers to market and we didn't sell a lot, you might think we should bring less flowers, but if anything, we should probably bring more flowers, so that our display is more colorful and people are more attracted to it, and come and buy more. So it's when you introduce the opposite idea. You might think to yourself on a hot day, it's a good idea to spend a lot of time in the shade, but if anything, it might be better to spend a lot of time in the hot sun so that you get used to it. That's kind of a bad example. Don't spend more time in the hot sun, but you get the point. I was introducing an idea which was kind of the opposite of what was being said.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase anything goes. This means that there are no rules or expectations. At work, you might have to wear a suit and tie, but your friend might work somewhere where anything goes. They can wear whatever they want. You might say to someone, "Are there any things you don't like when you get a pizza?" and you can say, "Oh, no, anything goes. I like all of the toppings. Put them all on." I've never had a pizza like that. I should try that someday. But anything goes means that there's no rules or expectations in a current situation. So to review, if you say, "If anything," it means that you're going to introduce a contrary or opposite idea to the conversation, and when you say, "Anything goes," it means that there's no rules or expectations or things that you have to do in a certain situation. Anything goes.Hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from D.Harish. "After completion of exams, we have to wait and see whether we will pass or not." And my response. "That's your only choice. You just have to wait and see."As a teacher, I'm keenly aware of this. When I give an exam, my students just have to wait and see what their grade is. Usually I grade exams very, very quickly, though. I'm a fast grader. On a day when students write an exam, I usually have it graded the same day. I don't like to make students wait, so I try to do it as quickly as possible.Anyways, you can see behind me, I have some equipment lined up here because I'm selling some farm equipment. So this is a plow. This plow is for sale. I'm asking $750 for it, but I don't think I'll get that much. It's in rough shape. It's a little bit rusty and it needs some parts. This is a mower that goes behind my small tractor, and I don't need this anymore because my son actually has a couple of lawnmowers, and he does it as a little business, so he mows some of my lawn now, so that's handy. So that's for sale, too. I'm asking $1,600 for this, but you can see a person came to look at it this morning, and they didn't like all of the rust on it, so they weren't willing to pay that much, so that's okay.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases WAIT AND SEE and WAIT FOR IT!
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO WAIT AND SEE and WAIT FOR IT!In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to wait and see. Sometimes you don't know what's going to happen, and so you want to wait and see what happens. And we even call this the wait and see approach. Maybe you're someone who likes to invest money in the stock market, but right now, you're going to hold onto your money, because you just want to wait and see what will happen. You don't feel like investing your money now, because you're not sure if the market will go up or down. So you might take a wait and see approach. Sometimes when you're looking to buy something, you think to yourself, you know what? I might just wait and see if the price will go down, or I'll wait and see if the price will go up. So it just means to wait, and to eventually see what happens, to see what change takes place.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase, wait for it, that's kind of how you say it. Wait for it. This is a common phrase. When you're watching short video clips on TikTok or Instagram, sometimes they'll show someone walking along, and then they'll have the words on the screen, wait for it, which means that something's going to happen. Maybe that person is going to get caught in a rainstorm. Maybe that person is going to slip and fall. And when they say wait for it at the beginning of the video, they're telling you that something's gonna happen, and you should wait. It's actually become a pretty common phrase on those platforms.Anyways, to review, when you wait and see, it means you wait, because you think something will change, and you're not sure what that will be, but you're going to wait and see what that change is. And when someone says to you wait for it, it means that something exciting is going to happen, and they want you to be ready to see it. Maybe someone's showing you a clip from a sporting game, and they say, and you're like, this is kind of boring. And they might say, wait and see, or wait for it. Sorry, I used the wrong phrase. Wait for it. And then something exciting will happen in the game.Anyways, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Lemoncute. Hi Bob, in my place, the roads are quite flat and long, so it's very suitable for jogging. It's pretty cool. And my response is it probably also makes it easier to see traffic coming. So yes. Thanks, Lemoncute, for that comment. I'm just laughing, 'cause a goat is actually yelling over here. Maybe we'll go see it. But yes, when roads are flat, it probably makes it nice for walking and jogging as you said, and that's probably really cool. 'Cause you can see if there are cars coming.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases TO CATCH ON and TO BE A CATCH
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO CATCH ON and TO BE A CATCHIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase "to catch on." Now, I taught this phrase a while ago, and I said it meant to understand something. When you're in a class and the teacher teaches something, eventually you catch on. But it has another meaning as well. When you say that something is catching on or that something is going to catch on, it means that everybody's going to start doing it. I wear blue shirts with a collar, and someday, maybe this will catch on and everyone around the world will wear blue shirts with collars. I doubt that will happen, but anyway, stay tuned because the comment this week uses this phrase. We'll talk about that in a sec.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is "to be a catch." Now, this is kind of a funny statement. When there's a guy or a girl who's really attractive or wealthy or a lot of people think they would make a good partner, we say that that person is a catch. If someone was to marry someone who's a doctor and has a lot of money and drives a fancy car, you might say, "Oh, he's a real catch. He's a catch." Or maybe someone in your family's dating someone whose family is wealthy, and you might say, "Oh, she's a catch."Anyways, to review, when you catch on or when something catches on, it means that it becomes popular and a lot of people around the world start doing it. And when you say that someone is a catch, it means that they are attractive and people really, really want to date them.Anyways, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Mohd Ags. "You're completely ahead of the game, Mr. Bob, not just one step ahead. You're in a league of your own, I'd say." Thank you. "P.S. I like how people are starting to adopt the three emoji thing at the end of their comments." And my response, "I've noticed that as well. The three emoji thing is catching on."So I used today's phrase when I replied to Mohd. Thanks, Mohd, for that. Yes, people are starting to put three emojis. I don't know why I started doing that. I usually try to pick three emojis that make some sense. Sometimes, it's just random, but usually, I try to have them make some sense.Hey, I'm standing in my shed. This is the location. I'm gonna walk out into the sun in a sec, so I'll need my sunglasses. But this is the location, it doesn't look like much now, where the flower shop will be. By the way, the road is right there. Oh, they're loading a big piece of equipment up. But right here is where the flower shop will be. I have to put a stone driveway in here, and I have to kind of build a storefront. That's where the wall that's being built from a fence will go. But anyways, just thought I'd show you that. It needs to be cleaned up quite a bit. It's quite messy. But I will get to that.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases TO BE ONE STEP AHEAD and TO STEP OUT
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrase TO BE ONE STEP AHEAD and TO STEP OUTIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to be one step ahead. When you run a business like Jen and I do, when you run a flower business or any other kind of business, you want to be one step ahead of your competition. You want to do things that are innovative or new, and you want to do them before the other people, who do the same thing as you, do them. We've done a few things over the year to stay one step ahead, to be one step ahead of our competition. A while ago, we stopped using plastic. We use paper to wrap our flowers, and all those kinds of little things. We just are always, through the winter, looking for ways to be one step ahead of our competition. They usually catch up. Sometimes the competition is one step ahead of us, then we look at what they're doing, so we can do it too.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? When you step out, it means to leave a room for a little while. Sorry, it's gonna get loud in here, 'cause I'm in the cooler. I'll show you the flowers in a second. Sometimes when I'm in my classroom, the principal will come to talk to me, and I will step out and talk to him for a little bit. It means I'll just go in the hallway and talk to him. Maybe you're at a friend's place or a relative's place, and your phone rings, and you say, "Hey, I'm just gonna step out and take this call." That means you're gonna go outside of their apartment or outside of their house in order to take the call. To step out means to simply go out of the room that you're in, usually outside. So, to review, to be one step ahead means to be doing things that are better than what other people are doing. You can be one step ahead of your colleagues. You can be one step ahead of another business. You can always do little things to be innovative and one step ahead. And to step out means to simply leave a room, just for a little bit, usually to chat or to talk with someone.Anyways, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from ünsal. "Hi, dear teacher Bob. How are you doing? What a blessing it is to raise kids in a place where you have childhood memories. I wish you and your family a healthy, peaceful, and long life there. By the way, I wonder if you bought the farm from your parents. If it's not too private of a question, can you tell the story of it? Have a great day. Love from Istanbul. Bye." And my response, "Sure, I'll tell the story in the next video."Yes, Jen and I actually bought the farm from my mom. My dad actually passed away, so it's kind of a sad story. My dad passed away, and my mom didn't wanna live on such a big farm, so Jen and I moved here, and we lived here for a few years, and we rented it from my mom. But then eventually we decided that we wanted to buy it, so we went to the bank and we got a mortgage. You can't live on a property this beautiful and not eventually buy it.Anyways, where am I standing? Well, I'm standing in the flower cooler. It is market day, and Jen has a lot of flowers ready to go. We have peonies and snapdragons and yarrow and feverfew and things that I don't know. And down here, you'll see there are all kinds of bouquets ready to go to market today. Over here, some flowers. It's actually a slow flower week for us. There aren't as many flowers as we would normally have.Support the show
