Learn the English Phrases "Time out!" and "down time"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TIME OUT and DOWN TIMEIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase time out. Now you may have heard this phrase before if you watch sports. Sometimes the coach will say, "Time out," and then the ref will blow the whistle. And then they will all stop playing for a little bit while the coach talks to the player. But did you know that teachers and parents and other people sometimes use this phrase as well? When I see two students arguing, sometimes I just say, "Hey, time out. Just stop arguing for a little bit. Let's try to resolve this situation in a different way." When my own children would be fighting or arguing, sometimes I would say, "Hey, time out. Let's just stop for a minute." Stop arguing, stop wrestling, whatever they were doing. Just, "Time out. Let's just stop and try to resolve this situation in a different way." So it's not just a phrase for coaches on sports teams.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is actually just a term, and it's the term down time. Down time refers to any time when you just relax and don't work. Jen is busy flower farming right now, but in November, she's looking forward to some down time. She will have some time in November where she doesn't have to work. Right now, Jen is putting in 12, 14, sometimes 16 hour days. She's very, very busy. So she's definitely looking forward to some down time. So hopefully that comes soon.So to review, when you say time out, it means just stop what you're doing. Usually there's a conflict, and you want people to just take a break from it. And when you refer to something as down time, it's just a time where you relax and don't work for a little bit. I could use some down time as well in the future.Hello. Hi. You're not in the video, just so you know. It's just me in the video. Just some people walking by right there. But hey, let's look at a comment from another video. This comment is from Eduardo. "Hi, Bob. Good morning. Hope everything's going well over there." And then my response, "It's a good day so far. I just went for a good walk. Now I'm taking the time to respond to comments. I hope you're having a good day."And then when I was done replying to comments, I came out here. So yes, there were just a few people walking by there. Anyways, what was I gonna say? Oh yeah, I've had a good morning. I went for an hour and a half walk. That was awesome. I just loved it. And thanks, Eduardo, for that comment. I hope you're having a good day as well.Hey, you might think I'm out here in the wilderness in Canada, but surprisingly, if I turn, you'll see there is a walking path. You just heard some people go by on the walking path. And then if I turn again, you'll see that I'm actually on the edge of town. So this is probably one of the coolest places to live in this town. People probably prefer these houses because the back of your house faces this creek down here. So if you live out this way, you have this beautiful view. If this was your house, your backyard faces this. It's actually the creek that I've showed you in other videos as well.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "getting nowhere" and "get it in writing"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases GETTING NOWHERE and GET IT IN WRITINGIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase getting nowhere. When you say that you're getting nowhere in English, it means you're doing something, but you aren't making any progress. Maybe you've been studying English for over a year and you don't feel like you are learning a whole lot. You could say you feel like you're getting nowhere. Sometimes during the summer, I have a lot of work to do. I have a big list and as I do jobs from my list, new jobs get added and I feel like I'm getting nowhere. So in English, when you say you're getting nowhere, it means you feel like you're not making any progress. When I look around right now, I'll show you in a second, there's jobs I didn't get done, so I kind of feel like I'm getting nowhere, but that's not entirely true. I got a lot of stuff done this summer.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is get it in writing. Sometimes you make an agreement with someone, and it's a verbal agreement, and someone might say, "Did you get it in writing?" Maybe you're going to buy a car from your cousin, and your cousin is not really trustworthy, and your cousin says, "You can have the car for $5,000," and you know the car is worth 10,000. When you talk to someone else, they might say, "Did you get it in writing?" When you get something in writing, it kind of means that it's more formal. It's more legally binding. It's an agreement where it's more than just words that have been said. You've actually gotten it in writing, and so it's, yeah, it's just a little more believable. So to review, when you're getting nowhere, it means you're just not making a lot of progress on something. I hope you don't feel that way with your English learning. I hope you feel like you're getting somewhere. That's a good phrase, too. And when you say that you want to get something in writing, to get it in writing means to actually have it written down, and usually people will sign. If you are going to buy a house, you get it in writing, and you sign the agreement that you are buying it.But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Roman. "Hi, Bob. If I won a journey around the world, I'd feel like a million bucks," and my response, "That would be a great feeling."So thanks for that comment, Roman. Yes, that would be a great feeling, wouldn't it? If you all of a sudden were able to travel all the way around the world, that would be super exciting and super fun. So by the way, Mohd Ags mentioned in a previous video that this would be my 700th video. I didn't double check that, but I've been making these for a while, and I kind of chuckled when he said that, because the only reason I started this channel is because I would go to my van in the morning to get ready to leave for work, and I have to give my kids a ride to school and I would be waiting for them. And I had a few extra moments, so I started making little one minute videos.Just a moment here. Not sure if you can see the bird. I don't know what kind of bird that is. That is a very unique sound. Let me point the microphone up. Hmm, I'll have to figure out what kind of bird that is later.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "to get a feel for" and "to feel like a million bucks"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO GET A FEEL FOR and TO FEEL LIKE A MILLION BUCKSIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to get a feel for something. When you get a feel for something, it means you do something until you know how to do it better. Here's a couple of examples. When I first made a cake and I put icing on the cake, I didn't do a very good job. I needed to do it a few times to get a feel for it. When I was younger, I worked for my uncle and he poured concrete and you would use a trowel to smooth out the concrete, and it took a while to get a feel for it. It took a while to learn how to do it well. So when you try to get a feel for something, it means you're doing something that's new to you and you're going to do it over and over again until you understand how to do it really, really well.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase to feel like a million bucks. I feel like a million bucks today. I slept really good last night and I feel really, really good. This is just one way that we describe when we're feeling energetic, when we're feeling well rested. When you just feel really, really good, you say I feel like a million bucks. Often if you're sick and then when you start to feel better, eventually you feel a lot better and you would say, I feel like a million bucks. So to review, when you get a feel for something, it means you do it over and over again until you're good at it. Maybe it's a task that you do with your hands. I'm moving my hand a lot when I'm talking about this because there are a lot of things where you need to get a feel for it like icing a cake or smoothing out fresh concrete. And when you say that you feel like a million bucks, it means that you just feel really, really good. You're having a good day. You're well rested and you just feel awesome. You feel like a million bucks. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Snazzy. The flowers are awesome. I wish I could touch and feel them and probably smell them. Amazing lesson as always. And my response, it's fun to see them, but it's also nice once they're all gone and it's December and I'm just sitting in my warm house watching the snow fall.So thanks, Snazzy, for that comment. And I do truly mean that. We love flowers. We love growing the flowers. We love harvesting and selling them, but after a long season, we do look forward to the time where we're just sitting in the house with our feet up, watching snow fall outside and just enjoying the winter season. We don't want that yet though. Like I mentioned in my other videos, we do want flowers to keep growing for a few more weeks, but certainly it is a nice feeling when it's all done and we don't have to worry too much about what's happening outside and we can just relax a little bit.Hey, I came to this creek last spring, I'm trying to turn my camera around and it was flowing. There was lots of water flowing over the little weir that they have here, but you can see now there's just a tiny bit of water flowing. We've been getting quite a bit of rain. So I'm kind of surprised that it's not a torrent of water right now, but it certainly is drier than I expected.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "open up a bit" and "keep things to yourself"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases OPEN UP A BIT and KEEP THINGS TO YOURSELFIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, open up or open up a bit. When you get to know someone, you start to share things about your life. You start to open up a bit. Sometimes you meet someone and you're not their friend yet but you slowly start to spend time together. And eventually you become friends because eventually you'll start to open up a bit when you're talking to each other. You'll talk about your families and your feelings and what's going good in life and what isn't going good. You'll just open up a bit and start to share. This often happens when people start dating each other. At first, they're more reserved and they don't talk about their personal life too much, but eventually they open up a bit and they start to talk about other things that are happening in their life that normally they would've kept private unless they're talking to someone that they trust. When you talk to someone you trust it's easy to open up a bit.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is to keep things to yourself. This is the opposite of open up a bit. When you keep things to yourself, it means you're a very private person. It means when you talk to other people, you don't talk about everything in your life. Maybe you talk about simple things, but you don't talk about how you're feeling. You don't talk about the fact that you had a bad day at work. Instead of opening up a bit, you tend to keep things to yourself. I usually keep things to myself when I first meet someone, especially someone who I don't know very well at all. Well, because I just met them. I'm not making sense there, am I? Let me rephrase. When someone new starts at work, I tend to keep things to myself for a while before I open up a bit, because I like to get to know someone before I talk about other things besides just work or the weather.Anyways, to review, when you open up or when you open up a bit it means you start to talk about more things because you're comfortable talking to that person. And when you keep things to yourself it means you're just a little more private. You're a private person and you don't want to talk about everything. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Mahdi. Hi Mahdi. Hello Bob. Wow, the flowers are blossoming nicely. I think Jen has a lot of hard work to do in the upcoming few days. And my response, yes, for sure. The last few weeks is when we harvest like mad and sell like crazy. We're always hoping too that frost doesn't happen. We don't like to lose some of the crop near the end.So yes, because I live in Canada and because we have winter and we have fall, there is a possibility that the weather will turn early in the fall. Right now it's actually September 12th today. I'm making this video a little bit early. And it's 31 degrees that is abnormal for this time of year. Normally around this time of year it's about 20, 25 degrees at the most. So that's a little warm and we're happy about that. That will just keep things growing nicely. What we're worried about is frost. We don't want it to go below zero or down to zero at night. Thankfully the nights are still quite warm in this area. But towards the end of September and the beginning of October, we start to get a little bit stressed and we start to get a little bit worried. Because if it goes to -1 or if it goes to -2, some of our flowers don't like that. Some of our flowers are fine, but some of them will die if it gets that cold. And iSupport the show

Learn the English Phrases "to school someone" and "too cool for school"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO SCHOOL SOMEONE and TOO COOL FOR SCHOOLIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase to school someone. This is a slang phrase, and it means to totally dominate someone when you're doing something together, usually a sport. Maybe you're going to play basketball with your younger brother, and you're going to school him. That means that you're going to play against him, you're going to win, and probably win by a lot of points. And it means you're gonna show him how basketball is played. You're going to school him. It's definitely something we say. And it's definitely slang when we're talking about doing something and just doing it really, really well so the other person sees how good we are at it. So when you school someone, you're not just winning. You're also kind of showing how good you are at it. You're just kind of showing off a little bit.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase too cool for school. This is an old phrase. I think it's from the 80s. I don't even know if anyone says it anymore, but it's a phrase we use to talk about someone who dresses really well, like, in a really hip way, who maybe just looks really good and they just look super cool. You might say, "Oh, they're too cool for school." It rhymes, so it's kind of fun to say. And again, it's a phrase that I'm just throwing in here for fun. Not a lot of people say this anymore, but if you watch movies from the 80s, you might hear someone use the phrase too cool for school. So to review, when you school someone, it means you play a sport against them, or even something like chess, and you play really well, and you kind of show them how the game is played. We would say that you are schooling them. And when you say someone is too cool for school, it simply means that they're really, really cool. They're too cool for school. But, hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This is from Mohd, Mohd Ags. "I think when Mr. Bob first started this channel the plan was to do a video every day or so. It was just a matter of time before he was brought back down to earth. Now he's settled for two videos a week, and I'm happy about that. P.S. Please let us know how your first day back at school went." And my reply, "Yes, I certainly bit off more than I could chew back then. Also, my first day went great."So I know you're watching this on a Friday. It's actually Wednesday when I'm, can't figure out how my tripod works. There we go. It's actually Wednesday right now when I'm making this video. So I am done, my first day of school. But let me back up a bit and reply to Mohd. Yeah, you know, I think I was a little bit naive when I started this channel. I think I was a little bit, I think I thought it was easier than it really is to make four videos a week. I would make them on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and that ended up being quite a bit of work. So eventually I started doing, I think, I did three a week for a bit, and I settled down for two. And Mohd, thank you for the comment.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "bring someone back down to earth" and "bring to a close"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases BRING SOMEONE BACK DOWN TO EARTH and BRING TO A CLOSEIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, bring someone back down to earth. This is a phrase we use to describe when life goes back to normal after someone thinks something's going to be amazing. Sometimes, students start school and they think, "Oh, it's going to be so easy, "I'm going to get 100% on every assignment," and then they write their first quiz and get barely a passing grade, and that brings them down to earth, it brings them back down to earth. Maybe sometimes when people get married, they think for the first few weeks that marriage is gonna all be awesome and amazing, which, it is, for the most part, but eventually, they might have their first fight and that might bring them back down to earth. It might make them realize that marriage is fun, but marriage is also something you need to work at, so that it goes well.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe second phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase, bring to a close. When you bring something to a close, it means you are ending it. It means, it's getting a little windy, I'm gonna move while I talk, when you bring something to a close, it means that you have decided that maybe the meeting is over, and so you decide to bring the meeting to a close. Maybe you're doing something like making an English lesson video, and you might want to bring the lesson to a close when we get close to the four minute mark. So when you bring something to a close, it means you've decided you're going to end it.So to review, when you bring someone back down to earth, or when someone is brought back down to earth, it means that they're reminded somehow, something happens that reminds them that whatever they're doing or whatever they're involved in is not as amazing or won't be as amazing all the time as maybe they think it would have been. And when you bring something to a close, it means that you bring it to an end.So this part of the lesson, I'm bringing to a close, because it's time to read a comment from a previous viewer. This comment is from Manju. "Hi, Bob, happy Teachers' Day. "In India, we celebrate September 5th as a Teachers' Day. "Once again, thanks for teaching English," and my response, "Thank you. "It's nice to feel appreciated."So I'm actually making this video on September 5th, I'm making this a little bit early, because I'm trying to get ahead. I have a very busy week, so I'm trying to pre-shoot some videos, but thank you for that comment. I do find it interesting how often people say, "Happy Teachers' Day" to me, because I think, I've mentioned this before, every country in the world has a Teachers' Day, I think, and a lot of them are all on different days. So when I started teaching on YouTube, I didn't realize that almost monthly, someone would say, "Happy Teachers' Day," and it feels really nice. So I do really, really appreciate it.Anyways, if you notice, by the way, thank you for the comment, if you notice I did get a printer, that's the wrong piece of paper, I think, one moment here. Let me find the other piece of paper. I did get a printer, so no more handwriting. You've seen my printing, you've seen my cursive writing, from now on, hopefully, this printer will do a good job. I decided not to go cheap and not to go expensive. I bought a printer that's right about in the middle, in terms of price. If you're wondering, it was just over $200 Canadian. And if you feel bad, if you think, "Oh, Bob had to spend all this money "so he could print for his YouTube chSupport the show

Learn the English Phrases "with that being said" and "enough said"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases THAT BEING SAID and ENOUGH SAIDIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, "That being said". Sometimes we say, "With that being said". This is a phrase we use after we've said something, and then we say something kind of the opposite. You might say something like this, "I don't like drinking pop or I don't like drinking soda, but with that being said, when I go to a party sometimes I have a can of Coke". I could say this, "Life is really busy with five children. It's a little crazy sometimes. But that being said, I do really enjoy having lots of kids. It is a really fun time most of the time. 99% of the time, it's a lot of fun".WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase, "Enough said". This is a phrase we use when we're done talking about something and it's time to actually do something. When Jen and I talk about going to market, today we're going to market. Actually for you, it's yesterday. Sometimes we talk about what flowers we're bringing and how we're going to put everything in the van. But eventually we say, "Okay, enough said, let's actually start doing the work". So when you say, "Enough said", it means that you've talked about something and you've talked enough, and now it's time to actually do what you said you were going to do. Anyways, enough said, I should get on with the lesson. To review, when you say, "That being said", or, "With that being said", it's when you introduce kind of a contrasting view or an opposite thought to a current discussion. And when you say, "Enough said", it means that you should stop talking and start actually getting some work done. Sometimes it's important to know when to stop talking, so that you can actually get something done. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Aleja or Aleja. I can't pronounce your name. Hopefully, I didn't mess it up too badly. "Reading the comments directly from your phone is okay. No need to print it. It's environmentally friendly. I love your videos and have learned a lot from them. My response, perhaps I'll do that more often, but I do like how reliable paper is".And I would like to repeat that, "I love how reliable paper is". In fact, one of the reasons why I usually print things to bring them outside is because it's completely reliable, it's weatherproof. I'm worried if I did everything from my phone that sometimes I would forget my phone. I might be outside and suddenly I don't have my phone, and it's time to read the comment. Then I would have to stop the video and go back in. So, paper is super reliable.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "to have something to offer" and "to make an offer"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO HAVE SOMETHING TO OFFER and TO MAKE AN OFFERIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase "to have something to offer." When you have something to offer, it means you have a skill or you know how to do something that's a benefit to someone else or to an organization. I like to think that at work, I have something to offer. I know how to speak French, I know how to use computers. I think one of the reasons they have me there, one of the reasons they hired me, is because I have something to offer. When I was in college, I often got chosen to be in groups that were doing group work, that were going to do a presentation, because I had something to offer back then. I knew how to make PowerPoint presentations, so I definitely had something to offer, and people usually wanted me in their group.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase "to make an offer." When you make an offer, it means that someone is selling something, and let's say they're selling it for a thousand dollars and you decide to offer them 800. We would say that you're going to make an offer. Maybe my friend is selling a car and he wants $5,000 for it. I might go and I might make an offer. I might say, "Hey, will you take $4,000 for your car?" So I might make an offer. So to review, when you have something to offer, it means you know how to do something, you have a unique trait, or you're able to do something that other people maybe can't do, and you are a benefit to someone else or to a group. And when you say that you're going to make an offer, it means that someone is selling something and you're going to offer them some money. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Judit. "Repetition is the road to learning, "even though it is very monotonous." And my response is, "Monotonous is a very good word to describe it." So yes, Judit, repetition is awesome, but it is monotonous. And I was reading that off my phone, and you might have noticed that I hand wrote the words today. Well, something weird happened over the weekend. The power went out very briefly, and I didn't think anything of it. It was a fairly normal thing. Sometimes the power goes out. But then today when I went to print, my printer didn't work. I think it's shot, which was a phrase I taught you a few weeks ago. The two green lights come on and they don't blink, they don't do anything. I can't access the printer on the network. I think it's shot. I don't think my printer is going to work anymore. So I'm going to troubleshoot it over the next couple of days. I'm gonna try and figure out what was happening.Support the show

Learn the English Phrases "a hard pill to swallow" and "to be hard hit"
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English terms A HARD PILL TO SWALLOW and TO BE HARD HITIn this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, a hard pill to swallow. Sometimes we say a tough pill to swallow. When you have an experience in life that you describe as a hard pill to swallow, it means it's a difficult situation, or it's something that's just not very nice. The other day, I talked about needing to get something fixed on my van. The mechanic said it was going to be $1,000. That's a bit of a hard pill to swallow. The other day, I was driving my van, and I saw someone on the side of the road, and there was steam coming out from the front of their vehicle. That might be a hard pill to swallow, especially when they go to get it fixed. It might be really, really expensive. So when you're describing something that isn't pleasant, or something that you don't actually enjoy, you might say that it's a hard pill to swallow.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? GO TO YOUTUBE AND SEARCH, "BOB THE CANADIAN"If you enjoy these lessons please consider supporting me at: http://www.patreon.com/bobthecanadianThe other phrase I wanted to teach you today is to be hard hit. So when you're hard hit by something, it means that it's very, very difficult or trying. You could say this, a lot of restaurants were hard hit during the pandemic. They didn't have a lot of customers, and it was very, very difficult for them to make money. They were hard hit during the pandemic. By the way, I can switch the words as well, and I can say the restaurants were hit hard during the pandemic, and it means exactly the same thing. So you could say restaurants were hard hit during the pandemic. They weren't allowed to be open, and they didn't have a lot of sales, and it was very difficult for them. Or you could say they were hit hard as well.So to review, when you say that something is a hard pill to swallow, or a tough pill to swallow, it means it's something that you don't wanna do. It's something that you're experiencing that isn't very nice. And when you say that something is hard hit or hit hard, it means that they've taken a bit of a wallop. It means they went through a time that wasn't very good for them.Hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Denis, or in English, we would say Dennis, but it usually has two N's then. The comment is this. "A very good lesson, I will listen to it in a couple of hours for repetition." And my response, "That's a great plan."So I've mentioned this a lot of times as I teach English. I think repetition is very, very valuable. The problem with repetition is it's not very enjoyable. So it's one of those things in life that's valuable, but not enjoyable. Think of it this way. If you read a book, it's very difficult to reread the book right away. If you watch a TV show, it can be fun and enjoyable and you just love it, but thinking about watching it again immediately, it's not as exciting, is it? You won't have the same experience if you watch it for a second time, it will be something where you...Sorry, there's a vehicle driving in. I'll show you for a sec. It looks like there's a van driving in, now they're backing up. And then now they're going to drive out. So maybe someone was here for flowers.Support the show

Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases AS GOOD AS GOLD and TO HAVE A HEART OF GOLDIn this English lesson I wanted to help you learn the English phrase as good as gold. Now this can be a phrase we use to talk about behavior, usually children's behavior or just something that's good again, here's a couple of examples. When our kids were little, sometimes my sister would babysit for us. And when we came home, my sister would say, your kids were as good as gold all night. That means that the children behaved. They listened to her. They weren't mean, they didn't do anything bad. They were as good as gold. They were really good. Our kids were usually as good as gold. That's not actually true. We also use this to talk about something that is whole again or good again. I actually twisted my ankle and someone asked about it in the comments and I replied and said, oh, it's as good as gold now.WANT FREE ENGLISH LESSONS? When someone has a heart of gold, it means they're really kind. It means they're very truthful. It means they're just a really, really good person. Whenever I think of someone who has a heart of gold, I always think of my grandmother. When I was a kid, my grandmother has passed away by the way. But when I was a kid, my grandmother definitely had a heart of gold. She was always kind, she always gave us candy. She was always ready to listen if we wanted to talk to her, she was a really, really nice person. So my grandmother had a heart of gold.So to review, when you say something is as good as gold, it can mean that someone's behavior is really good or it can mean something that was broken or sore is now better. And when you say that someone has a heart of gold, to have a heart of gold means that you are very kind, you are very pleasant and you are very helpful. But hey, let's look at a comment from a previous video. This comment is from Brent from Speak English With This Guy. And Brent says no way, just yesterday the guy who fixed my car said the tire was shot when I picked it up, and my reply, I hope it didn't cost too much to get it fixed. So once again, the video from, or the lesson from a few days ago, I talked about the phrase, it's shot. And Brent is saying that when he went to the garage, the mechanic said his tire was shot. So obviously Brent got it fixed. And hopefully it didn't cost him too much.Hey, we have a couple vehicles and sometimes we get things fixed on them as well. This red van just recently went in for an oil change. That's all done now, there was one other thing wrong with it. The ignition, when you turn the key, it doesn't always work properly. So instead of just telling the mechanic to fix it, I said, why don't you give me a quote? So he's going to figure out how much that would cost. And then he's going to let me know how much it's going to be. I didn't wanna say, go ahead and fix it 'cause I thought it might be really, really pricey. My blue van is right here. My blue van has been very, very reliable. In English, when we say something like that, like something's been reliable. We also then say, I should knock on wood. Maybe I should go to the tree here and knock on wood. When you say something has been going good or it's been very reliable and then you say you should knock on wood. It's for good luck 'cause I don't want something to go wrong with it right now. Support the show
