The Bible is not just a book full of promises, rules or doctrines. Fundamentally, it is the true story of God, the universe, and humanity. Like a great drama, it proceeds through several acts, with God as the author and director of the drama, and indeed the main character who walks onto the stage. The Bible is the drama of God’s mission, God’s grand purpose to reconcile all creation, and people from all nations, to himself – promised through Israel, accomplished by Christ, completed in the new creation. God, the inventor of Sabbath, invites his people to enter his rest (Hebrews 4:9-11). But, in a fallen world, even in our busy service of God, we can feel more like Cain, who was cursed to be, “a restless wanderer” (Genesis 4:12). When we understand the Bible as the drama of the mission of God, we then need to see that we are participants in the drama. We are actors “in the Bible” – somewhere between the resurrection of Christ and the return of Christ! So what does it mean to see the Bible and ourselves in this way, in relation to the mission of God? Spoiler alert: it changes a lot, because we are part of the story itself, not just spectators, or those who support other people to “get the job done”. Mission is God’s story. There are many aspects or dimensions to Christian mission, but what is utterly central is the gospel itself, the biblical good news of what God has done in Christ for the salvation of the world, and what that will ultimately mean for humanity and creation. Around that centrality of the gospel we can integrate at least five different “marks of mission”, all with deep roots in the Bible. Gospel-centred integral mission means that we hold together all that God sends us into the world to do around the good news of God’s kingdom at work in the world since Christ’s life, death, resurrection and ascension. So we serve society in works of compassion and justice, and live out our creational responsibility, in Christ’s name, under his authority, and for his glory.
