Which is scary and could be triggering for a number of people. Dr Nasha Winters, who has suffered with cancer herself, does not shy away from the realities of our toxic environment and dealing with cravings for addictive foods so if you feel that you may be triggered by these descriptions then I reckon this is probably not the podcast to listen to.Part of the reason why we wanted to release this episode, despite it being slightly out of the norm of our typically conversation, is because we need to build mental resilience to these realities. Unfortunately we have a toxic environment, and in fact in December 2020 Southwark Coroner's Court found that air pollution "made a material contribution" to the death of 9 year old Ella Kiss-Debrah in 2013, after over two years of severe asthma attacks and cardiac arrests that led to multiple hospital visits. #173 Herbs that Heal with Simon Mills

Today on the podcast I have the pleasure of talking to Simon Mills, a complementary health pioneer from the inception of the term in 1979, and later in the fields of integrated health, selfcare and social prescription.He graduated from University of Cambridge with a degree in medical sciences and has been a herbal practitioner in Exeter since 1977. He was Special Adviser to the House of Lords Select Committee 2000 report on Complementary and Alternative Medicine. In 2016 he was appointed as Herbal Strategist at Pukka Herbs, leading new initiatives, clinical research, and most recently reducing antibiotic demand.Within herbal medicine, he established the first Masters programme in the USA, writing seminal textbooks, and publishing research including randomised controlled clinical trials.I never managed to source the herbs to support my liver prior to my stag party so I can’t attest to those! #171 Uric acid and metabolic health with Dr David Perlmutter MD

When I was at medical school the subject of Uric acid levels was typically paired with gout, high purine levels in the diet and one of the most ubiquitous drugs, allopurinol, which is used to reduce uric acid levels by inhibiting xanthine oxidase, preventing crystals that can lodge in our joints causing pain.But there is a lot more to do with uric acid than just gout as you’ll hear on today’s podcast. In fact there’s so much more, I’m surprised I haven’t come across more on this subject in the past.Dr. Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist and six-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition and as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. #170 Reverse Diabetes with Dr David Unwin

Dr David Unwin is on the podcast with Sakina today. Many of you will recognise him as the GP from the Norwood Surgery in Southport, who is a strong advocate of lifestyle medicine and a low carb diet. To date 110 of his patients have achieved drug free remission of their T2 Diabetes. He is the RCGP National Champion for Collaborative Care and Support Planning in Obesity and Diabetes and a RCGP Clinical Expert in Diabetes. His work on diabetes has been published in multiple journals and it is pretty impressive. But Dr Unwin’s work is unconventional and doesn’t come without criticism from many academics who fear that a low carb strategy is not an appropriate diet longterm.What I like about Unwins approach is the simplicity of it and how achievable it has proven to be for many of his patients. I also believe he genuinely cares about this huge problem.What I feel this conversation lacks is a deep dive into mechanisms behind low carb diets, the applicability of it to the wider population, the pitfalls and where people can slip up.
