Episode 71 - Cushla Young - Seizing the Day in Paradise
Show Notes – Cushla Young Lisa and Cushla met on one of Lisa’s running retreats. Started running half marathons 7 – 8 year ago. Had run three by the time she met Lisa. She went to one of Lisa’s seminars and was really inspired. She booked a weekend retreat and then helped out on the next retreat. At that point she started doing full marathons. Talk about not being natural athletes. Also talk about identifying yourself as “a runner.” It wasn’t about speed, or being at the front of the pack, it was about running and what it did for her outlook on life. Lisa tells the story of when both Cushla and Lisa’s Mums were in the same hospital at the same time. Cushla and her husband turned up with a big bowl and a plan, and kindly washed Lisa’s Mum’s hair. It was a very touching moment of compassion and friendship. A story of Carpe Diem – seize the day. Cushla and her husband Richard both had good jobs, loved their lives in New Plymouth and weren’t thinking about any big change. Their friends called up from Tonga and suggested they pack up their dog and come on over in order to manage their second resort. It took a month to make up their minds and then Cushla took a year’s sabbatical from her teaching career. Cushla and Lisa both refer to their fertility issues. When you don’t have kids you have got to make your own lives; you have to be a bit more active in finding joy in life. Lisa asks how the reality compares to the fantasy we all have of running away to a tropical island. 12 bungalows and a restaurant at the resort. It is very isolated being based on one of the outlying islands. 18 x 1 kilometres in size. Their local town has one shop – a cross between a $2 shop and a bad dairy. There are long hours and not many days off. Most of the food comes via ship from New Zealand or the main island of Tonga so they have to plan their menus and supplies two months in advance. There is some fresh fruit available. Most people in the island grow food for themselves not for supplying others. When things break you can’t get them fixed quickly and that puts pressure on things. The only water is rain water supply so you have to preserve this. They have fun with the guests. Often they arrive quite stressed and it is fascinating to watch people begin to relax over the first few days. Humpback whale season starts mid July. They travel from Antarctica to give birth and take care of their babies. They send out eight boats a day with only four people in the water at any one time. The whales are very curious. It takes your breath away. Whales have a deep mindful eye. Each whale pod has a song and it changes slightly each season. Cushla is not a natural outdoorsy adventurous person. The first time she went swimming with the whales she had a Go Pro with her. She ended up recording a sound track of her hyperventilating. Then she stopped breathing for about two minutes when the whales turned up. They have to steal moments in the day to go and enjoy the island. Some days are easier to do that than others. She has realised that this year is about chilling out and just enjoying the experience. She learned to change her mindset and realise that she doesn’t have to be the best resort manager the world has ever seen. Tells the story of the two wolves inside us. The bad wolf and the good wolf are always fighting inside. Which wolf wins? The one that you feed. You still have bad days – even if you live in paradise; you’re just a bit hotter. Realise you don’t have to get tangled up in the things that don’t really matter. Learning to focus on the joy of being on the island, of meeting people from all over the world, cooking an amazing meal, spending time with her husband. Talks about struggling a little without the large support network that she has back home in New Zealand. She talks about having to help herself through hard times. Lisa talks about how nature helps to ground her and to cope when times get hard. Cushla walks on the beach with her dog and listens to audible books and podcasts. Reconnecting with herself. Always remember you are always the same person no matter where you are. Every day you choose what you focus on and same days this can be hard. Forgive yourself when you have those days that just don’t work out like you thought it would. Be kind to yourself. Don’t expect yourself to be superwoman. Take the opportunities that do come. Ep 70: Running - It's cheaper than Therapy
Running as Therapy – Show Notes Why running is cheaper than therapy. Why do you do all this long-distance running? For me running is so much more than just a sport, a way to keep fit. It is a way of life. It is what I have used for my therapy. It has literally saved my life. Why running is so powerful as a means of mental health. Movement in nature is the key point. You find out so much about who you are and what you are capable of. It helps you overcome the chatter that you have going on constantly in your brain. When I go running that chatter slows down. It takes about 20 minutes to get rid of the day’s grind then once you start to connect with your body and nature, your mind and your processes start to clear. It is a wonderful time for reflection. It is a very powerful mechanism to help find balance. We are living in a very artificial environment. This is not how our ancestors lived. We are disconnected from our true nature. How blue light is affecting us. Inundated with messages from people all around the world who are struggling with mental health issues and massive challenges. It is a privilege to hear these stories and try to help them. I have tried to share with people the honest journey that I go through; the highs, the lows, the challenges. I think people are hungering for real human connection. With our run training we start with the mindset, the motivation and helping them with their mental struggles before we get onto the nuts and bolts of running. We can help them on a much deeper level. Wanted to share the back story and why I say running helped save my life. In my early 20s I was in an abusing controlling relationship. I was in a constant state of being pushed beyond my limits physically and being constantly told that I was useless. Went from being an equal partnership to being controlled completely. My mindset was all about survival. Talks about her horrendous journey across the Libyan desert in which her relationship unravelled. It took a long time to recover physically but the mental scars left her a broken person for a long long time. It took running to put her back together. The Marathon de Sables. Surrounded by positive people that she hadn’t been for years. She found like minded wonderful crazy people. She felt encourages and confident. Did really well in the race and then wanted more and more. I wasn’t as useless as I had been told. Running became my therapy and hence the title of the podcast. What followed was 25 years of mad adventures. Had grown up in a family that valued mental and physical toughness. Weakness was not tolerated. Took me years to find my way back. Running has given me so much. I learned so much about what I am capable of. I can overcome my fears. I learned team work, I learned how to market myself, to speak, business, leading with a vision. Having good daily ways of coping and de-pressurising ourselves. If you are facing mental health issues, if you are in a difficult relationship etc, you are not alone. There are lots of people going through a lot of things and finding strength from each other and in telling our stories. I hope this gives you the courage to feel not alone and that you can find a way through. I encourage you to take up an outdoor sport. Find your peace with yourself and get back on the road to recovery. Reach out to people who can help you. Find like-minded people. All my life I’ve felt like a fish out of water in the workforce. I cannot stand to be in an office environment. I felt like it was all my fault because I wasn’t getting ahead in my career. But I was always an entrepreneur. I want to be independent, I don’t fit in anyone else’s square. I like to say I am unemployable. It doesn’t mean we are lazy, or dumb, or there is something wrong with us. It just means that we haven’t found our tribe yet. Find your tribe who will help you be the best version of you that you can be. Never, ever, give up. Fail, fail fast and keep going. Never stop. Ep 65: Paul Pritchard - Cutting Edge Extreme Rock Climber who suffered a traumatic brain injury
Paul was an extreme rock climber and mountaineer from the UK. His adventures took him from Europe to the Himalayas, the Karakoram to Patagonia, Baffin Island to Australia On Friday the 13th of February 1998 a TV-sized boulder falling from 25 meters inflicted such terrible head injuries that doctors thought he might never walk or even speak again. Being in hospital for a year gave Paul the impetus to write his second book: The Totem Pole in 2000. This narrative about his personal journey through hemiplegia also won the Boardman/Tasker prize and the Banff Mountain Book Festival Grand Prize and was translated into four languages. Nominated for the Banff Prize, The Longest Climb followed in 2005. He has continued to lead a challenging life, climbing Kilimanjaro, caving, sea kayaking, river rafting and, in 2009, lead rock climbing again. Paul rode a recumbent trike through Tibet to Mount Everest and, in 2016 he finally climbed the Totem Pole, 18 years after his accident. His latest journey was the 2152 km World Expeditions Lowest to Highest Expedition. Paul has spent his time since the accident in contemplation of the hemiplegia which has robbed his right side of movement and continues to play tricks with his speech and memory. He sees the accident as a precious gift and describes it as the best thing that has ever happened to him. He is a passionate believer that without the mountains he climbed, and moreso the Totem Pole accident, he would not have learnt some crucial life lessons. Those lessons learned in the mountains got him through a harrowing injury, and the painfully slow recovery process has engendered a life lived in the moment. "I use them still, repeatedly, each day of my second, radically different life." When he won the Boardman/Tasker Award for mountain literature in 1997, with his book Deep Play, he spent the prize money on a world climbing tour that found him in Tasmania climbing a slender sea stack known as The Totem Pole. It was here that all he had known before was turned on its head. Ep 63: Heather Hawkins - Aventurous spirit
At 41 - with two teenagers and a contentedly unadventurous life - Heather Hawkins made a doctor's appointment. Diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer, within nine days she had surgery to remove an 18cm tumour, and a full hysterectomy. Instead of chemotherapy, she chose a non-invasive surveillance treatment. The experience reignited Heather's adventurous and invincible spirit. At 47 she pulled on an old pair of shorts and runners and struggled to the end of a 4km mothers' day fun run with her kids. Five years later she has 17 marathons and 3 ultra marathons under her belt, including the North Pole Marathon and the extraordinary World Marathon Challenge - a gruelling seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. She topped that off by trekking 1700km in the thin air of Nepal's Great Himalaya Trail. And she's only just getting started ... 'Heather's courage is immeasurable. She has unstoppable conviction and an energy that inspires and amazes me' - Robert de Castella - AO MBE, Australian Former World champion Marathon Runner In this interview Lisa digs deep beyond the glib facts of Heather's adventures to find out what makes this lady tick, how she managed within just 5 years to go from being totally sedentary to a full on extreme ultra runner, to run in all four corners of the world.
