Punk Rock Vegan Movie discussion

On this show, we discuss the new documentary film written and directed by musician and animal rights advocate Moby. The film is called Punk Rock Vegan Movie and spans a number of decades examining the ongoing relationship between the worlds of punk music and animal rights, and how punk ideology is associated with animal rights activism and veganism. The film premiered in January 2023 at the Slamdance Film Festival and is freely available to watch on Moby's YouTube channel. https://moby.com/news/punk-rock-vegan-movie/  The film, which is Moby’s directorial debut, includes interviews with some of the biggest names in punk and rock history, like Ian Mackaye, HR, Dave Navarro, Ray Cappo, Andrew Hurley, Tony Kanal, Tim McIlrath, Water Schreifels, Dave Dictor, Derrick Green, Steve Ignorant, Theo Kogan, Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein, Amy Lee, and Captain Sensible.    Slamdance Film Festival wrote about the film: Moby tells the story of how punk rock became such a fertile and surprising breeding ground for vegan activism. It’s also a call to action, unapologetically reminding people that in a deeply broken world it’s incumbent upon each of us to stand up and fight intelligently, passionately, and loudly against injustice. The music we played on the show: No More by Youth of Today https://open.spotify.com/track/0iaFyLheLTw1t7vcD53ywt?si=8be0f6d0a43e481d Cats & Dogs by Gorilla Biscuits https://open.spotify.com/track/0zTfHKPhGwV3Y90EfTztLy?si=69d066d6cff04240 Chicken Squawk by MDC https://open.spotify.com/track/5bhHq796ahqwk70E5fc47M?si=5feea64329fc413e Time Out by Crass  https://open.spotify.com/track/4HWJf7CGgE9Rdhwd0TVM4b?si=ba7cf9c73bef4c50 Please subscribe to 3CR Radical Radio:  3CR relies on our listeners and supporters to remain on-air, on-line and on point. Go Vegan Campaigns: do they advance or detract from animal liberation?

In our first show back for 2023 we talk about some popular Go Vegan campaigns such as Veganuary that encourage people to try adopting a vegan diet for 30 days and provide email support resources and cookbooks. We discuss whether these campaigns can frame veganism as a diet through the focus on food and miss the broader ethical considerations of animal liberation, or are they a critical first step for vegan curious people who are searching for information and the support that will help them make the transition. For further information on the campaigns and organisations we discussed, please see:  Veganuary https://veganuary.com/en-au/ Vegan Easy (Animal Liberation Victoria) https://www.veganeasy.org/ Vegan4Life (Animal Liberation Queensland) https://www.vegan4life.org.au/ World Plant Milk Day https://www.worldplantmilkday.com/ Food Empowerment Project https://foodispower.org/ Project Fresh Start holds community lunches at the Uniting Church, High St Frankston, Victoria on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month from 12pm.  https://www.facebook.com/projectfreshstart21/  Music we played on the show: Stray by The Teethers https://open.spotify.com/track/795sHubR0hPX90dETXYgPI?si=964ca12697f344ee Everything is great by Alice Skye https://open.spotify.com/track/5o7idEY12ht7TrTHu5e4fG?si=fa7506754c8f43a8 Shouting Out by Motor Vehicle Rundown   If you have any feedback about the show or the campaigns we discussed, we'd love to hear from you. Questioning Trickle Down Identity Politics (Summer Special)

On this Summer Special Nick from Freedom of Species and Lottie discuss what journalist Naomi Klein refers to as trickle down identity politics. This form of identity politics, typified by people such as Hillary Clinton, prioritises achieving a more diverse range of people in positions of power, with the argument that if more people from marginalised groups get into positions of power, these benefits will eventually “trickle down” to that group as a whole.   We do this drawing on the following article that Nick has written: https://progressivepostings.wordpress.com/2021/02/26/idpols3/  This show is a 3CR Summer Special – see here for other Specials: https://www.3cr.org.au/summerspecials2022-2023  Music: Why Are You Like This?
