250: The Mysterious Burari Deaths

In the early morning hours of July 1st, 2018, a neighbor of the Chundawat family in the Burari neighborhood in Delhi, India was puzzled when he saw that their shops still weren’t open. The milk had been delivered to the grocery shop, but it had not yet been brought inside. Customers were waiting outside to make purchases, but none had seen the Chundawats. Concerned, the neighbor climbed the stairs to the family’s home and found the main door open. He pushed through the door and into the home and saw what he thought might be a horrible nightmare. Hanging from an iron grate in the ceiling were nine bodies. Another body was hanging across the room from the others. The eleventh member of the Chundawat family, the grandmother, was laying on the floor beside a bed, with a belt and scarf wrapped around her neck. All eleven members of the family were dead, but nobody could understand why. Had the Chundawat family been part of a ritualistic mass suicide or were they the victims of murder? 249: The Mysterious Disappearance of the Humboldt Five

Between the years of 1993 and 2014, five young women between the ages of 16 and 37 disappeared in Humboldt County, California. Unlike the large majority of missing persons cases, these five have not been solved. While not all of the cases are believed to be connected, the five women were grouped together due to the suspicious circumstances of their disappearances and the lack of answers in their cases. The five women, now known as the Humboldt Five, are still either missing or presumed dead, with very little evidence and no resolutions. What happened to the Humboldt Five? 247: Adnan Syed- Part 2

Part 2 of 2: On January 13th, 1999, 18-year-old high school senior, Hae Min Lee was reported missing by her family. She’d been leaving school that day, but had never arrived to pick up her younger cousin from school. In the time span of less than 30 minutes it seemed, the young woman had vanished. Less than a month later, Hae’s body was found in a park, partially buried. She had been strangled to death. The investigation that ensued resulted in Hae’s ex-boyfriend, 17-year-old Adnan Syed, being convicted of her murder and sentenced to life in prison. However, after a judge recently ruled that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence that could’ve altered the jury’s verdict, Adnan’s sentence was vacated. Shortly after, the state dropped the charges against him. Was Adnan Syed wrongly convicted? Was his counsel ineffective or was he truly proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt? 245: Yuba County 5

On Friday, February 24th, 1978, five young men left their homes to head to a basketball game at Chico State in Chico, California. This was the boys’ favorite team and they had a basketball tournament they were playing in themselves the next day. They were known as the Gateway Gators and were competing in the Special Olympics. The game ended and the boys’ favorite team won. They left the school and stopped at a nearby service station to grab snacks before the hour drive home together. Unfortunately, the young men never made it home. Months later, remains were found in the mountains of the Plumas National Forest. The young men, rather than continue south down the interstate, in a straight shot to their hometown, had veered east and continued in the wrong direction for quite some distance. Their car was found abandoned. Four of the young men were found dead. People assumed that because four of the young men were described as “slow” or mentally disabled, they’d just gotten lost, but their families knew better. They still, to this day, believe that the young men were victims of foul play. With one man still missing, there are no answers to this case, only theories and rumors. What happened to the Yuba County Five? TRIGGER WARNINGS: outdated terminology for intellectually and developmentally disabled, that can be considered offensive now (these words were used to describe the men at the time when it was more acceptable). 244: 244: Serial Killer Larry Hall and the Inside Man Jimmy Keene

Larry Hall is a murderer, rapist, and suspected serial killer.  Authorities believe that Hall was active throughout the 80s and into the early 90s.  Hall was arrested in 1994, and eventually confessed to kidnapping 15 year old Jessica Roach.  Although Jessica Roach had been abducted and murdered, Hall didn’t confess to murdering her.  While waiting for an appeal to his conviction, the FBI feared that Hall might be released and reached out to another prisoner, James Keene, and sent him undercover to try to obtain a confession from Hall. 243: Serial Killer: Gainesville Ripper

In late August 1990, Gainesville, Florida fell victim to a serial killer. Over the span of less than a week, five college students were brutally murdered in their homes. Police couldn’t figure out who was behind the gruesome attacks and the Gainesville community was absolutely terrified. Doors were triple locked and roommates were sleeping in shifts. A suspect was jailed, but the DNA didn’t match. Meanwhile, a man was jailed in Ocala, Florida, the suspect of multiple armed robberies. Two completely different types of crimes, and no one suspected that that robberies and the murders were committed by the same person. To their suprise, they were wrong, and the man responsible for the Gainesville murders and countless armed robberies, was actually already in prison. Unbeknownst to detectives though, Danny Rolling’s murders in Gainesville weren’t his first. Rolling had killed before he’d even entered the state of Florida, annihilating an entire family, all before he was fearfully dubbed the Gainesville Ripper.
