257: MMIW- The Murder of Sonya Ivanoff (FREE Weekly Episode)

Just after midnight on August 11th, 2003, Alaskan native, Sonya Ivanoff parted ways with her best friend and began the short walk home to her apartment from her friend’s house. This would be the last time that 19-year-old Sonya was seen alive by her best friend. A few days later, Sonya’s nude body was found just a few miles outside of her hometown of Nome, Alaska. She’d been shot once in the back of the head. Unfortunately, investigators were unable to find any DNA or obvious evidence at the scene or on Sonya’s body. They couldn’t understand how a perpetrator could leave zero DNA evidence behind. As they progressed in the investigation, two witnesses came forward and dropped a bombshell on them about Sonya’s last moments that night. What came next made the entire community of Nome, and even Alaska, question if they were really safe. **TRIGGER WARNING: MMIW, sexual assault, murder** Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/G89VUbujX7Q Hang with us: Follow Us on Instagram Like Us on Facebook Join our Case Discussion Group on Facebook Get Killer Queens Merch Bonus Episodes Support Our AMAZING Sponsors: Babbel: Right now, get up to 55% off your subscription when you go to BABBEL.com/queens. Introducing COLD: The Search for Sheree

Sheree Warren left her job in Salt Lake City on a mild October evening in 1985. She told a coworker she was headed to meet her estranged husband, Charles Warren, at a car dealership. But she never made it, Sheree vanished. When her car mysteriously surfaced weeks later, hundreds of miles away in Las Vegas, no one could say how it got there. When a young mother disappears under unexplained circumstances, police always turn suspicious eyes towards the husband. And although there was distrust around Charles Warren, he wasn’t the only suspect when Sheree went missing. She also had a boyfriend, a former cop named Cary Hartmann, who lived a sinister double life. Season three follows two suspects– men who both raised suspicion for investigators. But with two strong persons of interest with competing facts and evidence, it muddied the murder investigation. This season, host Dave Cawley, digs into the lives of these two men, the details of the case and examines the intersections between domestic abuse and sexual violence. The COLD team seeks to answer the question: what really happened to Sheree Warren? Hey Prime Members, you can binge all 10 episodes of COLD: The Search for Sheree ad-free on Amazon Music. 253: The Station Nightclub Fire

***TRIGGER WARNING*** Death and Injury from Trampling, Fire, and Smoke Inhalation On the evening of February 20th, 2003, hundreds of people had filled The Station Nightclub in Warwick, Rhode Island.  They were all there for a concert headlined by Great White, a rock band that formed in the late 70s, and has been together ever since, even though some members have changed over the years.  Before the band was even able to finish their first song though, a fire ignited that quickly spread throughout the venue.  100 people lost their lives that night, and 230 more were injured.  132 people escaped without any physical injuries, but the trauma from the night remains with them. 252: The Murder of Brittany Zimmerman

On April 2, 2008, Brittany Zimmermann had just returned home to her off campus apartment from class at the University of Wisconsin Madison when she was brutally attacked and murdered.  Despite making a 911 call during her attack, police didn’t arrive on scene until 48 minutes later when her fiance found her in their bedroom and placed another call to 911.  Was the lack of dispatch the reason it took 14 years for her killer to be caught or was it simply a case of lack of evidence? 251: Chino Hills Massacre

On Sunday, June 5th, 1983, Bill Hughes drove the short distance from his home to the home of Peggy and Doug Ryen. Bill’s son, 11-year-old Chris, had a sleepover that night with the Ryens’ son, Josh. There was no answer at the front door and the Ryens’ car was missing. When he peeked in through a sliding glass door in the back of home, Bill thought what he was seeing was some sort of prank. Unfortunately, it wasn’t. Inside the home were the bodies of Doug, Peggy, and Jessica Ryen, and Bill’s son, Chris. Josh Ryen, the youngest boy, had somehow survived what turned out to have been a brutal massacre. Several months later, despite many lingering questions about the murders, a man was charged and ultimately sentenced to death. Was Kevin Cooper guilty of a quadruple homicide or had he been framed? 250: The Mysterious Burari Deaths

In the early morning hours of July 1st, 2018, a neighbor of the Chundawat family in the Burari neighborhood in Delhi, India was puzzled when he saw that their shops still weren’t open. The milk had been delivered to the grocery shop, but it had not yet been brought inside. Customers were waiting outside to make purchases, but none had seen the Chundawats. Concerned, the neighbor climbed the stairs to the family’s home and found the main door open. He pushed through the door and into the home and saw what he thought might be a horrible nightmare. Hanging from an iron grate in the ceiling were nine bodies. Another body was hanging across the room from the others. The eleventh member of the Chundawat family, the grandmother, was laying on the floor beside a bed, with a belt and scarf wrapped around her neck. All eleven members of the family were dead, but nobody could understand why. Had the Chundawat family been part of a ritualistic mass suicide or were they the victims of murder? Unlike the large majority of missing persons cases, these five have not been solved. While not all of the cases are believed to be connected, the five women were grouped together due to the suspicious circumstances of their disappearances and the lack of answers in their cases. The five women, now known as the Humboldt Five, are still either missing or presumed dead, with very little evidence and no resolutions. What happened to the Humboldt Five?
