In June of 2010, La’Rene Austin rushed into the Palmdale Sheriff’s Office saying that she found her best friend Lanell Barsock dead in her garage. She was covered in blood and frantic. She spoke with detectives and was able to tell them that she saw the man who did it, LaNell’s boyfriend Louis. 367: April Fools Pranks Gone Wrong
Before we get into some foolish April Fools pranks that didn’t quite land, let’s talk about the origin of April Fools Day. The oldest historical reference for April Fools Day comes from a Flemish poem written in 1561 about a nobleman who sent his servant on “fool’s errands” on April 1st. In about the same era in France, the people were slow to adapt to the calendar change from the last week of March to January 1st to mark the new year. It was a move from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar that was decreed by the Council of Trent. Those who struggled to adjust were called “April fools,” and many began playing tricks on them. Another reference is with the Catholic Church. In medieval France and England, a carnival of sorts, called “Feast of Fools” was held on January 1st, but was banned by the 15th century. Though, it was still held for hundreds of years, despite the ban. Then by the 19th century, April Fools’ Day was a part of American culture. Mark Twain was quoted as saying, “The first of April is the day we remember what we are the other 364 days of the year.” Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here! 365: The Murder of Kitty Genovese and the Implementation of 911
On March 13th, 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was heading home from work in the early morning hours. After parking her car, she was making the short walk to her apartment when she heard footsteps behind her. When she attempted to flee, the man followed her and attacked. After someone saw them and yelled out, the attacker left. However, he returned and attacked Kitty for a second time. Though there were several witnesses who heard something, only two had made a call to police. The amount of witnesses was exaggerated and the details and facts of Kitty’s murder were incorrectly reported. However, Kitty’s death has resulted in several studies, laws, and the unified 911 system.Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here! We've made them available for free to anyone who signs up! 361: The Kidnapping and Murder of Exxon Exec Sidney Reeso
In April of 1992, Exxon executive Sidney Reso left for work like he did every day. When his car was discovered running in his driveway, the police and FBI were called. They quickly began an investigation into Sidney’s disappearance, which they learned was an abduction. After cooperating with the kidnappers and getting together the 18.5 million dollar ransom though, the kidnappers began to make sporadic contact, often days and weeks between phone calls. This lasted for 51 days before a break which led the kidnappers right to the FBI, and we ultimately found out what happened to Sidney Reso. Want access to our first 45 episodes? Grab em here! 360: Amber Dubois and Chelsea King
On February 13th, 2009, 14-year-old Amber Dubois disappeared into thin air on her way to school in San Diego County, California. There were credible leads or sightings, and it seemed as though Amber was just…gone. Almost exactly one year later, 17-year-old Chelsea King went for a run in a well-populated park, just ten miles from where Amber disappeared, and never returned. Clothing belonging to Chelsea was found nearby and a DNA match was found, leading detectives to a registered sex offender by the name of John Albert Gardner. Who was Gardner, and was he responsible for more than just Chelsea’s disappearance? Had he, just one year prior, abducted Amber Dubois off the street on her way to school?
