#358 Jefferson and the Meaning of Religious Freedom - Dr. John Ragosta

Jefferson and the Meaning of Religious Freedom - Dr. John Ragosta Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #358. Today's show is brought to you by AutoSlash. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author Interview series, we are joined today by historian, best-selling, award winning author Dr. John Ragosta. Dr John Ragosta will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, June 17, 2019, and the title of his presentation is Jefferson and the Meaning of Religious Freedom For 200 years, Thomas Jefferson and his Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom have stood at the center of our understanding of religious liberty and the First Amendment. Jefferson's expansive vision—including his insistence that political freedom and free thought would be at risk if we did not establish a strict separation of church and state—enjoyed a near consensus of support at the Supreme Court and among historians until 1985 when Justice William Rehnquist called reliance on Jefferson "demonstrably incorrect" as a matter of history. But, the Statue for Establishing Religious Freedom is quite powerful, persuasive and even, as Dr. Ragosta points out, "Poetic." Let's listen as Dr. Ragosta reads briefly from Jefferson's statute about why Jefferson felt that freedom of religion is so essential to establishing a functioning American republic. #357 Secrets of the Cuban Revolution - Tony Perrottet

Secrets of the Cuban Revolution - Tony Perrottet Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #357. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living author Interview series, we are joined today by author Tony Perrottet. Tony Perrottet will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program, June 3, 2019, and the title of his presentation is Secrets of the Cuban Revolution. Most people are familiar with the basics of the Cuban Revolution of 1956 to 1959: It was led by two of the 20th century's most charismatic figures, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara; it successfully overthrew the island nation's U.S.-backed dictator, Fulgencio Batista; and it quickly went awry under Castro's rule. But less is remembered about the amateur nature of the upstart movement or the lives of its players. To mark the 60th anniversary of the revolution, Smithsonian magazine writer Tony Perrottet draws on his new book ¡Cuba Libre!: Che, Fidel, and the Improbable Revolution That Changed World History to offer a look at some of the human drama that played out against the backdrop of political upheaval. Tony Perrottet surveys how a scruffy handful of self-taught subversives, many of whom were just out of college, young lawyers, literature majors, and art students—including a number of extraordinary women—defeated 40,000 professional soldiers. Not only did they defeat a major army, but they also disarmed America, including one Ed Sullivan, who actually interviewed Fidel. #354 Protein Consumption for Older Adults - What's New?

Protein Consumption for Older Adults - What's New? Fitness Friday Nutrition Series with Mike Glasgow Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm host Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode 354. Today's show is brought to you by Heaven's Maid. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, nationally known nutritionist, Mike Glasgow. Mike spent over five years working for an Area Agency on Aging in Wisconsin helping to oversee in the Older Americans Act senior congregate dining and Meals on Wheels programs and will join us in just a minute. We are talking about fitness, health, and nutrition today, and specifically about a protein-rich diet, which is important to health. According to the National Institutes of Health, up to one-third of older adults don't eat an adequate amount of protein due to reduced appetite, dental issues, impaired taste, swallowing problems and limited financial resources. Combined with a tendency to become more sedentary, this puts them at risk of deteriorating muscles, compromised mobility, slower recovery from bouts of illness and the loss of independence. Of course, my thanks to Heaven's Maid at https://heavensmaid.com for sponsoring the show, and to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. #353 Combating Nuclear Terror and Climate Change - Interview with Daniel Poneman

Combating Nuclear Terror and Climate Change - Interview with Daniel Poneman Inside Science & Technology Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Series, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #353. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science & Technology series, we are joined today by author, policymaker, scholar and businessman, Dan Poneman. Dan Poneman will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates, May 22, 2019, and his presentation is entitled, Double Jeopardy: Combating Nuclear Terror and Climate Change Humanity faces two challenges in which nuclear power plays a pivotal role: the spread of nuclear weapons and mitigating climate change. Both have human origins, and both are linked to the use of nuclear energy. Nuclear energy is the most prodigious source of carbon-free electricity now available and could prove pivotal to addressing global climate change and air pollution concerns. Yet inherent in the use of atomic power is the risk that the technology and materials can be mishandled, resulting in tragic disasters, or diverted to terrorists or hostile nations and used to make nuclear weapons. The key question is whether we can use nuclear energy to reduce the threat of climate change without increasing the risk of nuclear accident or attack. Thanks to Dan Poneman, who will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates, May 22, 2019, and his presentation is entitled, Double Jeopardy: Combating Nuclear Terror and Climate Change. at the Ripley Center in Washington, DC.
