#511 America and Iran: From Allies to Adversaries - Dr. John Ghazvinian

America and Iran: From Allies to Adversaries - Dr. John Ghazvinian The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #511. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Streaming series, our guest today is Dr. John Ghazvinian, and the title of Dr. Ghazvinian's upcoming presentation at the Smithsonian Associates is America and Iran: From Allies to Adversaries. Iran and America's fraught relationship seems to be always in and out of the news. In January 2020, just a year ago, after the drone strike assassination of Qasem Soleimani, headlines declared the two nations on the brink of war. More recently, it was revealed that Iran may be planning, alongside Russia and China, to interfere in the presidential election this November. Historian John Ghazvinian draws on his new book, America and Iran: A History, 1720 to the Present—for which he had access to Iranian government archives rarely available to Western scholars—to examine a complex relationship that reaches back to the Persian Empire and architects of American independence. Long before the "Great Satan" and "Axis of Evil" speeches, before the 1979 hostage Crisis and Ayatollah Khomeini—the two nations were allies and looked to each other for friendship, inspiration, and opportunity. Ghazvinian covers what he terms the "four seasons" of U.S.–Iran relations: the spring of mutual fascination; the summer of early interactions; the autumn of close strategic ties; and the long, dark winter of mutual hatred. But, are we at war, or will we be with Iran? That, of course, is our guest today, Dr. John Ghazvinian, speaking to us directly from the Middle East Center at the University of Pennsylvania, where we've caught up with him today. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associate, Dr. John Ghazvinian. My thanks to Dr. John Ghazvinian, who will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates program via Zoom, January 28, and the title of Dr. Ghazvinian's upcoming presentation at the Smithsonian Associates is America and Iran: From Allies to Adversaries. Please check our website for more details. Thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show, and thanks to you our wonderful Not Old Better Show audience. YA Author, Mara Rutherford - Reading for Young & Old: Kingdom of Sea and Stone The Not Old Better Show, Author Interview Series Welcome to the Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #510. Today's show is brought to you by HelloFresh. As part of our author interview series, today we're speaking with Mara Rutherford, author of the new book the "Kingdom of Sea and Stone." We're fortunate that Mara Rutherford has agreed to read a passage from the book for us today, but let me tell you a bit about Mara. Mara is back with us, with her newest novel, and you'll recall previously that Mara and I are related. My dear cousin Nancy had triplets, and Mara is one of three, who I've gotten to know well, and you'll know her a bit after our conversation today, but trust me when I tell you, this is not nepotism, but a great sequel and duology, from a book series, from a very hardworking author. Additionally, as I've mentioned previously, the Kingdom of Sea and Stone is an ideal read for all ages, but particularly so for grandparents and grandchildren. Hence, no favoritism here, just a great story for all. We'll have links up for more information about Mara Rutherford, but briefly, Mara Rutherford began her writing career as a journalist but quickly discovered she far preferred fantasy to reality. As I say, Mara Rutherford is a triplet born on Leap Day, and Mara holds a Master's degree in Cultural Studies from the University of London. Mara has since lived all over the world along with her young family and Marine-turned-diplomat husband. Mara Rutherford's sequel YA fantasy to the CROWN OF CORAL AND PEARL, the sequel is titled the Kingdom of Sea and Stone is available for sale now, published by HarperCollins. #509 Sabrena Jo - New Fitness Options for 2021

Sabrena Jo - New Fitness Options for 2021 The Not Old Better Show, Fitness Friday Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show Fitness Friday edition, I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #509. Our show today is part of our Fitness Friday series, and it's another great one in our Fitness Friday programs. We'll be hearing from returning guest, Sabrena Jo. While many people gained weight during the lockdowns, others have used the change in routine to eat better and exercise more. On the Fitness Friday program, we talk with Sabrena Jo about exercise and fitness. But, with the new year, our new year's resolutions, after such a brutal 2020, it's good to look forward and think about what's to come. It's been somewhat of a running joke in a profoundly unfunny time: endless laments about the "quarantine 15" or "Covid 19," referring to the number of pounds gained during the lockdown. One of the many challenges of Covid was the abrupt change to day-to-day schedules. People began working from home, if they had worked at all, in many cases joined by their kids. Gyms, recreation centers, and parks closed, curbing exercise routines. Stress levels skyrocketed for many, with baking, eating, and drinking becoming major outlets and means of reward. Indeed, studies show a link between high-stress levels and overeating. I always love speaking with Sabrena Jo, American Council on Exercise (ACE) Director of Science and Research, because of her research orientation. Research, fact-based analysis, and outcomes orientation are critical to our Not Old Better Show audience. Today we'll be speaking about when the environment around you changes and your routine changes, too, you can use it as an opportunity to say, "I am going to treat myself better in these really rough times." We'll talk about a fitness mindset, why it's so important. It's always how you view things, how you position your situation, your sense of self-worth, and how you treat yourself. You know, together with conscious portion-control and eating better, combined with a simple conscientious fitness routine, it really feels like we'll be making permanent and positive changes in our lives. Stick with it, and please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via interview phone, ACE Fitness' Sabrena Jo. My thanks always to Sabrena Jo, ACE Director of Science and Research for joining us today. Please check out the ACE #acesciencesaturday, which we'll link to here, for more great tips, resources, and information. #508 Russell Gammon's Africa - Take A Virtual Walk on the Wild Side

Russell Gammon's Africa - Take A Virtual Walk on the Wild Side The Not Old Better Show, Inside Science Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #508. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Interview series, we are joined today by the scientist, wilderness guide, and wildlife photographer Russell Gammon. Russell Gammon has been helping to fulfill such dreams, planning and leading private and small group safaris to some of Africa's most iconic destinations for 30 years. Russell Gammon will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates program via Zoom, January 23, and the subject of his presentation is Russell Gammon's Africa: Take a Virtual Walk on the Wild Side. Please check our website for more details. Who hasn't dreamed of glancing across a dry African savannah or standing beneath a jungle canopy, hoping to get a fleeting glimpse of a wild creature we've only seen in a zoo? Today we'll discuss with Russell Gammon the virtual safari he'll take us on, through four of his favorite places on the continent. We'll stop first at Serengeti National Park to follow the greatest large-mammal migration as a megaherd of wildebeest and zebra chase the rains across endless grasslands. We will experience the unforgettable sight of the largest population of African elephants on Earth in Botswana's Okavango delta. We will be dazzled by the wild and unique inhabitants on the island of Madagascar, known as Africa's Galapagos. And, we'll visit Russell Gammon's favorite, the little-known Mana Pools in Zimbabwe. Nestled in the heart of the Lower Zambezi Valley, it is one of Africa's last true wilderness areas, where the Zambezi River meanders through a paradise that is home to large wildlife populations, including elephants, hippos, and crocodiles. After this unforgettable journey, just imagine what dreams you'll have. Russell Gammon's family first arrived in Africa in the early 1820s. He is a popular wilderness guide with more than 30 years' experience leading expeditions and safaris throughout Southern and East Africa. Russell is also a gifted storyteller and an authority on the life of explorer David Livingstone. He has participated in an expedition with the British Explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes that retraced the final portion of Livingstone's journey to the Victoria Falls and was featured in the National Geographic-PBS documentary The Lost Diary of Dr. Livingstone. For the past five years, Russell has been a Smithsonian Associate, lecturing annually at their headquarters in Washington, D.C., on a wide range of conservation-related topics. When not on safari, he lives in the small coastal town of Knysna on the southern tip of Africa, where we're are joining him today. Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! #507 Dr. Paul Halpern - Synchronicity: Pauli, Jung, and the Quantum Nature of Cause and Effect

Dr. Paul Halpern - Synchronicity: Pauli, Jung, and the Quantum Nature of Cause and Effect The Not Old Better Show, Inside Science Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #507. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science Interview series, we are joined today by the scientist, author, quantum physicist, Dr. Paul Halpern. Dr. Paul Halpern will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program via Zoom, January 11, 2021, and the title of his presentation is Synchronicity: Pauli, Jung, and the Quantum Nature of Cause and Effect. Physicists remember Wolfgang Pauli for his Nobel-Prize-winning theoretical discoveries, his acerbic wit, and his uncanny tendency to destroy lab equipment if he happened to be in its vicinity. Psychologists, on the other hand, note that he shared hundreds of his strange, symbolic dreams with his therapist, the renowned psychoanalyst Carl Jung, leading to profound discussions between them about the nature of connections in mind and matter. Their collaboration is a fascinating chapter in 20th-century thought. Together, Pauli and Jung explored a concept called synchronicity, an unusual phenomenon they thought could link events without causes. Paul Halpern, professor of physics at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, tells the little-known story of this unlikely friendship and shows how their insights continue to resonate in today's discourse about the nature of quantum reality. Halpern shows that in order to map out the complex connections in physics, we need to make sure we know how to separate the real from the illusory—and how even the greatest thinkers have conflated valid, testable scientific connections with human intuitions about the workings of the universe, isolated in space and dwarfed by the immensity of time. That, of course, that was our guest today, Dr. Paul Halpern reading from his new book, Synchronicity: The Epic Quest To Understand the Quantum Nature of Cause and Effect. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, via internet phone, Dr. Paul Halpern. My thanks to Dr. Paul Halpern will be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates program via Zoom, January 11, 2021, and the title of his presentation is Talk About Better™ The Not Old Better Show on Radio & Podcast! #506 Teasel Muir-Harmony - Operation Moonglow

Teasel Muir-Harmony - Operation Moonglow The Not Old Better Show, Inside Science Series... Welcome to The Not Old Better Show, I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #506. Today's show is brought to you by Talkspace. As part of our Inside Science Interview series, we are joined today by a scientist, author, explorer, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony. Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony is the curator of the Project Apollo collection at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and teaches at Georgetown University. Dr. Muir-Harmony is the author of Apollo to the Moon: A History in 50 Objects and a contributor to the television series Apollo's Moon Shot, and is our guest today… On July 20th, 1969, over half the world's population tuned in to witness Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon and listen to that amazing audio sequence that "the eagle has landed." We just listened, of course, as Neil Armstrong radios "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed." Mission control erupts in celebration as the tension breaks, and a controller tells the crew "You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue, we're breathing again." Despite the jubilance and other outward national appearances, the project was never just about advancing scientific progress. Rather, it was an attempt from the American government to prove the superiority of the western capitalist system over communism and to fight for influence in developing countries. With Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union at a high, President Kennedy argued that ramping up the space program would inspire global confidence in American excellence. From the 1960s-1970s, US politicians, including Pres. Richard Nixon worked to link global progress with space accomplishments using films, souvenirs, political ads, and other forms of propaganda. Featuring first-hand accounts by Apollo astronauts and interviews with NASA staff, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony's new book, Operation Moonglow paints a riveting picture of the intersection of spaceflight, geopolitics, and Nixon diplomacy during the Cold War. That of course is our guest today, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony, reading from her new book, "Operation Moonglow." Please join me in welcoming back to The Not Old Better Show, Dr. Teasel Muir-Harmony. #504 Physicist Sean Carroll on Understanding Quantum Worlds

Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #504. As part of our Smithsonian Associates Inside Science series, we have a wonderful show and a great guest in Dr. Sean Carroll. Celebrated 20th-century physicist Richard Feynman famously said, "I think I can safely say that nobody really understands quantum mechanics." Our guest today, Dr. Sean Carroll, an acclaimed theoretical physicist, is determined to reintroduce this vital science to a new generation. Dr. Sean Carroll will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates program via Zoom, Dec 15, and we'll offer more details, links, and resources in our show notes today. Dr. Sean Carroll believes that many of his fellow physicists need to acknowledge gaps in the understanding of quantum mechanics—which seems to have ossified somewhere in the 1930s. Drawing on his new, excellent book Something Deeply Hidden, Carroll attempts to demystify quantum mechanics. Today on the show, we'll discuss with Dr. Carroll that the best way we currently have to understand quantum phenomena is the Many Worlds Theory. You'll come to know this principal well from Dr. Carroll, but it states: Every time there is a quantum event, a world splits off with everything in it the same, except in that other world that quantum event didn't happen. Dr. Carroll tackles the major objections to this theory and discusses its far-reaching implications for how we think about ourselves, our place in reality, and how we should examine long-standing issues such as reconciling quantum mechanics with general relativity, Einstein's theory of spacetime and gravity. I'm a fan of Dr. Sean Carroll. I like his podcasts, Mindscape Podcast with Dr. Sean Carroll, so please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Smithsonian Associate, Dr. Sean Carroll. My thanks to Dr. Sean Carroll, who'll be appearing at the Smithsonian Associates Tuesday, December 15, 2020 - 6:45 p.m. ET, and the title of his presentation is Understanding Quantum Worlds.' Please check out our website for more details. My thanks, too, to the Smithsonian Associates team for all they do to support the show.
