#520 Russell Shorto - A Story of My Family and the Mob
Russell Shorto - A Story of My Family and the Mob The Not Old Better Show, Author Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang, and this is episode #520. Today's show is brought to you by Relief Factor. So many of The Not Old Better Show audience enjoy researching genealogy, family history, and ancestry. Our guest today, NYT best-selling author, Russell Shorto's new book 'Smalltime,' A Story of My Family and the Mob, explores much more. Admittedly, Russell Shorto also had unusually rich material to work with. "Smalltime: A Story of My Family and the Mob" is a painstakingly researched, thoroughly entertaining, multi-generational look at Russell Shorto's paternal grandfather's career as a mobster in Johnstown, PA. Speaking of the mob, 5 time Academy Award-winning filmmaker of The Godfather series. Francis Ford Coppola says of 'Smalltime,' "Great history mixed with lovely, lingering memories." Shorto was born in 1959, and his grandfather, also named Russell Shorto, lived until 1981. They knew each other, but "Smalltime" could easily never have happened. We talk about 'why,' the mob's way of doing business, and the personal growth that comes from researching your family's roots. Russell Shorto says to do family history work you must have the stomach for it! Russell Shorto is known for narrative history, nonfiction books including "The Island at the Center of the World," about the 17th-century North American Dutch colony New Netherlands, and "Revolution Song," about the American Revolution. Yet the fascinating life of his own namesake ancestor might have remained unwritten if not for a chance encounter several years ago with an older relative who prodded him to look into it. Check out our interview and please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, author Russell Shorto. Thank you to sponsor Relief Factor for sponsoring the show today. My special thanks to author Russell Shorto for his generous time today, and my thanks to you my dear Not Old Better Show audience for your company today, and I hope you'll join me next time. Today's episode is brought to you by the fine folks at Hello Fresh. Join me and writer, Beth Kobliner, as Beth presents her late parents, Shirley & Harold Kobliner's, new book So To Speak: 11,000 Expressions To Knock Your Socks Off. SHIRLEY AND HAROLD KOBLINER developed their own passion project over the last decade of their 65 years of marriage: gathering and talking about the expressions that make the language so vibrant. Both career educators, they spent more than a half-century nurturing and teaching children. Whether you're feeling Over the Moon, Under the Weather, In Over Your Head, or Have Ants In Your Pants, there's are well-known phrases and figures of speech to express how you feel, and often family-specific, generational, and geographic. #514 Liz Hamburg - Founder, Candoo Tech
Liz Hamburg - Founder, Candoo Tech The Not Old Better Show - Technology Interview Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show. I'm Paul Vogelzang and this is episode #514. As part of our Art Of Living interview series, our guest today is Liz Hamburg, President, and founder of Candoo Tech. I know from your emails and follow up with me that tech is a "can't live with it, can't live without it" sometimes issue. The Not Old Better Show audience is wired with more innovative technology now than ever before, and while "smart" devices give users new and exciting means to tackle age-old challenges, steep learning curves can make adopting new technology an intimidating feat for even the most adventurous older adult. Our guest today, Liz Hamburg witnessed this 'can't live with it, can't live without it' phenomenon personally when her own gadget-loving father left her a voice message on her cell phone about his challenges with "Alexia," [sic] Amazon's Personal Assistant when "Alexia" went out of town. Let's listen to that message, saved by Liz Hamburg. That of course is Liz Hamburg's father reporting on his tech challenge with Amazon's "Alexia," [sic]. I've had similar issues arise with my almost 91-year-old mom, living across the country from me. And, I will tell you that, fully transparently, I have signed my mom up for Candoo Tech (no compensation has been received for this interview, just my belief in what Liz is doing, how she and her team does it, and a great story). Liz Hamburg is a high energy, entrepreneurial executive who is passionate about making an impact in the world. She has over 20 years of experience starting up and growing innovative organizations both in the U.S. and international markets. Liz Hamburg is the founder and President of Candoo Tech, providing tech support and training specifically designed for older adults to help keep them independent, safe, and secure. Liz received an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, a BA from Brown University, and a certificate from the Executive Education program in Social Entrepreneurship at Stanford Business School. Liz and I discuss that unlike traditional tech support services that focus on fixing specific, user-identified problems, Candoo Tech takes a holistic approach to tech support, identifying the needs of a client, introducing tech-based solutions, educating about tech, and providing clients with ongoing support so seniors can develop proficiency with new devices and tools at their own pace. Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show via internet phone, Liz Hamburg. My thanks to Liz Hamburg, founder and President of Candoo Tech. C A N D O O tech. Com.
