Her research areas are in individual differences, personality, academic performance, and study choices.  In this episode, we talk about how personality traits and individual differences influence educational, occupational and life choices. First, we discuss current personality inventories, particularly the Big Five, and their scientific basis and validity. Then, we get into issues related to the gender equality paradox, and how the differences between men and women in personality and educational and career choices exacerbate in countries that are more gender equal. We talk about findings in personality differences across academic majors, and also about the personality traits that are the most stable across lifespan, but also the ones that change a bit. -- Follow Dr. Vedel’s work: Faculty page: https://bit.ly/2JaboHR Researchgate page: https://bit.ly/2XycmCj Relevant articles: Big Five personality group differences across academic majors: A systematic review: https://bit.ly/2VJcTmQ Personality and Academic Performance: https://bit.ly/2FrqLKT Personality, academic majors and performance: Revealing complex patterns: https://bit.ly/2ZTyRTo The Big Five and tertiary academic performance: A systematic review and meta-analysis: https://bit.ly/2LgZHSn -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, MIGUEL ESTRADA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JIM FRANK, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORD, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, AND HERBERT GINTIS! She is trained in engineering, epidemiology and anthropology and studies human behavior from an evolutionary perspective. She’s also the author of the book Don’t Look, Don’t Touch, Don’t Eat: The Science Behind Revulsion.  In this episode, we talk about the emotion of disgust, and how it might have evolved. How it manifests in us and also other animals, in the form of avoidance behavior. Also, how disgust eventually leads us to avoid people that don’t belong to our social group, and how it might be behind some moral norms related to purity and pollution. Finally, we get to talk about how we can apply this knowledge to acquire better hygiene habits, and the influence of the environment settings. He and his colleagues worldwide have developed methods to describe risk perceptions and measure their impacts on individuals, industry, and society. He publishes extensively and serves as a consultant to industry and government. Dr. Slovic is a past President of the Society for Risk Analysis. He’s the recipient of several awards, and he was also elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2015 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2016. In this episode, we discuss decision-making processes in humans, as well as some important biases and heuristics that affect the ways we think. And we also apply this knowledge to how people deal with issues like climate change, medical and environmental problems (like vaccines and OGMs), genocide, nuclear power, and nuclear weapons. We go through a lot of the basics, talking about how biases and heuristics work, slow and fast thinking, and bounded relationality. We then use that to discuss risk perception. Finally, we talk about teaching people about how their minds work, and also the universality (or lack thereof) of these cognitive mechanisms.  -- Follow Dr. Slovic’s work: The Arithmetic of Compassion: https://bit.ly/2UWKNVV Decision Research: https://bit.ly/2ZG8Yqm Faculty page: https://bit.ly/2Dxh0rQ Researchgate profile: https://bit.ly/2XP7lFF Books on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2L0jUMg -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, MIGUEL ESTRADA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JIM FRANK, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORD, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, AND HERBERT GINTIS! He’s also a researcher at the Center for Research in Biodiversity and Genetic Resources at he University of Porto (CIBIO). Dr. Gama Mota is very interested in science communication, having been a former Director of the National Museum of Science and Technique, and the Museum of Science of the University of Coimbra (2006-2015), and also an organizer of initiatives and science communication exhibitions, as well as citizen science projects. His areas of interest and research include: animal behavior, behavioral ecology, evolutionary biology, and evolutionary anthropology. In this episode, our primary focus is on sexual selection. We start off by talking about how Darwin conceived of sexual selection, the reactions he got to that theory, and then some of the major developments in the 20th century that led to a full-fledged sexual selection theory, that now is at the basis of the study of any aspects of animal behavior. The conversation eventually goes off to group selection and multilevel selection approaches, and we talk about cultural evolution, gene-culture coevolution, and basically the interplay between biology and culture. -- Follow Dr. Gama Mota’s work: Faculty page: https://bit.ly/2URR8hf Researchgate page: https://bit.ly/2XVoJrG Central article for the discussion: Darwin’s sexual selection theory: a forgotten idea: https://bit.ly/2FlQ1Qm -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, MIGUEL ESTRADA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JIM FRANK, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORD, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, AND HERBERT GINTIS!
