When Profits Create Problems: What can we learn from Boeing?

Episode #285 // “If you make decisions in isolation, you're likely to miss the implications of those decisions on the whole ecosystem, and this is often where the cracks begin to appear.”Like many of you, I’ve done quite a bit of flying over the course of my adult life. I’m not a nervous flyer at all, but I’m always interested to see what’s happening in the world of commercial aviation. This bumper episode is a mini case study on Boeing, which has been in the news again recently – for all the wrong reasons. Another mid-air incident in January (which, fortunately, didn’t result in any serious injuries) has thrust the aircraft manufacturer back into the spotlight. Some of the contributing factors can be traced back to decisions that were made decades ago. There are some important lessons in this for everyone, regardless of the industry or country you’re working in.In this episode, I explore some important questions:Do Boeing’s problems stem purely from corporate greed? If not, what other forces are at work?Does a perfectionistic culture deliver the best results? How do you improve a company’s commercial performance, without sacrificing safety and reliability? What components of your value chain should you seek to outsource? Is it possible to effectively transfer risk to a supplier? You won’t have to deal with issues that are this public or dramatic very often, but if you can learn from the Boeing experience, it may prevent you from stepping on some of the same landmines.————————Source Material: Wall Street Journal article:"This has been going on for years". Giving Your Boss Feedback: How honest should you be?

Episode #284 // “There are very few bosses who will say “no” when asked if they’d like feedback. But even though they might say “yes”, you have to read the play – do they really want to hear it?”I spend a lot of time and energy helping leaders to build their capability in giving feedback to their people: how to engage them in difficult conversations; how to review their performance; how to know when it’s time to say goodbye to someone who isn’t performing.Let’s face it, if you want to be even mildly competent as a leader, this is a core skill. It has a technical element (of course) but, even more important are the psychological and emotional elements. In this episode, I flip the script to look at how to give feedback to the people above you. How can you give feedback to your boss, in a way that is respectful and direct? But more importantly, in a way that gives you a high chance of success — that is, your boss actually listens to you! I cover how to tell if your boss is receptive to feedback and, if so, how you earn the right to provide it. I explore the role of the trusted advisor. And I give you a practical, seven-step process for delivering feedback to your boss that you can download for free by clicking here.————————FREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability? Moment #53 // The factors behind the increasing levels of work stress that people are experiencing are many and varied – it’s a complex issue. What is pretty clear, though, is that more and more leaders are reporting that they are burnt out. But, if you apply a couple of relatively simple and practical remedies, you will be able to protect yourself from burnout. SImple? Yes! Practical? Definitely! But easy? Absolutely not! It’s not easy because you have to learn to push back, and set some clear boundaries. And you can’t do that unless you have a deep understanding of how your team can maximize the value it delivers. Once you can answer that question, you have to learn how to say “no” to everything else. You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.61: Learning to Say "No".————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.  Hosted on Acast. Celebrating 5 Million Downloads: Unpacking our podcast’s 5 success principles

Episode #282 // “A lot of the more senior leaders reject No Bullsh!t Leadership, because the higher up they go, the more they have to lose – they have to protect their position, their image, and their identity.”Our first episode of No Bullsh!t Leadership was produced in August 2018. This week, we achieved a major milestone - 5 million downloads of the podcast. To be perfectly honest, Em and I are pretty ordinary when it comes to celebrating success… and I often cringe at the thinly-veiled, self-congratulatory posts that seem to dominate LinkedIn and some of the other social media platforms. But I think it’s important to mark this milestone by standing back, and reflecting on what this really means, in the context of our purpose: to improve the quality of leaders, globally! So, instead of just pumping up our own tyres, in this episode Em and I have distilled a number of success principles that we learnt on our path to 5 million. We want this behind-the-scenes look to inspire you in your own leadership journey – it’s amazing what you can achieve with a blank sheet of paper and some ridiculously bold aspirations! To learn more about our Business Accelerator Mastermind (mentioned in the episode), click here.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.  Hosted on Acast. Moment #52: Building Professional Credibility

Moment #52: Building Professional Credibility // Whatever you try to achieve as a leader relies, at least to some extent, on your credibility. If you have strong personal credibility, it makes everything you do inordinately easier. Credibility galvanizes your team… it instills confidence in the people above you… and it ultimately becomes an integral part of your leadership brand. Without it, every yard you manage to move forward feels… hard. Credibility is the hallmark of all great leaders. It's the type of credibility that’s founded in their competence, their values, their leadership approach and, ultimately, their results. And everyone around them notices—you can feel the difference! You can take a deeper dive into these insights by listening to Ep.243: Credibility: The Hallmark of Great Leaders.————————FREE QUIZ: I’ve developed a 3-question quiz that’ll give you a free personalized podcast playlist tailored to where you are right now in your leadership career!Click here to take the 30-second quiz now to get your on-the-go playlist————————You can connect with me at:Website: https://www.yourceomentor.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/yourceomentorInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/yourceomentorLinkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/martin-moore-075b001/Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@YourCEOMentor————————Our mission here at Your CEO Mentor is to improve the quality of leaders, globally.  Hosted on Acast. Building Team Morale: Confident, Secure, and Enabled to Perform

Episode #281 // “If you focus on trying to make your people happy instead of providing the opportunity for them to develop their self-esteem, you're missing the point.”Team morale is built through proactive commitment and focus. It doesn’t just happen. One of the great misconceptions of leadership is that, if you make people happy, they will perform better and team morale will be high. Although this is possible in theory, it is highly unlikely to happen in practice. One of our listeners once made a comment about what it takes to build morale, in a military context: “Soldiers with high morale aren’t ‘happy’: they’re confident, secure, and enabled to perform. They’re not well-fed, rested, and kept out of harm’s way.”Building morale requires strong leadership. The object of the exercise is to give your people the opportunity to experience long-term satisfaction and fulfillment, which is a very different proposition from the short-term, sugar-hit happiness that most leaders focus on.Source Material: Marty’s TEDx video:The Surprising Power of Constructive ConflictNo Bullsh!t Leadership episode resources:Downloadable - the “DO”s and “DON’T”s of Team MoraleFREE 5 DAY LEADERSHIP CHALLENGE: Want to boost your leadership capability?
