Week One in Takeoverland
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with club correspondent Chris Waugh and our Senior Writer George Caulkin.
We're one week into new ownership and as the dust begins to settle, everyone has been surprised to see Steve Bruce is still Newcastle manager. Will he make it to the Spurs match? If he does, it'll be his 1,000th game in club management.
The Athletic ran an NUFC fan survey this week, so we chew on the results of that, and we think about how Sunday's atmosphere will be for fans, players, and television viewers around the world.

EMERGENCY PODCAST: The Ashley Era Ends
Taylor Payne hosts our podcast reaction to a whirlwind 48 hours for Newcastle United with The Athletic's Chris Waugh and George Caulkin.
Mike Ashley's ownership of the club came to an abrupt end, seemingly out of the blue, and we're still processing the news. The sense of relief is strong but some fans will feel conflicted by money coming into the club from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.
The consortium fronted by Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad Ghodoussi must now help the team avoid relegation from the Premier League before their ambitious plans can begin.

Fighting Amongst Ourselves
The Athletic's Newcastle United correspondent, Chris Waugh, was ringside for the club's latest courtroom melodrama, and he tries to report the details through persistent heckling from host Taylor Payne and Senior Writer, George Caulkin.
George attended the Wolverhampton match in Chris's absence and, despite good numbers in the away end, the atmosphere was flat. That was, of course, largely because of the shambolic showing on the pitch.
Perhaps a nice bit of needle with some opposition fans is what we need to liven things up. George has been writing about enmity in football this week and we think about what it will be like to hate people from other clubs again.

Statistical Update: Puttin' it in the Net
Taylor Payne is joined by The Athletic's Newcastle reporters Chris Waugh and George Caulkin to reflect on the trip to Watford, one that really should have yielded three points.
First-half dominance was squandered and a golden chance late on for Jacob Murphy nearly broke John Anderson. George channels Shakespeare, Sean Connery, and Ozzie Ardiles in a statistical report on the club's attempts to be more progressive.
We also hear about Alan Shearer's latest interview, with former Newcastle and Wimbledon striker Paul Robinson, and consider the difficulties facing young players coming through at the club.

Friday Night Frights: Basketball beats Football
Taylor Payne presides over a dissection of Newcastle's Friday night match with Leeds. Providing eye witness reporting and in-depth analysis are The Athletic's NUFC correspondent Chris Waugh and Senior Writer George Caulkin.
The Sky Sports production from St James's Park got the seal of approval from many fans and George, watching from his sickbed, agreed that it was a refreshing change of direction from a national broadcaster. The game itself was a chaotic mess, but that's more enjoyable than a dour mess, and the mayhem may have taken the pressure off our embattled manager.
We also ponder the bittersweet story of Andy Carroll. Released by the club after a second spell which saw him used infrequently, he spoke to Alan Shearer for The Athletic this week.

Powderkeg Diplomacy: Beware Giant Squibs
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with club correspondent Chris Waugh and the UK's Senior Football Writer George Caulkin.
Another visit to Old Trafford, another defeat, but did the team actually play OK? And even if they did, is that enough? Callum Wilson will now miss crucial games over the next few weeks, and points are desperately needed.
After the game, manager Steve Bruce fired a shot across the boughs of the local newspaper. We consider what might have prompted this outburst, and why the press is often an easy target.

A Statement of No Intent & Santi's Dream Begins
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with regular panellists Chris Waugh and George Caulkin.
Following criticism of the club's transfer window, an unusual statement was published via official channels. We pick out the main points and consider the motivations behind it.
One of only two players signed was Mexican teenager Santiago Munoz. We get the inside track from the journalist who was closest to the story, The Athletic's Felipe Cardenas.

Bruce Under Fire: Hung Out to Dry?
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to podcast from The Athletic with expert insight and forthright opinions from club correspondent Chris Waugh and our Senior Writer, George Caulkin.
It was the transfer deadline day we all feared. After the happy surprise that was the permanent signing of Joe Willock, noises from the club suggested that was it for incoming transfers. Despite ourselves, we hoped in vain for a loan or two, and it seemed the team boss was similarly let down.
For the first time in Steve Bruce's reign as Newcastle manager, the crowd at St James's Park sung for his sacking, and he is clearly feeling the pressure. Can he turn it round with such a threadbare squad? Only time will tell.

Heartbreak and Hope: Michael Chaplin Saves the Pod
Taylor Payne hosts your go-to Newcastle United podcast from The Athletic with Senior Football Writer George Caulkin providing expert insight.
We're now two games into the new Premier League season and Steve Bruce's team have yet to win a point. They've conceded six goals so far, scoring just twice, and it's difficult to ignore the memories of last season's horrendous run.
Fortunately, playwright and author Michael Chaplin has written a beautiful and timely memoir of his time in the stands at St James's Park. He stops by the pod to lighten our spirits with memories of some great players past and, in doing so, sparks a little hope for the future.
