#129 – Freedom In Christ

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley discuss Union with Christ, Trinitarianism, and Romans 8:1-18Questions Covered in This Episode:What is the “therefore” there for?“In Christ Jesus”How am I declared righteous? How do we reconcile the way that Spirit of Christ and Spirit in Christ are used? (V. 9)How do we understand the Spirit of Christ also being the Spirit of the Father? How is what Paul is saying here different from gnosticism? (V. 5-8, 12-18)Is the doctrine of Union with Christ that we are in Christ or that He is in us? (V. 9-10)Discuss the doctrine of adoption.Helpful Definitions:Existentially: In our lived experience of the world.Union with Christ: God invites us to live in His home, and His home is Jesus. That is how we make our home with God, we enter into home with God in Jesus. The Spirit of God is the invitation to come into the home, the home is the Son of God Jesus Christ, and it is full of all the good things the Father has for His family and His children.Divine Adoption: Playing out relationally of the concept of Union with Christ. You have a child relationship to the Father by virtue of the ontological relationship the Son has with the Father. What He possesses by right He gives to us by grace. What He has by nature He gives to us by adoption. That is the saving benefit of Union with Christ, everything that the Son has by nature and by right, He gives over to us in grace.Spirit of Christ: The Holy SpiritResources Mentioned in This Episode:Romans 8:1-18, Ephesians 1:4, Jeremiah 31:33, Ephesian 2:6, Galatians 3:3“Union with Christ With Kyle Worley” Journeywomen PodcastAmazon affiliate links are used where appropriate. Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley are joined by author, Bible teacher, conference, and retreat speaker Courtney Doctor. Together they discuss Romans 6:1-14 and union with Christ.Questions Covered in This Episode:Paul’s use of rhetorical questions to advance his argument: “What shall we say then?” Why would Paul ask and answer this question at this point?Should we understand this to mean that if you are a Christian you can’t sin and if you sin you couldn’t possibly be a Christian? What does it mean to be “baptized into Christ Jesus?”What is the doctrine of union with Christ? How is this tied to the actual historical events of Christ? How do we consider ourselves “dead to sin?”Helpful Definitions:Union with Christ: When we are in Christ, all that he has done, all that he has accomplished; those become ours too. #124 – Justified by Faith

Jen Wilkin, JT English, and Kyle Worley look at Romans 5:1-11 and discuss justification by faith. Questions Covered in This Episode:What is justification? What does it mean to be justified “by faith?”Why is peace with God a benefit to justification? What does it mean to “rejoice in hope of the glory of God?”Rejoicing in our sufferings (V. 3-5)?Has there been a season of life that you walked through suffering and what did it produce in you?Is there a more beautiful verse than Romans 5:6?What is Paul trying to do in V. 7-11?What is the kind of person Christ died for?Discuss the phrase “shall we be saved.” Am I saved or will I be saved?Helpful Definitions:Justification: To have God’s righteousness accounted to us. Because of what Jesus has done on the cross our sin was accounted to him and His righteousness is accounted to us.Imputation: Jesus’s righteousness has been imputed (or given, or granted) to us through our faith in His Lordship.Faith: Being able to say and confess Jesus Christ is Lord. Includes giving your whole self away to Jesus as King. The instrument of our salvation. Faith receives everything from the work of Christ and contributes nothing to it. A gift that God gives so that we can receive more of God’s gifts, namely, the grace of salvation. Faith does not actualize something, it is a belief in something that has already been actualized. Our agreement, our affections, and our allegiance. When we are justified by the blood of Christ, we are saved from sin’s penalty. As we are being sanctified, we are being saved from sin’s power. When we are glorified, we are finally and fully saved from sin's presence.Resources Mentioned in This Episode:Romans 5:1-11, Romans 1:16-17, Romans 3:11Knowing Faith Romans EpisodesStoryline Church Romans Sermon SeriesMosaic Church Romans Sermon SeriesThe Village Church Institute Romans Bible StudyKnowing Faith Episode #117 – The Righteous Shall Live By FaithAmazon affiliate links are used where appropriate.
